There's to be a lovely price drop on these come Friday. £200 for the standard one (not Arcade or Elite). Really considering picking one up! My bro's got all the big games so I'll just use his games.

Only question is; where should I get it from? For the best bundles like.

Also need a VGA adapter but let me sort that out

£200 though. Bugger me! Just £20 more than a Wii!

It's a good system with a great library as long as you're willing to overlook the fact that the things die faster than black guys in horror movies.

I bought mine through Gamestop -- never been a fan of bundles. Whatever you do, don't waste your money on an extended warranty since the system ships with a 3-year on general hardware failures (3 red lights).

And one quick note on the VGA adapter: it tends to wash out the image somewhat. The resolution bump is nice if you don't own an HDTV, but if you do component or HDMI is still the ideal solution.

I personally found it was a bit boring, to be honest. I've played a few FPS games, and the aiming's not a patch on a mouse. In Halflife2, that's problematic since bad guys are very sharp shooters.

Why more games don't emulate Goldeneye's system I'll never know (move forwards/back/left/right with stick, strafe with left and right buttons, aim by holding shoulder pad and moving stick around. Even then, aim carries a dampening effect so you aim within your current field of view, and it has a nice snap-back. Very, very easy to master).

Once you get over the graphics, I found it didn't really do much for me. I already have a system for playing movies, CDs, etc. It seems almost everything these days comes with a home cinema built in, not just the consoles. My surround sound DVD player can practically boil an egg.

Anyway, that's how I felt. It may be a home entertainment system, but I wanted to play games on it, and I found the games on that were seldom different to the stuff I had on a PS2. I'm not a great fan of the next gen consoles, found 'em to be a huge dissapointment.

Sorry for not replying last night, James! oops

Well, I have an Elite and sure it's a great High Def gaming console but there are some things that do irriate me a fair bit. Possibly things that shouldn't really, but they are making me wish I got a PS3 instead!

Basically, the only problems I have with the 360 is that to play games online you must pay £40 per year. Not bad, but PS3 offers this service free of charge. Also, one of the reasons I switched to Macs is because my PC was so noisey. Same goes for the 360 - It's alright when watching DVD's or playing arcade games/demos off the HDD, but when you play a game on a disk the system tunrs into a vacuum cleaner! It's faily loud(At leat I think so), I find I have to turn the volume up on the TV when using it. =/

I wouldn't worry about RRoD though, I've had my 360 in a small shelf under my desk for a couple of months with no ventalation and never even seen the RRoD before. Apat from all this, it is pretty good. Theres a great selection of games and Live Arcade games too, so theres sure to be plenty for you to be gettign on with if you do get one.

I love my PS3 to be honest :\ TF2 online is great too.

I've never really liked Xbox but I guess I'm a Nintendo/Sony fanboy really.

Ah yea I forgot about noise.

I'm still a bit unsure. There aren't any games that I'd like, I use my PC for FPS and my PSP for RPGs. GTA4 I'm looking forward to. But I'm still not sure.

I'll be needing VGA though. It'll be in my room and I only have monitors in here. It'll run 1080p though but it's only 22", after seeing my friends and brother's 30-48" bedroom TV's I might cry inside a little

I heard that Microsoft paid a large sum on money to Rockstar to make some 360 exclusive content for GTA IV. Not sure wha tit is exactly, or if it will eventually come to the PS3 anyway. If I had both a PS3 and a 360 and a game came out for both systems I'd probably always buy it on PS3 just because of the noise of the Xbox. Some games I'm sure arn't as noisey as others - It just depends on how hard to 360 has to work to play it I guess.

The reason I bought a PS3 was mainly because most of the games for the 360 end up on PC anyway (Gears of War, Mass Effect, maybe Halo 3 eventually). Also I'm a bit of a Playstation fanboy. So that way I can still play the great 360 games (sure a bit late, but I'm quite patient) and still play games like GTA4, MGS4, God of War 3 and LittleBigPlanet.

But then again I know you're not exactly a big Sony/PS3 fan for whatever reasons. If you're going to get a 360, I'd recommend not being tempted by the cheapest option. I've read on forums that the cheaper models don't have enough hard drive space and all that sort of stuff (which is important if you're going to download patches and games off the arcade). The other option is to build a new PC or upgrade your current PC to run games like Crysis (if it's possible anyway). I've just bought some parts to build a new PC from scratch and it goes above the recommended requirements for Crysis, and it cost me under £500.

You seem set on buying a 360 though - so if you really want it then go for it. As far as bundles go - there aren't really many good ones as far as I can tell. You can get an Xbox 360 elite for £300, with a game, at game.co.uk which isn't a bad price. Or you can get the premium model with a game for £250. The elite would definitely be worth the extra £50 though.

Edit: Gamestation.co.uk actually has the premium model with a game for £200, so yeh that would obviously be the better offer. Just look around I guess.

I'd avoid the non-HDMI bundles. Those are refurbs. My gf's brother got one for christmas, it died like 2 months later. Regarding the washed out VGA image, I think they fixed that in a dashboard update.

Well, if you do get an extended warranty, you can just exchange it in the store you bought it instead of sending it off to microsoft.

The 360 ships with one of three different disc drives. The BenQ one is fairly quiet.

I wouldn't recommend the Elite model. 13 gb (the space actually available, the rest is reserved for Xbox 1 compatibility) is plenty unless you plan on using the video rental service or buy Xbox Originals.

I thought the HDD was bumped up to 80gb or so?

PS3 is out of the question. All my friends are 360/PC/Wii players so I wouldn't have anyone to borrow games from or play against. Plus they dropped PS2 compatibility and it's £100 more expensive than a 360. And I really don't like that controller. And there's no VGA cable? Sorry I'm not trying to start up a little console war but right now it doesn't do what I need it to do.

Should be getting paid on friday. Never know I might come back with an iPhone (that said I tried writing a reply to this thread from my mothers iPod Touch and yea, was a bit tricky!)

It is rumoured future premium 360s will have a 60 gb harddrive. But the Premiums in store now have 20 gb harddrives.

I take it 20gb will be enough though? My bros got about 50 or so games and chances are I'll have save files for most of them. And a few downloaded demos and XBLA games.

Xbox Live games are capped at 150 MB
Demos generally take up between 500 MB and 1.5 GB
DLC ranges depending on the game, but Halo 3's is already pushing 1 GB
Save games take up virtually no space

Keep in mind that you can store all your music and movie files on your PC and then just stream it to the Xbox 360 (this works in-game as well for custom soundtracks). And also keep in mind that once you've paid for something, you can re-download it as many times as you want. Personally, I've had my 360 since launch (well, technically this is number two since the first one RRoD'd), and I've yet to fill up the 20GB drive. Then again, if you ever plan to upgrade in the future, it might be better to get the Elite now than pay the inflated prices for the stand-alone hard drive.

The biggest downloads are the Xbox originals. Ninja Gaiden Black takes 6 gigabytes of space.
