What are we doing? We've got 6 or 7 people in on this project. You would think that we could make a game that's 6-7x bigger than the average game, right? Haha, no. Like any klikker just starting out, we're too ambitious. We need to take a step back (or several) and think, what can we actually accomplish? I'd bet that this is the #1 reason why other projects of this sort have failed. The ones that haven't, from what I gather, have just been an odd mish-mash of games.

Let's be different and start small. Keep the concentrated effort on one game, but scale it down. It'll be easier to make something if there's less to make.

its exactly what we're doing. That's the point of the level editor, have the 6 or 7 of us worry about engine and story while the rest of the world makes the levels for us. We know what we can do so to lessen the workload we just set the foundations.

My thought would be to wait till we get a working engine to handle the first story level then set up a googlesites or blogger with the demo and encouragement to try out a level editor. Then, we offer a contest. The top whatever levels submitted lets say 12 or 15 will get to have their levels featured in the game and their name in the credits. In matter of fact, say that the #1 gets their picture in the credits. We offer fame as the prize.

That way, not just TDC is involved and we'll get even more diverse levels. Plus, we can fine-tune stuff like ability balancing and the cutscenes whilst the outside world does all the dirty work.

If you will put it on youtube, nerds will come.

Enough with the pipe dreams and think reality for a second: What can we actually do? We don't even have a movement engine yet, nor do we have any sort of content sufficiently planned. We don't have anything to show for the two weeks of planning. We don't have any word on when we'll have something to show. The only thing that we do have to show is discussion, disagreements, and pipe dreams.

I'm going to post a simple story idea in the other thread in a few minutes, keeping in line with this "keep it simple" idealogy.

oh come on if you want to make an ACTION RPG simple then the plot shouldn't be basic too. Those are the two things that make the rpg element- detailed programming (from stats to inventory etc) and an interweaving storyline, something to immerse the player in. The less you have of one, the more you need of the other.

and as for the "what have we done?" We've got multiple movement engines from which we can easily splice various sections of code to make whatever we need. We've got locked selections for what we want for genre, pace, etc. We've got a list of possible programming features. We've got it narrowed down to one of two storylines. All this from two weeks of brainstorming. Don't be too put out if we don't have the coding 100% done when just two weeks earlier we hadn't even decided on what genre the game was going to be. You may be used to doing this stuff faster alone but that's when you start with the story and features already planned out in your head. Chances are, most stuff will be settled within a week or so and that's when you'll start seeing your precious content.

lol ... you should write resumes for people dndfreak. You make it sound like we've accomplished something.

well we have, albeit not much. When this first started, we had nothing decided. Now, we have some things decided. That's called progress.
