The Daily Click ::. Downloads ::. Review Review: Unknown Game 2475
Someone must have it in for me. All the games released today have been difficult to review, but this one is the most difficult of the lot. Read on and you'll see why... The South Park influence in the game is very apparent in the drawing style, particularly of the main character. His animation isn't too good, though. The custom movement adds crouching to the standard repertoire, giving some slight Contra flavour to it. My initial reaction to the game was that it was a shocking, horrendous, ultra-violent mass murder simulator. By the time it came to stop playing and write the review, I was itching to get back for more and to see what secrets I could unlock beyond my meagre high score of 4200. That's the human race for you <¦-( The object of the game is to kill, slaughter, maim, etc. any and all enemies in sight. The enemies take the form of harmless-looking bunnies who appear through glowing portals into some unknown dimension (actually that's just me being verbose). You have an impressive array of eight weapons with which to dispose of them. These are also thrown out of the portals at you, and I'll give a summary of their effects here: 1 - Pistol. It's weak, but somehow strong enough to generate a massive amount of blood once you've killed an enemy. 2 - Uzi. Much faster than the pistol, but takes up more ammo, naturally. 3 - Flamethrower. This one causes the bunnies to run around in a panic when they catch fire. 4 - Dart gun. It tranquillises its target, but doesn't kill them. Useful if you're surrounded. 5 - Plasma cannon, or "Red Dwarf" as the author calls it. Shoots blue spheres. 6 - Grenade launcher. BOOM! 7 - Rocket launcher. See above, but in a straight line. 8 - "Screamer". Plays the "ring" sound from Sonic, and causes the bunnies' faces to melt and their heads to explode in an excessively gory performance. Getting a sufficiently high score unlocks an Apogee style cheat (hold down three buttons during the game to do something). This is a great way of keeping a player interested and encouraging them to beat their high score. Score can be earned by picking up money or alternatively by just shooting enemies as much as possible. Your health can't be replenished, and when you die it's Game Over, as you'd expect. The music didn't seem very suitable, I'd have preferred a Doom-like soundtrack myself. Still, some of it is heading in the right direction. I noticed that one of the MIDIs was also used in Butterfly 660, the first game that I reviewed (it's the one that plays during the "alien chase" scene near the end). Problems, then? Well, there are only two levels, and as good as the game is that's not really enough. Some extra modes would also be good, as this game has great potential - Time Attack, for example? I for one am easily offended, but once I got over my initial reaction I found what was a great "stress relief" minigame built on a solid engine. The only trouble is that it doesn't really take itself far enough, even though it's made a good start. Download it!
