I was wondering, what kind of games do you play/like best? Are you a fan or platformers? or are RPGs your thing? or maybe you'd prefer some kind of strategy game?
What do you think about the new gaming consoles and advances in technology? Do you think DS/PSP/X360 are worthwile consoles? Are they the next big thing? Or just a small improvement on predecessors.
With the wireless internet connections, do you think that almost all games will become WiFi enabled? And what of sprites? Will sprites disappear from the face of the earth as we step into the era of 3d?
And also, what are your thoughts on MMF2? I personally can't wait!
PS Thanks for reading to the bottom, I salute you!
Personally, I enjoy Unreal Tournament 2004, and PlanetSide. I'm not big on any other FPS however. I enjoy the RollerCoaster Tycoon series, and Super Smash Bros Melee. About a week ago I downloaded the Prey Demo, and personally, I can't wait till the full version comes out. The storyline is great, the graphics are amazing, and the online play is a true work of art. I just wish it had more weapons, maybe in the full game? I don't know.
As far as my views on MMF2. Personally, I remember back in 2003, people asking "when is MMF2 coming out" and others replying "it should be out soon" and in response "should I buy MMF 1.5, knowing MMF2 is just around the corner?" so the fact that MMF2 is coming out is pretty cool, but I think they announced it to soon and had us hyping it up a little to long. On the other hand, I believe in the end, it'll be worth it. We've all been stuck with 50fps games that slow down almost all the time when you try to push it up to a professional grade game. So MMF2 should make things very interesting. I'll be ordering it if not this Friday, on the 14th. My parents are helping me pay the difference, I already have $80 on me.
As far as the new gamming consoles, I think the DS is overrated, but I haven't played one, so I can't honestly judge. The PSP is pretty underrated, considering what it can do compared to most other gamming hand helds. As far as the X360 however, I must say that it is one of the most overrated systems out there. The quality is not much better then your every day PC game, even if it is a huge step from current gen consoles. Playstation 3 shows some promise however, but near half a thousand? I think I'll pass for now. I don't even want half of the stuff they are packing into the system, I just want to play nice games.
I'm not sure how to say this without sounding like Jack Thompson, but I think violence has become too popular as far as games go. Everyone now seems to be trying to make as many GTA clones as possible, and I'd be surprised if any of the younger generation of gamers have played a game where you don't shoot people in the head. I enjoy UT/Quake3 as much as anyone else, but endless FPSses and free-roamers tend to blur into one after a while.
Another issue is the leap forward that is being made as far as graphics are concerned. The XBox 360 and PS3 are both being sold on the strength of their graphics processing hardware, and while games can now look incredible, I think it's the wrong emphasis to make. I think that in both UT2007 and the new Sonic game (which are otherwise two rather disparate games), the developers are saying that every character model uses at least a million polygons, and that every blade of grass is treated as a separate object. Impressive, but that's just getting silly.
It seems that the jump from the N64/PS1 generation to the Dreamcast was a gigantic step in graphical capability, but the progression to the next generation now just seems more of a logical small step.
In fact, though I've never been a Nintendo person, I think the abominably-named "Wii" is looking the most interesting now. It looks like it's going to put some innovation and enjoyment back into games.
I could go on about this for ages, but I'll wait a few posts before starting on 2D vs. 3D and the new handhelds.
I think things are going to be changing a lot. This is truly the most unique generation yet. You have the DS, a very unique portable vs. the PSP, basically a portable home console. Then you have the wii, completely different than any console before it. You have the newby, Microsoft, going up against PS3 directly. Then there's Sony, with the most expensive console ever (Mainstream console, please don't bring up defunct systems of the 1990s) who is betting everything they have on an untested media format and using the PS3 to push it out the door. Things are going to change around a lot after this. Based on the pricing of the PS3, the 360 is going to start leveling out the playing field. Sony will no longer be on top (at least by as much) at the end of this generation. Think about it, the reason PS1 and PS2 are in so many homes is that they have a huge line up of games AND are affordable. The PS2 has dropped in price by half in 5 years since its launch. What happens when the PS3 does the same? $250! That is hardly an impulse purchase, especially when at that same time the wii will be down to about $99 and a 360 will probably be at $150. Then you have the cost of their new format. . . And a lot of people predicting a failure of HD-DVD AND Blu-ray.
