What are engines exactly and what are they used for? I tried to make sense by downloading a couple of them but it did not work.

Engines are the code that run a game, minus the game itself. For example, several very different platformers could use the same engine.

And, by contrast, two very-exactly-the-fucking-same platformers can use the same engine, especially when small blue balls are involved.

Ok, a very short explanation. An engine is a game without using the movement options. You have to MAKE your own movement by putting together events creating your own movement. It is called a custom engine or movement. The more time u spend on programming ur games the more you can do with them.

So, you've taken the risk of asking what an engine is, eh? Congrats.
Anyway, keep looking at the engines you've downloaded, and go through the code over and over. It will burn into your mind.

An engine can be used to:

1)Move the main character of your game. (If you use the default platform engine, the character might get stuck in platforms, allow the player to climb up the walls, and so on and so forth. Overall, the default engine really sucks.)

2)You can give the game baddies have there own AI. This way, you won't have to resort to path movements.

You can make Special Effects and other stuff, too. Zeb is a good example (even if your an MMF user).
Or you can just browse around in the Tutorial section. Good luck!
