And yes, I padded the time a bit, for two reasons:
1. If anyone has a gripe with the requirements, they can be worked out
2. Cause I felt like it.
so use the hours wisely.
=================
Goal: Make the best Mini Rpg
=================
Some standard Requirements:
* Separate RPG-ish Battle System (no Zelda/Secret of Mana types, cause those are RPG/Adv. Hybrids)
* Two quests
* 15 minutes of standard PLAYTIME (give or take a few, cause ppl play at different speeds)
===================
That's it, the only requirements, now we all know what an RPG "feels" like, and that's what we're going for here.
The time hits zero, I lock this thread, which is where the entries should be posted.
Judging will be public vote, but the added bonus of those who make games that meet the requirements will get two votes (that cannot be used to vote for thier own game).
The voting thread will be opened shortly after the entries are collected.
this may help people out, its an rpg tutorial some bloke made. Its more in depth than you could possibly hope to make in 72 hours but it may give some people help in other areas.
Oh! I feel sorry for you guys. Why? Because my RPG will be the best game evah! MOUAHAHAHA!!!
No, seriously. Im going to enter.
Just one question though, are you allowed to do like a card-based battlesystem, like Pokemon TCG. Or do you have to make that standard FF-crap?
Hi,
I'm not active at all in TDC (this is my first post), but I would like to try the competition.
Just some questions :
-How can we show the finished game (we have to post in this thread with the link)?
-The finished game must be in .exe or .cca format?
-How can you check if the game has really been started at May 26th?
Please answer me.
Random question....
Um, is the competition page that you get sent to by clicking on 'competition' in the navigator bar, really really old, or is that one running right now as well?!!

Suggestion for future competitions? Keeping a devolpement log. Nothing terribly complex, but something so you can see that the design was started from scratch, and not just something they've been working on for three months.
Only problem is it detracts from the already short time limit. But still, worth considering.

I started mine, but I don't feel like finishing it. That is to say I've already started working on something else. I've done the engine and a bunch of recordings for sound effects, so I might finish it one day.
Like Radix, I'm not going to continue on mine, although I did come up with a story and put some of the game together. However, summer classes just started today and I've got some killerocious work ahead of me, so this project is going to be on hold. However, I will definitely finish it considering the past two days of work that I put into it!
Darn it, I'll never make it in time. But I'll try though!
I created a turn based system already, now for some quests. It will be a short RPG though, but isn't that the goal?
And it's actually pretty good. There's no way anybody is beating this in less than 15 minutes. It's literally impossible.
But yeah. If we do any more RPG contests, there needs to be a longer time limit for the challenge - RPGs always take more time to make than other types of games.

yeh, well if i can't make it on time i'll submit it anyway
this was just crap timing coz i haven't had access to my computer almost at all when my mom's in town (lives in england, just visiting here), and with all exams, tests and stuff i just haven't had the time . Well, i'll at least try, but i doubt you'll see my game here before the deadline
Kinda defeats the point of having a short-term contest.
And some of us were stupid and designed everything around our time limit - 3 or 4 more days wouldn't do me much good now unless I start over. And I have to say, i'm not terribly interested in starting over right now. Have enough headaches with this thing as it is.