And on that last remark on the failure of the new formats (sorry I have to go on)
When DVD came out VHS had been around for nearly 20 years. DVD had a lot of things going for it, No rewinding, Clearer picture, Menus, special features, and it came on shiny discs which was fancy at the time. What's the difference between DVD and the new formats? Increased resolution and some more space, although I'm not sure how much more special features we really need on these discs.
And how many people can take advantage of the new formats? Everyone with a TV could make use of DVD. But the only way to get anything out of the new formats is to have an HDTV. It's estimated around 15%-20% of homes have an HDTV. And they're launching new formats now. So 15%-20% of people can take advantage of it. That's hardly a dent compared to 100% being able to use DVD. Even if in the next 5 years it goes up to 80% of people with an hdtv, how many of those will actually be getting the new players. . .And how long will the companies backing these formats stick with it? If HALF of the people with hdtvs buy a high definition player that's 40% by 2010! You've still got 60% of households using a dvd player. . .Then there's the confusion of having 2 competing players out there with certain studios only backing one or another. They say one has to win eventually, but look at the massive companies supporting them. None of them are going to back down easily from this fight, and it could go on and on and on and on. . . just like I have been.
Saturn launched at US $399. PS3 $499 US. I don't know what the conversion is but I can't imagine the saturn converted to more than the PS3 but I guess it could have depending on the conversion rate at the time.

Thanks for the salute
And sprites shall almost dissapear exept mabey plat formers
I like RTS and FPS
And what ever kind MGS's are
the small ahnd held video games consels are not worth the money for somthing like that but on the other hand large consels are trying to jump in to the future to fast.
As long as they crank out good 2d games (like they do for the GBA, and to some degree, the DS) I'll be happy! And backwards compatibility for any new system coming out is HUGE in my book. The Wii can download all the great old games that got me into gaming in the first place, in addition to some exciting new technology to fuel some new direction.
MMF2, while I'm sure will be great, won't be for me until a long time though. I still have a lot to learn with the $99 I spent on MMF1.5, so that's what I'll be sticking with for now. That, and VB6 of course.

I bought an Xbox 360 the date of the US launch in November, and it's been collecting dust ever since. I play an occasional game of Geometry Wars, but none of the commercial releases have held my attention. The system offers nothing new -- just flashier versions of games I've played before. Aside from Halo 3, Phantasy Star Universe, Too Human, and Lost Odyssey there really isn't anything I'm really looking forward to either.
The PS3 is going to face the same problems. It brings nothing new to the table except for better graphics and Blu-Ray. On paper, it's only marginally more powerful than the 360 (and even saying that much is a dubious claim). Again though, we're going to be playing prettier versions of what we've played before. Blu-Ray is completely worthless to most gamers (since only those who own 1080p sets will really be able to notice a difference in quality when watching movies), and every single Sony format has failed (beta, mini-disc, umd, and memory sticks to a lesser extent). When you combine all of this with a $600 price tag (the $500 version lacks HDMI output, which is the only way to benefit from Blu-Ray's 1080p resolution), games that will be at least $60 (and maybe more since blank Blu-Ray media costs upwards of $20 compared to a $0.10 DVD), and reports that Sony will not allow a second-hand market on games through vendors like EB, and you're looking at a system that would be DOA if it didn't carry the Sony name.
