I double-clicked the EXE fully expecting another mindless newbie game with stupid gameplay and even stupider presentation (is stupider a word?). But I didn't get what I expected. Ultra Space is actually one of the best beginner's game I've seen for a while.
The object of the game is extremely simple. Shoot the baddies and avoid the bullets, like a million other games I've seen and played. But originality is not the game's strong point, the addictive gameplay is.
First of all, you think it's going to be the same all the way through. A few enemy spaceships that don't shoot and are easy to dodge. But then some others appear soon into the game. The ones that shoot directly in front of them. Then some more appear who actualy shoot in your direction. Then some more appear who really annoy you by coming from the bottom when you can't see them. But that's part of the fun. The game gradually gets harder and harder until it's mayhem when you can't actually see most of the backdrop for enemies. You have 3 lives, and you lose one every time your health bar is empty. Simple enough, but it's done nicely. Another nice thing about the game is the fact that when you get further up the screen, you can shoot more bullets, up to 3 at a time. Maybe more but I didn't get that far.
The worst thing about this game is the graphics. They would probably look nice if they had transparency, but instead they have green or white boxes around them. But I think this is the only bad point of the game.
The title screen may not have been the best, but I'm sure that's because he is just started making games.
Oh I forgot to mention the sound. The music (made by me) actually fits the game, although I didn't make it for any particular use. The collisions and explosion sounds are the standard ones you'd get in a game like that, but there isn't freedom in terms of BANG BANG, WHOOSH, CRASH.
Overall, this is a simple, yet addictive game. Perfect from a beginner.