Yeah, this means we have the weekend to do our games, and because I had exams today and yesterday, working on it was interrupted a lot. To be perfectly honest I should have been revising, but it was only "Religious Studies" (read "Forced study earning half a GCSE").
I was originally going to give this a go, but I'm too busy w/ work and stuff to really dedicate enough time to it. I'm interested to see what people come up with tho, given the short timeframe.
Remember, you have to post your games in this thread before it's locked to be qualified. And if you don't have your game quite done, just post what you have.
Mine will only have one quest at the moment, if i have time i might put in a side quest! Ive got the battle system working perfectly now, including leveling up, just need to link it to the overworld.
BTW, is a non-turn based RPG okie, its not 'zelda-ish' but it is semi reaction based (ie blocking) kina like Mario and Luigi for the GBA.
15 minutes of playtime.
I don't care if the quest is to retrieve your eraser from the evil pencil..necks. It's a quest, right? Seriously, quest is being used lightly here.
I'm having Broadband troubles here at the moment (Dont trust BT Broadband for anything!) so I cant use BB or use my ISP website for hosting, which really doesn't help at a time like this!
So I'm gonna have to find a good host ASAP
Anybody know any good free ones? I just tried freewebs but they dont let anybody post .exe files if they havent been a member for more than 7 days
I forgot to mention, but isn't it a bad idea getting 2 extra votes if your game meets the requirements?
I think my game will reach the requirements, but if I get 2 extra votes because of that, then I wouldn't really want to use them because it would make it harder for me to win, if you see what I mean
I think I've almost finished. Mine have 2 principal quests and 2 optional quests. There's about 20/25 minutes of playtime, but I had to use some libs... at least it meets the requirements.
now this is awesome, glad to see that you guys have been working on it.
As for two votes for those who enter, no I think it's a good idea, keep in mind, that no-one will be allowed to vote for their own game. Consider it a stupid bonus for those of you who entered. Also, for prizes, DC Points/Custom Tags/Front Page Whorery will be the standard. Full details in the voting thread when It comes into existance later today.
As you can see, the graphics here are from MMF Libs (5 days is a too short period to make good GFX).
Here are the game features :
-Turn-based combat system
-Levelling system, up to 10 Levels, each time you gain a new level, you can choose the spell you want to upgrade (like in Diablo 2)
-4 mini-games to unlock (no, these Mini-Games aren't other mini-RPGs )
-(only) 10 enemies
-2 principal quests, 2 optional quests
-25 minutes of playtime (about 30-35 if you try the mini-games )
-saving system (I know, this isn't so original)
I hope you'll like it. It will be finished in 2 or 3 hours (but I'll test it a lot before uploading it, there is still some minor bugs).
Sorry guys, my game won't be finished in time. I'm busy with school and such, which is really stupid.
I'll finish the game later and submit it as a download. If it's ok, I'll show some screenies of what's done. My aim was to create a game with same style of those old RPGs on the nintendo. Small sprites and such.
Hey man, if you have 15 minutes of playtime, and two quests (no matter who stupid) you meet the requirements. You've got about 10 hours left, just try to make the requirements to enter it, and then finish it later. The more entries we get the better.
Well, this is what I managed to get done. The Battle Engine looks a lot better than it works, and I never got around to adding sounds or music. But the gameplay and quests are pretty much all there.
Description :
The World of Bernesia has been invaded by giant insects, led by a Giant Bee. Krom, a warrior who belong to the Knight Assembly, have to fight them and kill the Great Bee, and to discover how they appeared.
Features :
-Turn-based battle system. 4 upgradable spells (4 levels for each spell)
-Levelling system, up to 10 Levels. When you gain a new level, like in Diablo 2, you can choose which spell your will upgrade.
-2 Principal Quests, 3 Optional Quests. If you complete the quests, you can unlock some extras (4 funny mini-games, informations about the enemies)
-10 enemies.
-25 minutes of playtime (15 for the principal quest, 10 for the optional). +10 minutes if you want to try the Mini-Games.
-Automatic saving system (in the Map).
-An Arena where you can fight the same monsters, but more powerful (try to fight the last Boss when it has even more HP and Power ^^)
-New item system : all the items are hidden, you have to search for them by spending MPs and then remember where they appeared. You can do this during combat. These items are necessary to finish the game !
So...have fun. I hope you'll like this game. (even with the GFX for MMF libs, after all, the gameplay is more important than the GFX, isn't it? ). And good luck to everyone who take part in the competition, creating a RPG in 5 days was really fun. I hope there will be other compos like this one.
Considering the response on this comp was a hell of alot bigger than I figured, ya, I'll probably hold more comps with the public voting, just because it's way easier on me instead of trying to review/critique 12 entries while listening to everyone bitch about how long it's taking to get results, and then the backlash when some don't agree with the results.
I sorta cheated on the Overland engine, you'll notice the ground changes redraws every time you leave a town too. I was working on a cluttered timeline here with little RPG experience... i'm not terribly proud of it.
I think it looks a little nicer than the other submissions, but the gameplay and quests are nowhere near up to par with them.

