Just noticed that the download numbers have increased quite a lot recently at TDC if you compare to previous months. Is this due to better games, higher user numbers or new spotlight feature, well maybe all of those, but it's definitely a positive thing and proves that the community is alive at least what comes to downloading.
Take a look at the download list: when was the last time when there have been 7 titles with over 100 downloads among the 30 latest games/apps submitted? We won't probably ever get to know the answer to that, but I guess it's over 3 years ago. So that's not too common.
By the way those titles to exceed 100 downloads in just 4-20 days are:
- Lily
- FIG
- Impossible
- R.P.G.
- Custom Platform Engine
- Baby Ghost Engine
- Desktop RPG
Just said to one of my teammates how it's funny Bernard & Hank 2 was only downloaded about 100 times after 2 months, and now a small game like Lily got downloaded 100 times after a coupla days. TEH COMMUNITY IS RISING FROM THE DEAD.
The predators in the community died because of lack of food, so the little people are overpopulating. Once the number of noobs reach a critical level, overcompetition between noobs will require them to either evolve into actively contributing members or predators, and the excess noobs will allow a re-proliferation of noob-bashing predators (i.e. resurrect TK).
It's population science!

It will be really interesting to see what impact Peblo's competition will have on the activity of the site. And to see what great games people can come up with.
I do feel like it's a bit like the good ol' days. Back when it was OK to post a pong game without getting flamed to tears. Lately, I see the bad games just getting ignored, as they should be

Which makes me very sad. Not the summer part, I don't really enjoy summer anymore, but I'm sad that school is coming back. I go back September 24th. Lucky me, eh?
I don't think bad games being ignored is a good thing really. Why would starters post anything here if their not gonna get any feedback? I know I shouldn't be talking, I ignore most of the games.

Because they shouldn't get lots of fan mail for making bad games. Nor should they get flamed for making a bad game. So, the best way would be to get a lot of good comments for a good game and barely a few for a bad game

Maybe, Muz. However, negative feedback shouldn't be confused with criticism. Criticism is directed at the person and doesn't tackle the actual subject, only the person. Negative feedback is tough on the game, not the person, and so can be used to make improvements. Negative feedback is more often than not offered with suggestions for improvements. This then becomes a conversation which, unlike criticism, is two-way and leads to positive outcomes (improvements, new friends, collaborations etc) and this can only be a good thing.
To ignore someone's efforts completely sends out a very negative message: no-body cares. This is similar to being critical and both can be de-motivating and damaging to Clickers.
I have to agree with everyone here though, the community does seem better than ever. I have only been a member for a few months but visited the site off and on for years, and i noticed the difference. As well as many of the offensive members leaving, could the fact that this site is so much more stable be a contribution too? It may be more than a coincidence that the stability of the site and the increase in downloads happened within weeks of each other!

If that were true, I wouldn't mind it at all. Unfortunately, it almost never works out that way

Also a utopian concept. Two-way, true, but hardly ever positive.
Not that I mind criticism, sometimes. I just don't like how it goes. I take the liberty of deleting excessively negative criticism sometimes

I think it is really interesting to help people with something you know a lot about yourself. After I have given some extensive critisism to a game that can be improved, the developer sometimes ask for some more help, and I am happy to share my knowledge of clicking and graphics and such.
When you give someone a piece of code, or concrete examples of what he could make better in a game and why it is better, then it is not at all impossible that this person learn something from this, and is encouraged to keep building on a project.
It's true that there is a friendly atmosphere here now... So, when will the girls start to arrive?
Oh, girls are hard to bring into here. Mainly it's because there's like a thousand guys to one girl, so the ratio scares of the natural instincts of many girls Two conditions need to be met for the less game-fanatical female:
1. Other girls are there too
2. They don't get treated harshly
The first condition is easy enough to meet. For those of you who want to make a fake profile, make a female one. Not that I'd encourage fake profiles, it's just that I can't stop you either way, so at least make yourself useful

One is the demo for my game, one is the actual game. The demo, a few years ago, gets more downloads than the ACTUAL game, because TDC was so much more active back then. And it didnt even get as much downloads as a Desktop Poo that I put together in 5 minutes did, despite being some big epic length platformer, because TDC was fairly active with that compo back in the winter holidays
its nice to see TDC pick up after how dead it was acting. Must be all the compos
Good point, but the fact that you put "abandonware" in the title probably dropped the downloads to about a tenth, while a "demo" in the title would make it at about a quarter of full download potential.

Surely it's easy to give a someone with a bad game encouraging comments? Just tell them why their game is bad. Even if it's as simple as telling them to avoid the build in movement at all costs. Just a simple link to a helpful article or engine would be a huge help.
Moving from Built in to custom movement is the biggest step most clickers ever make.

1:1000? Where did you get that statistic? It'd be more like a 1 to 30,000 (or however many members there are)... =P
Discarded pizza boxes are an indispensable source of cheese.
Female gamers are one of the most rapidly growing segments in gaming. But then again, game making is totally another thing and obviously 99.9% boys stuff, no questions about that. But if TDC would like to get more girls to join, the best solution would be to open up a Vitalized/Java browser game section, which would feature e.g. small puzzle games and other casual content with some social elements.
At MJK Games forum, the Male to Female ratio is actually 1.8:1, so in every three members there are more than one female. Though the total number of members is only around 300 (had to wipe out 1000 accounts because of a forum provider change, yay).
Well, there was one time when it was around one in 10 klikers were female, guess it got a lot worse. I think some time like 4 years ago, you could get flamed for even mentioning "female klikers" just like the flammable word these days is "Construct" 1 in 200 is close if you want to count Roseweave, Tina Petersen, Adam, and a bunch of the other noobs who are hiding their gender. There's obviously a lot more female members but a lot of them are only posting links or comments.
Yeah, more girls are getting into games. I'd like to see a few of them get into making games though. Girls seem to go more into non-technical parts like webcomics and graphics.

I blame all of the increase on me downloading all of the top 50 games.
Don't aim for perfection- you'll miss the deadline

I'm finding the increase in activity just a little annoying... since I've got to update GOTW and pick out which ones are worthy :/
