I've been thinking of starting on a short arcade-style game project, and the first thing that came to my mind was something that would...
- play from a sidescrolling platform perspective
- have a large part of its gameplay mechanics based on flight
- involves shooting as a means of combat, to make for an arcade-style shooter
- maybe racing elements too

Anyone think it'd work well? Any tips/advice?

Yeah. I could come up with something like that. Something formed in my head after I read that.

I'm hoping to hear other people's ideas.

I tried combining lots of styles into one game before. Unless you do it REALLY well it just looks like your too lazy to stick at one game.

hm... basically though I'm trying to come up with a game that wouldn't be too difficult to make, but would be unique enough as to not be completely generic. The idea that came to my mind was a sidescroller focusing on flight-based gameplay--similar to how something like Densetsu no Stafy is a sidescroller focusing on swimming-based gameplay, and Sonic the Hedgehog focuses on speed-based gameplay. And then from that I wondered if maybe I could incorporate other things in too (some of which ended up being somewhat random, i.e. racing).

OMG! Taj the elephant! Man, I loved that guy! Why did they take his voice of of the DS remake?

"Alakazam!"
"Abakazoo!"
"Can I Help you Further?"
"Bye-bye For Now! "

Classic.

hm... well I probably still won't keep the racing idea regardless, in the meantime I've fleshed out my idea a little.

As the player flies, gravity gradually pulls him downward. You have to keep moving to keep him airborne.

To do this, you hold [S] to accelerate. The faster you accelerate, the more difficult it is to maneuver around in the air.

The spacebar allows you to shoot.

Tapping [A] allows you to hop in mid-air (i.e. Super Smash), maintaining your acceleration but keeping it constant until it is pressed again.

Tapping the arrow keys twice in any direction also allows you to quickly dodge towards that direction.

Well, you would race to shoot down all objects before anyone else does, and it would be like driving a car in an overhead view, but with a plane at a side view.

that's a pretty good idea...
it'd probably be a good way I could implement the game's cast of supporting characters, like you could compete against them in certain scenarios or something.