Surprisingly (given that I'm not a Nintendo fan), Wii is the only system that has me really excited. It is going to be the only new console that lives up to the title of being "next-gen" from a gameplay perspective. The motion-sensitive technology is going to open up a world of creativity for talented developers. Another nice perk for devs is that it runs on what is essentially pimped-out Gamecube hardware, which means they'll be able to dive right into the system and push it farther faster. Sure, it may not be able to render scenes as complex as the PS3 and Xbox360, but it should still be able to top the best of the last-gen offerings with ease. On top of everything else, the price is right. I think most gamers would much rather have an Xbox360 and a Wii than pay the same price for the PS3. The "Wii60" combo offers the best of both worlds for the hardcore crowd, and the Wii alone is ideal for casuals, non-gamers, and people who have just grown sick of the path gaming has traveled down over the last 5 years or so. Granted, to me, none of this matters, since I was sold on the Wii the second they announced Super Smash Bros Brawl.
As for sprites, I don't see them going anywhere fast. If anything, there could be a revival. I actually see a resurgance of SNES-style games (and perhaps SNES games themselves) with the Virtual Console on Wii. Between that and Xbox Arcade, there is a perfect spot for 2D games and both classic and experimental game design.
In regards to MMF 2, I'm planning to buy it. Don't know if I'll ever use it for anything more than making cool tech demos, but who knows. I have a lot of game ideas, but just haven't had the time or the drive to do anything with them. If Clickteam could somehow find a way to make the games compatable with either the Wii, or Xbox Arcade, or even the DS/PSP, I think there would be a rush of new talent into the community, and a lot more enthusiasm from the current members.
"Everyone now seems to be trying to make as many GTA clones as possible, and I'd be surprised if any of the younger generation of gamers have played a game where you don't shoot people in the head."
Actually, I'm 13, and I don't see much in those games. I love old retro games like the NES, SNES, and Genesis. I have all of those, and sold my gamecube to get a full-sized functional DigDug arcade machine. It's older than I am.
For the record, the claims about Sony not allowing people to trade in games are untrue.
*Note this is probably the only thing positive I can say about sony for a while. . . at least until the PS3 has proven itself with a game library as good as the PS1 and PS2. . . and the price comes down.
So the "romour" about games only working on the system it plays on first is untrue? Atleast now it is? Nice.. I remember that was a big fear when I heard that at E3/05
A lot of the bad things being said about sony are untrue. Now whether or not they deserve to have these rumours spread about them is something different altogether.
I have a ps2 and there are some great games on it, but sony's head has swelled to enormous proportions since then and they seem to be shoving a stick up their follower's asses because they can. While many of those "sony fanboys" probably deserve it for being morons, there are a lot of people who truly like the games that are released for sony's consoles, and are getting slapped in the face with this rediculous price tag due to the bluray being shoved down their throats. The idiots will try to justify it because they don't realize they're being used, but the other people (me) who were planning on getting a PS3 are losing faith here. I don't have $500 right now, I don't want bluray, and in 5 years when the next generation is nearing, the PS3 is going to be sitting there with a price tag of at least $200. No thanks.
The fact that sony even bothered to create this technology is a bad idea, what the heck is wrong with using dvds with this current generation? now they're going to charge us way more than they needed to.
anyway this generation is going to be more of the same with more polygons and flashier graphics. Somewhat like the jump from 32/64 to 128bit.
Wow! Is Too Human still in production? I remember when that was announced as a GC launch game. Weird. Infact, a lot of the originally announced GC games never saw the light of day: Picasso, that one with a bunch of girls set in Athens, Meowth's Party...
Thanks for replying guys, all your posts are quite eye opening. Have you heard that Wii wont support HDTV? That suits me fine, as I dont have/want one. As for the future of sprites, I guess as long as people keep making stuff on MMF then sprites will never die. Of course, when someone comes up with MMF5 or something that makes 3d games really easy to make... then I might go for the 3D. But, there is something special about spritework... even if it is out of date
I agree that there has not been anything quite as special as N64/PS1... those consoles really brought us out of the sprites
Sprites and 2d games are only out of date when nobody wants to play them anymore, which doesn't look like that will happen anytime soon. Look at the Castlevania franchise. Somebody tell me they like the 3d games better than their 2d ones. You could almost make the same argument for Metroid, but Prime was pretty good.
