I think it's time for some controversy. Everyone post some of their strongest, most potentially-offensive opinions here. And Phizzy is obviously going to take the piss.
Soldiers are not heroes.
Islamic Extremists (AKA 'Terrorists') have a lot of balls and are doing what we were all taught in kindergarten: Fighting for what they believe in. They're still wrong to kill thousands of people, but so are American and Australian soldiers.
There is no excuse for voluntarily joining the army.
Coffee has more caffeine than tea.
Anyone who calls themselves a 'Proud Australian' or a patriot of any kind, is sad and has nothing real to believe in and must instead hang on to some outdated and illogical concept of a 'nation'.
Firefighets aren't heroes, as well as soldiers...they're just doing their job!
Same sex marriage or civil union should be legal!
Beaches..all of them should be free!!!! fuck these private shit.
Reality exists only in memories. If something is forgotten, it never occured. If a person is forgotten, they never existed. The only way to have ever lived is to be remembered.
Extremists must all be destroyed before they destroy us. We have done nothing to them that they didnt cause.
Yes there is a god damn fucking excuse for voluntarily joining the army. Lets look back at world war 2 when the japanese went crazy thought they were the master race and wanted to take over the world. They had taken over china, hawaii, new guini, etc. They were attacking australia and if there were wasnt anyone joining the army australia would be run by the japs. America had to drop 2 atomic bombs on japan to make them finally stop.
Same thing but on a smaller scale is happening with the islamic extremeists.
Mexicans who are protesting immigration laws in the USA, should all be sent back home. They are staining and making the rest of the Americas look bad. They say the latino population needs to unite, and right after the statement, they say mexicans should show the US what is to be without them...what happened to the rest of Latin America? They are stupid...go home!
I hate this latino label as well, they make me look like im just like them!
I'm just loving Firespell's views. Never has an opinion been so far off the mark.
- Islamic extremists are doing what they think is right. If you truly believed that to appease your God you had to kill folks you would take it as a necessary evil.
- National pride is viewed as negative by people like Teapot, but it really isn't an "empty belief". The trouble only comes when people use it as an excuse to attack people who aren't from their nation.
- Mac OSX is the worst OS there is.
- People who come through a long and painful illness are not "brave". They don't have a choice, do they? It's not as if they chose to suffer, they just did.
- Meat is good for health, and good for satisfaction. Vegetarians are all just attention-seekers who jump on the populist bandwagon.
- Foreign immigration is what keeps the superpowers going.
- Drugs are overrated.
Soldiers are not heroes. Yes immigration is what keeps superpowers going, but the way things are going isn't the way things should be. Let them fuck everything up to everyone else.
Someone who saves a life/dies for what they believe in are heros.
Also, there was a draft in WWII, in case you didn't know. They didn't have a choice.
And then there were the kids who snuck into the millitary to fight German/Japanese fuckers. If you're saying the Doolittle Raiders weren't heros, then you're fucked in the head.
Fine Garbage since 2003.

Ive not really thought about it much, but Soldiers are doing what they're trained to do so it's nothing special when they go to war.
However if they do something beyond the line of duty and are awarded a medal or something, then maybe they can be called heroes.

I think soldiers are a special case. Most people "doing what they're trained to" don't spend the majority of their career in immediate mortal peril. Even fewer people are asked to kill others or sacrifice themselves. You can debate the semanticity of whether or not soldiers are "heroes" (I think they are, for the record -- at least a vast majority) but to lump them in with everyone else who does just a 9-5 day job, like you're doing, Andy, is completely wrong.
majority of their career in immediate mortal peril
What? No. Wars are an occasional thing. The majority of the world's soldiers do almost nothing but training exercises for their entire career. If military peril is your measure of heroism, then surely the guys that get their arses handed to them daily by US troops are greater heroes.
There's a big difference between defending your country and serving the aggressor.

I'd wager most soldiers see active combat at least once. Wars are pretty regular nowadays, if you hadn't noticed. Iraq... Afghanistan... Kosovo... Iraq... Falklands... (for the UK at least).

