Project: Wyv and Keep: The Temple of The Lost Idol
Project Overview |
|
Our curious adventure stars the notorious treasure hunters Wyv and Keep, who've become weary of their mundane life of petty thievery, and now travel the globe looking for the lost treasures of legend to claim as their own. In their first adventure, the duo journeys to an ancient, forbidden jungle in search of a cursed tomb where, if the stories are true, a long-forgotten and priceless idol lays buried...
Gameplay is co-operative grid-based action/puzzle platforming, where navigating boxes onto switches in order to open the level gate is the ultimate goal, and a multitude of traps, enemies, and obstacles must be overcome in each stage. This requires teamwork between the two characters, who can be controlled separately in single player mode, switching back and forth, or simultaneously, for those players with cool friends.
We originally planned to set the game in a massive, trap-filled castle, with extensive online multiplayer, a built-in map editor, and more, but after considering releasing on cellphones as well, envisioned a smaller, prequel game that would be faster to make, allowing us to finish and release a polished product before embarking on the longer endeavour. This is the origin of The Lost Idol; a small taste of things to come, but still very much a solid game in its own right.
We're initially targeting Windows, Xbox, and Windows Phone 7, with plans to port to Mac, Android, and iPhone in the future. Hopefully we'll be able to put out a playable preview sooner rather than later, so we'll be sure to let you know when it's available, but for now getting some initial opinions would be great

Hey all! Another monthly update for Wyv and Keep: The Temple of The Lost Idol. Progress has been continuing steadily and we now have the main gameplay where we want it in preparation for a demo release within the next few weeks. The demo will showcase 5 unique levels for the game, including multiple traps to experiment with. At that point, a preorder system will be introduced for people interested in the full game, which will grant access to special features prior to the game's release, including the map-editor (shown in a screenshot below), and updates to the gameplay as they are released (new traps, new templates and the online multiplayer mode). We're really excited about all the upcoming features and the demo release itself. It should be fun to see the comments we get back in the first public preview. See you all soon!

Easy Mode!

We're going to add in an easy mode for WnK. We weren't willing to tone down the difficulty of later levels, but felt that it might be a bit tough for casual gamers, so we're going to add in an easy level of difficulty. All levels in Easy Mode are variations of Normal Mode levels, just with some of their puzzle elements removed. So they might have more boxes available, or a particularly nasty action element removed. This should not only allow an easier learning curve, but allow players to become familiar with the layouts of the levels they will find in Normal Mode, giving a better shot at beating their harder, bigger brothers.
We also feel this will have the added benefit of allowing 2 player co-op teams to finish the game without murdering one another. We have long suspected that the 2 player in WnK would be similar to the 2 player in say, BattleToads. There was no way any 2 players ever completed the original BattleToads. The Level 2 / Level 3 combo was enough to foil virtually every attempt. With an Easy Mode in play, it should allow people who are just wanting to have a good time with chums to play pretty far into the game without worrying about investing in too much neck wrangling.

Perhaps the most badly needed addition to Wyv and Keep has been, for some time, a proper soundtrack. No more. Our long and painful quest for a composer has ended, conveniently enough with a simple well-timed email in my inbox. And so I give you the first of many awesome-beyond-words tracks, Wyv and Keep's main theme!
Luke's been great to work with thusfar, and is already developing a great sound for the game on the whole, and making quick work of the soundtrack. And also, he can do sound effects! The time has come to do away with our crappy temporary sounds. So hallelujahs all around today.
