GOTW: 2002/12/15
News posted 15th December, 2002 by ShadowCaster
OK, I know it's been almost 2 weeks since I was supposed to do the GOTW update, but I've been trying to figure out the log files without any help from Rikus. First of all, everything needs to be done manually, there's no script that will create a new poll, secondly there seems to be a problem with the log file, saying that some people voted for game 8, which doesnt exist. Strange, eh? Thirdly I've been waiting for Rikus to email me the GOTW graphic so I can update it for the new GOTW, but I havent received that yet either.

NEVERTHELESS! The winner of the GOTW for this week around isn't actually a game, but an example engine. The prospect of having 3D capabilities in MMF seems to outweigh everything else here, with Daniel's creation: FPS 3D Engine For MMF! Congratulations, 5 extra DC points goes to your rating.

This week...?
DotWorld 1.0, Samuryan (Better Demo), Mitosis, Meteorz, GvsE (original), HAWKSTAR, Zombies Now demo, Blade of Chris (Beat'em Up), Striking past, Pling Pong 2.2, Fish Fighters, OSD 2 (Abandonware), Bob, Jim Bob and the Orange Sun :), Wacky Welder BETA, Toon Town Detective, Happy Dude Goes Hand Held, The Engineer 2, Mari007 (Better Download), Scenix Demo, Shooting style(anti stress), Lander 3000, Bob the slug (vertion0.01)original, Butzo Bot Blaster, ARC2 (arcade racing 2)

*PHEW* ! And they were just the 5% of games with screenshots ;)

The Engineer 2 as a GOTW? No way, the game isn't even his.

I wouldn't wanna be up in this GOTW!

Posted by ShadowCaster 15th December, 2002

Oka: Hmm, I didnt realise that. I've had to remove all of Lucas' submissions in the past because they were others work. The only thing I checked before adding games to that list was if they had screenshots. I've removed the game, however I cant remove it from the GOTW poll because it'll bugger up the numbers of the current votes.

This FPS engine got a GOTW? That's just stupid! It's a mode7 object with a height map! Anyone can do that, sorry...

Posted by ShadowCaster 15th December, 2002

Dont blame me, Rikus did the GOTW last time ;)

One more thing, I've created a small program to read through the list of votes and remove duplicates, so if something is far infront of all the others, and a different game wins at the end of the day, you know why. Rikus used to update it by hand (which sucked since there are a couple of hundred votes each week) and smegged if I'm going to do that manually ;)

I agree with Tigerworks...

how come 'bob, jim bob' is not in the running for gotw, when its achevied around 230downloads?

Posted by Joe.H 15th December, 2002

well... at least theres a new poll.

Posted by CYS 15th December, 2002

demo shouldn't be added

Posted by Gongashplei 15th December, 2002

I thought demos and examples didnt qualify for gotw. That 1st person thing is an example isnt it? Theres a few demos in the running for this week too...

How come there were so many games nominated this week? I thought that the gotw award had a maximum of 7-8 nominations a week

I can do you GOTW graphics if you want Shadow, but they'll be in a different font. CsaR: these GOTW candidates were elegible for the last couple of weeks

Posted by AsparagusTrevor 15th December, 2002

I think demos should be eligable to be entered in the GOTW. Then we're letting the users of DC decide whether the demos actually deserve to win or not. The choice should be there, and I'm glad it's been brought back.

why are there so many? surely this removes the whole point of gotw. there are only 7 or 8 so that people can download them all and vote on that. no one can be expected to download all these games.

Posted by Tigerworks 15th December, 2002

Lol, btw - about the new poll: 'I'd prefer TGF 2' You do realise MMF is TGF 2?

Posted by Shen 15th December, 2002

I agree Besides most people will vote for the more recent games, having forgotten what the earlier games were like...

Posted by AsparagusTrevor 16th December, 2002

what the hell's happened to all the GOTW votes? They've all been reset. that's not right, Zombies Now and Scenix were kicking ass, now it's got no votes? What the hell's going on?

Posted by AsparagusTrevor 16th December, 2002

GOTW server reset? That truly sucks arse.

Posted by Muz 16th December, 2002

Hmm...why not let the people choose for what should be on the GOTW poll? Say...any game out there needs at least 5 nominations(from different people, of course) to be on the poll. And nominations could be made on the downloads page, say...a button somewhere. Or if that's too tough...let's just make it so that any game with a review would be up there. I mean...if nobody reviews it...then most likely, nobody's gonna randomly vote for it. I noticed that ppl tend to randomly vote for whatever games they see...just to see how the poll's going...or something like that.

i agree muz.

Posted by ShadowCaster 16th December, 2002

If I'd only selected a couple, people would have complained if their game didnt appear. Seriously, I've organised enough things to realise that you can never make everyone happy.

Posted by Muz 17th December, 2002

Hmm...better yet, let's just put every new download in the GOTW poll. Demos, examples, full games...whatever come in...automatically gets nominated for the poll. At least nobody will be complaining about what's in there and what's not :P.

Posted by AsparagusTrevor 18th December, 2002

Isn't it games that have screenshots that get entered? That's fair enough, but you'd think it'd encourrage more people to include screenshots with their downloads.