Radix: not really. "Hero" is deictic; one man's hero is another man's terrorist. If I say UK soldiers are heroes and some Iraqi says the insurgent rebels are heroes, then in no-one's eyes do we have heroes killing heroes, simply heroes killing aggressors.
It's an interesting question actually about how long soldiers spend in a warzone. And even if they're not "at war", for instance peacekeeping, I'd suggest that they'd be a target and therefore in peril. The heroism in my eyes is really that they are willing to be put in danger at any time rather than necessarily being at war the whole time. And the potential for that to happen exists and you certainly don't get it in other occupations, which was my initial point.
These 80 men struck back at Japan when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. They were to launch off a tiny barge (which didn't have enough room to get the planes off the ground). They beat the odds, and almost all the ships left the barge. They bombed Japan (they deserved it!). But they didn't have enough gas to get back, and so they bailed out, landing in the freezing ocean.
1. Several of them drowned in the waters
2. Some were kidnapped by the Japanese, put on an unfair trial, beaten, and left in a stinking cell. Most of them died. Four came back.
3. Some were captured by the Germans and put in some of the most infamous death camps.
4. Some escaped with some rebel Chinese people (not a joke).
And now there's only 11 out of 80 alive.
They crippled Japan, risking their lives for your ungreatful asses.
Fine Garbage since 2003.

And what would be your definition of hero, exactly?
Most likely it's some who saves the planet or something gay like that.

Allow me to quote Michael Moore for you Noodle. Maybe it's more applicable to the USA but I'd still say it's resonant of the truth:
"I've always been amazed that the very people forced to live in the worst parts of town, go to the worst schools, and who have it the hardest are always the first to step up, to defend us. They serve so that we don't have to. They offer to give up their lives so that we can be free. It is remarkably their gift to us."
It was a poem which started off, "I am" and finished off, "my only friend". So technically my quote is correct! Yes, I are winner, and therefore pass go and collect £200.
Oh man, I'm gonna get lot's of hate mail over these:
-Mac OS X really is the most advanced OS on the planet.
-Bill Gates is an idiot.
-Americans aren't any stupider than the rest of the world.
-Most people here are too harsh on n00bs.
-Applications are better than games.
-High end software should be about 10 times cheaper than it currently is.
-MMF beats TGF by alot
-Mac OS X is the best OS i've ever used (Like Jimmi Said)
-Global Warming is real
I think that's it...
@Lazarus a few posts back: "You fucking twit". twit? Is that a reference to This Week in Tech or just a coincidence?
Hey, those are just my oppinions! If you don't agree with them that's fine with me as long as you aren't so self centered that you insult people who don't think like you.
And just because I didn't know that TWiT is an insult doesnt mean I'm a fucktard", it just means that I am still a n00b, which I'll admit I am.
Ok. I think if you join a Islamic extremist groups you've got more balls than joining a country. If you join a 'terrorist' organisation, you're choosing the losing side, and fighting for what you believe is right. If you join the US army, you're fighting for the owinning side.
I'm still not saying that the so-called terrorists are right (they are murderers), just that everyone seems to have an outdated view of right and wrong.
So the point of this post was to bring up points of debate that are the most extreme to do what? Make the most extreme arguments. You bring us one step closer to love Teapot.
Now let's make things clear from "my opinion":
Mac OS X isn't as good or bad as said by anyone in their respective opinion.
"War Hero" is only acceptable under certain circumstance. The "Hero's" that go to war to kill nazi assholes are not hero's but idiots.
Hating any religion is fine, but keep it to yourself, much like any race or other cultural decision. In most cases much like being raised to believe something they don't have a choice to believe anything else so all they know is to defend it. You should know and respect that.
The moon landing (by now) is probably real.
Michael Moore is an idiot and only brings up points everyone knows and then gets recognition for standing up for a right that others stand up for but don't have the will or ability to make public. Often claiming others better then others to get that obvious advantage.
Noodle's not a fucktard, he's just trying to piss you off. Think.
American's aren't any more stupid then the rest of the world, politicians are.
Now someone lock this already before it escalates further.
thinking is like pong, it's easy, but you miss sometimes.
