you can either make it authentic by making a custom platform movement, then having his x go back a few as well as jumping when you press the backflip button
or
you can just make a backflip animation

It's possible when the player is doing a backflip on even ground, but say if the player wanted to backflip onto a higher platform, the backflip animation would only be half finished and it would look stupid when he is upside-down one minute and then stood up again on the ground 0.05 second later.

LoL. Nice open generic question. Make a backflip animation, then use jumping code and move the x back a few like the Scorpian E guys said.

Put in detectors (probabley 2 or 4) to check if the player lands the flip. If he doesn't then let his face smack into the wall.

I would like to HELP you, but I CAN'T EVEN DO A BACKFLIP MYSELF!
I tried to, but I broke my legs! My docter said I AM TOO FAT TO DO A BACKFLIP, HAR HAR HAR!
