Football is nothing more then getting extremely strong, and becoming an obstacle so that a few choice star players can achieve goals. Soccer is better because it actually requires skill. You wont hear a single football fan admit that though, because as far as they're concerned, as long as it takes hard work to get as strong as you need to be to play football, you have "skill".
And yes, football is not fun to watch. Honestly? I don't think sports in general are fun to watch. Startrek ftw.

Dude, that's an oversimplification of football. You do know that they could throw the ball over "obstacles" or run around them? Soccer does need skill though, but it's half luck. It's not like tennis or squash, which are 90% skill. Plenty of times a good team can lose to a bad one.

Personally I like watching american football, whereas I generally only watch international soccer matches. Both are fun to play, but rugby union is the best.
Z D : popularity has nothing to do with how good something is. westlife, spice girls, I could go on...
When I came in this thread I wasn't sure to expect it to be about football or football. Guess it was football. I too was sad that Favre was traded, but only mildly. I'm not a diehard football fan, but it's fun when you get to take your friends' season passes down to the front row at a Bengal's game, no matter how much they stink. I don't like watching any sport on TV, however.
Oh, and yes, that was an oversimplification of football. Both sports require skill, and you're never going to get the other person to see it your way. Let's keep it at that, shall we?
If soccer is so bad and rubbish and that why is it the most played ball sport the world over?
I personally don't like it (or any sport, really), but he has a point there
Ah dunt like it either.
But I do like Mario Strikers
But yea American Football is only mostly played in... America? I can imagine baseball has more players worldwide. Probably not more than cricket or rugby which has all them chaps in the west indies, india, australia and the likes.
Dr James : and Canada (slightly different rules) - go BC Lions!
Oldmanclayton : i'm not a bengals fan but they don't exctly stink. T.j. houshmandzadeh's the best wide receiver in the game imho.
Hayo : agreed, I'd rather play than watch just about any sport (maybe not boxing or anything else where I'm going to get beaten to a pulp on a daily basis).
Give them a chance, and I'm sure most people will find something to appreciate about all forms of football.
The main criticism people seem to have of NFL football is that it's stop-start. However, what action there is, is always intense. Most of the time in soccer, you have about 3 players (at most) moving at more than a gentle stroll - the guy with the ball, and maybe a couple of others making forward runs. And how often do see defenders just passing the ball aimlessly between each other and the keeper. In NFL you CANNOT play for a draw. Also, there's more variety (for want of a better word). Soccer players, with the exception of the keepers, are all basically doing the same thing. Many of the different positions in NFL require completely different skills, and I love that - any player on the field can make a spectacular play (eg. my favourite player to watch is steelers *strong safety* troy polamalu).
Rugby union is great beacuse it has the intensity and physical play of NFL without the constant stopping. I'd argue that it requires by far the most physical fitness (i used to play all three, and found rugby easily the most exhausting). The downside, is that there's nothing in a rugby match that's nearly as spectacular as a 90-yard touchdown pass.
Never played aussie rules. No-ones defending that I see?
I door Berleeve that There are American football leagues in the UK... Can't remember what it's called though. The Bengals don't exactly stink, but they've been better. TJ Hooshman-zuhdeh is indeed a good player, (I don't know how with all that hair ) but it doesn't exactly make up for it. We've changed the Who-dey to say, "Who-dey tink a gonna beat dem bengals... Eeeever'body!" And on the bright side, we have the coolest team name and uniforms.
