HOT!
Posted 14th Oct 10, by HitmanN
I'll keep updating the previous devlog with the full list of stuff for next release.

Lava
New lava-based level theme. Lava maps have puddles of lava that pretty much instantly kill any unit touching it. Obviously, the lava is a nasty hazard you can push your opponents in... or get pushed yourself.

So far only one new map uses lava, but I will make at least another.

Menu options saved
Game settings are now saved in an ini file, and loaded upon entering main screen. Basically, your preferred game settings are retained, without having to adjust them again for every game.

QUESTION!
What do you people think of having special events/disasters happen during a game? What I basically had in mind is stuff falling from the sky. In lava maps it could be a fireball, and in normal maps it could be something like an airstrike, aircraft wreck, stray missile, artillery shot, or somesuch. These events would of course be optional, so what I'd like to know is
A) Would you ever use these in your games?
B) Should these be sudden, or with a warning couple of turns in advance?
C) Do you have any ideas for events like these?

A)Would you ever use these in your games?
Oh yes, all of the above that you mentioned.

B) Should these be sudden, or with a warning couple of turns in advance?
Depends on the theme or storyline. But otherwise, no. Just be sure and tell people beforehand that it CAN happen. Worms did it with the rising water level. Why not?
C) Do you have any ideas for events like these?
Pretty much only weather/day/night events. But having played something like dino-run and canabalt, anythings fair game.

A) Hell yeah i'd use them - tornados would be another good natural disaster, blowing the vehicles all over the place
B) Weather warnings could come as part of a vehicles special feature/weapon. If bought, these could warn of sudden weather disasters and the vehicles could prepare for such storms (digging in, for example)
C) Oh, the tornado idea, fork lightning, animal stampedes, floods, earthquakes (shakes and damages vehicles). Some vehicles would not be affected by some of these and affected by other events, eg. flying vehicles would really suffer with tornados but have no problem with land-based earthquakes

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll look into some of those. Right now I'm working on a weather effect, rain. Not sure yet if it has any actual gameplay effect, but possibly a minor gravity increase, with the rain pushing units downward. Rain could be a sign of a worse event coming, like thunderstorm or a hurricane.

I'm also interested in trying earthquakes and tornadoes/hurricanes. The disasters/events could actually come in two types. Global and local. A tornado would be local and hits a specific area only. A hurricane would be slightly weaker, but affects the entire map, thus being global. Not sure about floods, since there's not water yet to begin with.

The idea of a warning system is pretty neat, but in practice not very useful, since only one player needs to have it, and then the opponent can see it also. Unless the event happens right on the next turn from the warning, then it has a momentary advantage to the player who owns the warning system, to move units to safer locations. Unit-specific anti-disaster skills could be neat though.

That's some seriously heavy rain, that pushes units down

I'd have thought wind is an obvious one to have in any artillery type game - just affecting projectiles, and not actually blowing vehicles around).

I like the idea of earthquakes. I wouldn't have them damage vehicles, but just make it so they move stuff around a bit for a few seconds - so if vehicles are precariously perched (eg. at the top of a cliff), they might fall over the edge, and take damage that way. Plus screen-shake effects are always fun

Some kind of terrain-deforming event? Maybe over-hanging terrain blocks could fall down and crush vehicles.

An event that creates new gold reserves somewhere on the map, at random?

Vehicle reliability and/or random braeakdowns?

Seasonal effects? eg. In winter there might be snow.
Snow could slow movement. Ice could reduce friction. Snow could build up on top of other terrain blocks (ie. it would be a new kind of terrain block itself). There might be more wind in winter.
Blizzards might create a Fog of War situation (you can only see stuff near to your vehicles).

Rain might be trapped by impermeable terrain blocks, to form lakes (might be hard to program).

I don't know - just thinking out loud...

Some cool ideas there too. A general wind effect is indeed something common to artillery type games. Will need to look into that some more. The event of new gold reserves appearing is also pretty neat. Could also be an effect of a capturable. Every turn there's a chance that a rocky block turns into a gold-filled one, on the player's half of the map.

This game is starting to sound like worms.