You control Arthur Smith, a posh Knight who works for the King. Arthur uses a Crossbow as his main weapon of choice and can learn new magics on his travels.
The game meets the requirements, with 2 quests, around 15 minutes of gameplay and a seperate battle system.
Features:
*Original Theme Tune!
*Almost all original sounds, music and graphics
*Nice magic effects
*Voice acting for Arthur in battles
The quests are very straight forward to complete, and its a Mini-RPG so theres no saving or loading.
The controls are the arrow keys for moving around and the mouse for battles.
It's supposed to be pretty funny, so I hope you enjoy it!
Heres a screenshot: (I'm sorry that it's geocities)
Id enter one . . .was working on one with a friend , was a day late on hearing about the competition . .. Could have been finished by now but he went idle and never came back :/
Battle was pretty much done , overworld walking , ideas , etc .
. . . Ill just post as a regular download when its finished , possibly a few days . . .
Well, here's what's finished of my RPG so far. I doubt I'll have it totally done by midnight, so I'll release the finished version on the downloads page in one or two days.
-ATB FF style battle with allies(can't get allies in incomplete version yet although it works when tested).
-3 quests:
++get out of Burnt Cookie Woods alive
++defeat the 12-year-old pker noob who's raiding the village
++save the royal refridgerator from the meteorologist imps
-has 5 bosses(some are optional)
-no saving system yet
-controls: arrows to move, enter to check/choose to do something, shift for menu, hold ctrl to run
Right now I'm about halfway done making the Meteorologist Imp Cave. At most I'll have that done by midnight.
I like yours, Snerlin. It's a bit hard, but pretty impressive. How exactly are you supposed to heal aside from the lone muffin in the treasure chest? I got the bejezzus beat out of me.

Well, I can't manage to deal with the Data Store Object (and it crashing every 10 seconds), so I'm backing out. It's too bad, a FFT RPG might have won...
If anyone wants to try and fix/modify my entry, heres the open source. Do whatever you want with it, I hate it (and that Data Store Object). Hopefully the next comp won't need saving... as I appear to be incompetent with anything within reason.
Thanks to my friends sorta encouragement, I have finshed Koinion's Ability. Koinion's Ability is about a guy who lives in a village and has to go see the King. The king will tell him to go get a item and bring it back to him, that is all the main quests I got done, because, I started late on the competition. There is a sub-quest sorta thing, getting married (More info in the instructions.)
I was trying to go for a SNES feel with the graphics. Anywho, My Cousin, Uncle, and Brother helped me mess around and do some of the sounds and music stuff and my Cousin was bored, I think, so she made a tree and a monster for the game, and the rest was all Me (Wanted to let everyone know.)
I'd have had some screenshots, but I'm borrowing webspace as it is for this. Anyway, try it out, you might find it mildly amusing for 2-3 45-50 seconds.
I had no time to do any good gfx
U can't use items or summon in battle (i didnt finish that bit) you can use items outside battle though
Dont forget to equip SAPPHIRE when you aquire it, it gives you ice magic
It would be nice to have all the submissions organized into a nice frontpage post so people don't have to scroll back through the pages to find everything.
Actually, I really like it. It's incredibly creative and really neat. The artwork all fits together nicely and the gameplay is creative. There's just a few places where it feels a little rough (two building on the world map, how slow combat is, etc) but it's awesome.
You should keep working on this after the competition, this would be an awesome RPG.
Shame there isn't any actual quests or anything.
