And to think I'm trying to achieve total silence with my PC when I could just get a massive 5.1 setup. Hey, at least I have this cool case and funky lights now.

my sound system is the best part of my PC, 4 speakers and sub, sounds hot. but it does make you realise that MOST games have pretty shit music/sound effects/voice acting. the only time i crank my sound is listening to REAL music.

I can't really afford a 5.1 setup for my PC even though I got the soundcard for it, but I do have my PC hooked up to my stereo at all times, and it sounds awesome.

Considering the kind of music I listen to I'm sure everyone's very glad it listen to it with laptop speakers.
I used to have some bigger ones, but they 'sploded.

Yeah I've had that problem too.

As much as Sound and playability is key too making games. Sound is bloody awesome. I can't stand MIDI any more. I run all my music through SWF format.

I use crappy little speakers on my PC, but I don't play many games on that anyway.

I have a Dolby Pro Logic 2 something something set up to my tv, and it really does make a difference for movies and console games, timesplitters 2 multiplayer rocks just that little bit hader. I dunno, maybe you tech heads will laugh at my setup, maybe you wont. I really have no idea what a good or bad sound system is.

I select only the best Mods in my collection for my games. Its a shame some click games crash with sound effects, so i dont use them.

Music for me is very important in games, i sometimes replay certain levels in games just to hear a good tune again.
infact im listening to some retro chiptune music right now.

Can someone recommend some decent PC speakers? I've been looking round for a while and can't find anything decent. Good sound quality & bass, not too expensive, not bothered about surround sound. Any recommendations? (Currently I'm stuck with flat panels + subwoofer which doesn't give a good range of frequencies)

Hmm... looks like I have quite a bit of a market for my idea for a business. Portable surround sound system that costs about as much as any other surround sound system - who wouldn't want one for Christmas . Also helps that I understand/appreciate sound systems AND games far more than many of my competitors.

Tigs:
I got a Somic headset last week for only RM20 (about $5). Has a good range of frequncies, suprisingly tough, looks cool, and unlike many other sound systems, it's got a microphone . Best thing that ever came from China.

Doom 3 (heck, even the other Dooms if you're retro) uses sound very well to immerse the player in the environment and to keep them on their toes even when there's no action happening. It's almost vital if your game requires immersion of any level, and it also helps to bring out the overall feel of the game.

Wharfedale used to make some quality speakers, but the stuff they make now is not up to the qualitity it used to but still good tho .

Wharfedale lintons or dovedales have got to be the best speakers ever, if hooked up to a good decent analogue amp and a decent record deck .

Not many people care for all these sound cards, because everyone knows that SoundBlaster is basicly the best, & as long as you can buy the newest soundcard with the newest speakers for half the price as the newest videocard, your set. I know its not the best, but I use SoundBlaster Live! LS 5.1, with a 5.1 seround sound system.
