The Daily Click ::. Downloads ::. Review Review: Captain of the Guard
Captain of the Guard. From the screen shots and the programmers mention of how much work has been put into this project I downloaded it with quite high expectations. First Impressions The introduction of the story is straight forward text describing the back story of the hero. It reads like an old medieval epic until you get to the phrase "Zeenie the Weenie". After that I never took the story line seriously. Then a cut scene telling of your first quest, basicly Zeenie the Weenie who is the new king orders you to go and find his underpants! No seriously! I know hardly Shakespeare is it. After all that’s out the way you move onto the actual game. Game play You choose from a world map your desired location. You can go see the king which basically replays your current mission cut scene, go to the blacksmith to upgrade your character or move to the location relevant to your current quest. A bit like the Final Fantasy world map in other words. The actual missions are played through Zelda like perspective through 2d birds eye view. The controls are fool proof but with only 1 attack move per weapon there really isn’t any tactical element to fighting. Its basically dodge and strike which becomes repetitive and boring after a while. Also its incredibly hard. You are killed very easily very early on in the game which makes it hard to build up your character to make him stronger. Also the enemy over laps you which means they cause even more damage. I found myself killing an enemy and wondering around to find a health potion just so I could take out the next guy which became frustrating. There is no really ground breaking A.I but that doesn’t really matter in a game like this, they see you and go after you until your dead which works ok and doesn’t take too much away from the game play. There is a menu which keeps track of your kills which is a welcome addition I guess although I never really cared either way of my kill count. Graphics & Presentation The graphics are ok but nothing great. They seem very flat and plain. All the trees are identical and there is nothing in between the open plains apart from a few barrel and flowers. One of the cool things about games like Zelda are walking into a city and exploring. The levels seem empty and lifeless. I never got past the fact that it was a click game. Although they are well drawn the whole thing feels simplistic. The characters have hardly any animation either. (e.g.) the main character moves like a cyborg and when he attacks the weapon just appears in front of him or when a bad guy throws something at you there is no throwing animation. Sound The sound in the game is good. Nothing really to out of place apart from the occasional voice of the programmer. Music The music in the game is good, probably the best thing about it. There is no theme that sticks in your head and will have you humming all day but non of them are annoying or out of place in the game. Last ability Once you have done the first level there really isn’t a whole lot more to see. The ground changes, the enemies change a bit and you still get killed a lot. I will be giving the game another go just to see if I can finish it, but it won’t stay on my hard drive much longer than that. Overall This is a extremely flawed game with more negative points than positive. I’ve seen these games done before using click products and seen them done better. Future Fantasy was a lot better than this and was made using Klick & Play over 8 years ago. There is no doubt that this game needs work. The concept is unoriginal the plot sounds like it was written by a 5 year old and the will to progress in the game is low. Having said that the sprites, graphics and music are all original and it is only the programmers second release which is better than some clickers 9th or 10th. This game will probably win GOTW but I had more fun playing 2elacsy for 10 seconds than I did with this for 30 minutes but hey! Everyone to their own.
