Seeing as I was pressured by the impending deadline and the plague of bugs that revealed themselves to me after the fact, I didn't get to put everything I wanted to in the submitted game. What happens now then is that I continue to work on it. That means developing the levels, adding things to them, and stuff like that. I like the McDoss battle music, so that's what I did first, added things to the battle. Now he has more than one attack. It also reveals how you'd go about beating him in the submitted version.
The original Tops 2 did support fullscreen but it was a bizarre TGF option that only worked with 256 colour mode with the 16 bit build and with a screen size of 320x200. Also It only worked on my computers with windows 98 installed.
I think Tops 3 just used that ugly stretch to fill screen thing that is extremely slow.
Oh btw, something I noticed when making my current Tops the pig game. Punches are better when they are FAST. You might want to speed up the animation and make him throw his gloves as soon as fire is pressed instead of at the end of the animation. It will help players shoot faster.
On another note, what idiot came up with those names? McDoss and Tops? Comment edited by AndyUK on 7/15/2009
This is really good to hear. I know Piney's working on a full version of New Piney (which is bloody brilliant btw), I was gonna ask if you were continuing work on this so I guess I have my answer. Good luck with it. I haven't tried the competition version but I'll definitely be after the completely finished game.
Wanted to try the fullscreen version, only to find out I couldn't. Don't know if I'm the only one with this problem but the game freezes when loading fonts (textblitter ftw). Quite annoying but maybe my machine is crazy.
It works now. Before I didn't actually move the fonts to the fonts folder, yet the game ran fine. Therefore I thought it installed the fonts automatically. Must say I don't care much for having to install fonts to make a game run, but hooray now I'm able to play it again...
The Full-Screen version doesn't install the fonts, even when I move them to the fonts folder in Windows. The game just freezes.
And its not full-screen! I have Windows Vista and thus, although the screen is bigger, there's a huge white border present. Why not "resize to fill window"?
Oh, also, the installation process works through using the File object to check for fonts and if they don't exist the Binary object extracts them from the application and installs them. It works as long as it isn't installing to the Fonts folder, so I just included the fonts as well.
I fixed fullscreen. Didn't realize I had to check both options.
Problem though. I'm at the final boss, McDoss, but for some reason, as soon as the introduction finishes, Tops throws himself to the right and nearly always lands in the spikes without me doing anything. Im guessing that he's meant to hit McDoss first and then get thrown back onto land? Then, if I do rarely regain control, McDoss sometimes leaves the play area.
Also, sometimes the scrolling flickers between McDoss and Tops. I had to stop playing the game after getting so far because I wasn't getting anywhere Comment edited by Chris Street on 7/16/2009
I can't get that to happen, but yes, in an earlier build he was supposed to do that. It was part of an epic cutscene where McDoss is about to eat Chib and he comes in and saves the day, but it didn't work so I deactivated the group. I'm going to play through the actual application as opposed to the mfa to see if I can replicate that.
I swear the game didn't want me to pass level 2. Well I got past it eventually.
It's great how you kept the level design pretty much spot on but added the differing movement modes. Having to swap between them for various jumps works really well.
It's a bit buggy still. Comment edited by AndyUK on 7/16/2009
