What? Is it Retro Day today, and no one told me? First Pac-Man, then this. Although this certainly takes a different route from the former retro game.

I was surprised when I double clicked the icon to find that the word "GETHYPER" had appeared in the middle of the screen. This was in fact the application, and not my computer telling me to get up from the computer and go and get a life instead. The reason that it looked like just a word on the screen was that the application uses only black and white, and the total area of the game window is - wait for it - 64 by 64 pixels.

Well, that's a guess anyway. After sellotaping a pair of binoculars to the front of my face, I was able to actually play the thing, which resembles Galaxian - the version of Space Invaders where the enemies can move down the screen towards you. Predictably, once you've finished off a screenful (well, more like a postage stamp-full) of enemies you have to do it all over again, and repeat the formula until you die at the hands of the microscopic 1-pixel bullets dropped by the attacking black five by five blobs.

The game mechanics are well programmed, and it plays well enough if you can actually see it. I'm not wanting to seem cynical, though of course I am, but it seems to me that the author has just programmed a very unremarkable Space Invaders clone and used a very cheap gimmick to get it noticed (i.e. give permanent eye damage to as many users as possible). Even in my monitor's fixed 800x600 mode I found it a strain to see what was going on.

A special note to Quadralien if he's reading this - don't even attempt to play this game. With your ludicrously high monitor resolution, trying to play it will probably result in spending the next six months in laser eye surgery.
