Same here, I can't win that game (or come close to winning it!) NR won't be half as hard as ED though, so at least anyone who's somewhat decent at gaming should have no problem seeing the ending.

There was a time when those games were damn popular because only a few people could win them, and they'd only win with a lot of effort, experience, and skill. These days, if you mess up, you could load. If you die early, waste too much money, or lose a football match in some football league, you could load. Heck, in some games you could even turn back time whenever you take a fatal hit or fall off a ledge.
Ends up not having any challenge. The worst part of it is that they counter the lack of challenge by giving you a difficult, frustrating level, where you could only save at certain spots, though the game will try to rip you apart between the spots.
I miss the good ol days of games like Golden Axe and Animaniacs where you could win the game in one sitting, but would only sometimes win.
The best system I've seen is in Counter-Strike: Condition Zero, where you have to win a certain amount of times, pass certain objectives for the level, but the possibility of losing badly is always there. Another great system is in Football Manager, where you have to quit the game to load. Sure, you can quit and load when you lose an important game.. but then you'd lose the atmosphere of playing an important game as well, and most of the fun of football is the tension.. a win in the finals by loading a game even once won't be even half as fun as losing a game to a good opponent in the semis.
So, I guess, the best way would be making it hard enough to win... but not making it impossible to win if the player did badly. Thus, the player would still try his/her best to win even though he/she already lost an earlier level. E.g. for a platformer, the player has to collect a certain amount of cash to go to the next act, but if the player dies in a level, he/she gets to keep half the cash he/she got, but still gets to play other levels and has a chance at getting enough cash.
Disclaimer: Any sarcasm in my posts will not be mentioned as that would ruin the purpose. It is assumed that the reader is intelligent enough to tell the difference between what is sarcasm and what is not.
I know what you mean about loading whenever you mess up. My brother has some basketball game for the PS2 that he was doing a season with. Whenever his team would lose, he'd restart it and play until he won the game and THEN save it. That's cheap! I started a regular season in MLB2K5 and kept all the losses in there because at least it was official / not cheating. I think over the first 10 games I was 2-8 because I was still learning, but eventually I got better and the standings reflected my skills more accurately.
As for NR, I was thinking that the more times you win the game (or get enough points or whatever they're going to be called), would mean that you start off with slightly more HP and MP. That way you'd be rewarded, but not too much right off the bat. Kind of like beating Dracula fast or without getting hit in the beginning of Castlevania SOTN, where Alucard starts off with a bit more HP as a bonus if you do well with Richter at the start.

I don't see why. Most action / platformers don't have a save system anyhow. Imagine Super Mario Brothers with a save system- it wouldn't work! Half the fun of that game is trying to win the whole thing in one sitting anyhow.
