Football is nothing more then getting extremely strong, and becoming an obstacle so that a few choice star players can achieve goals. Soccer is better because it actually requires skill. You wont hear a single football fan admit that though, because as far as they're concerned, as long as it takes hard work to get as strong as you need to be to play football, you have "skill".
And yes, football is not fun to watch. Honestly? I don't think sports in general are fun to watch. Startrek ftw.

Dude, that's an oversimplification of football. You do know that they could throw the ball over "obstacles" or run around them? Soccer does need skill though, but it's half luck. It's not like tennis or squash, which are 90% skill. Plenty of times a good team can lose to a bad one.

Personally I like watching american football, whereas I generally only watch international soccer matches. Both are fun to play, but rugby union is the best.
Z D : popularity has nothing to do with how good something is. westlife, spice girls, I could go on...
When I came in this thread I wasn't sure to expect it to be about football or football. Guess it was football. I too was sad that Favre was traded, but only mildly. I'm not a diehard football fan, but it's fun when you get to take your friends' season passes down to the front row at a Bengal's game, no matter how much they stink. I don't like watching any sport on TV, however.
Oh, and yes, that was an oversimplification of football. Both sports require skill, and you're never going to get the other person to see it your way. Let's keep it at that, shall we?
If soccer is so bad and rubbish and that why is it the most played ball sport the world over?
I personally don't like it (or any sport, really), but he has a point there
Ah dunt like it either.
But I do like Mario Strikers
But yea American Football is only mostly played in... America? I can imagine baseball has more players worldwide. Probably not more than cricket or rugby which has all them chaps in the west indies, india, australia and the likes.
Dr James : and Canada (slightly different rules) - go BC Lions!
Oldmanclayton : i'm not a bengals fan but they don't exctly stink. T.j. houshmandzadeh's the best wide receiver in the game imho.
Hayo : agreed, I'd rather play than watch just about any sport (maybe not boxing or anything else where I'm going to get beaten to a pulp on a daily basis).
Give them a chance, and I'm sure most people will find something to appreciate about all forms of football.
The main criticism people seem to have of NFL football is that it's stop-start. However, what action there is, is always intense. Most of the time in soccer, you have about 3 players (at most) moving at more than a gentle stroll - the guy with the ball, and maybe a couple of others making forward runs. And how often do see defenders just passing the ball aimlessly between each other and the keeper. In NFL you CANNOT play for a draw. Also, there's more variety (for want of a better word). Soccer players, with the exception of the keepers, are all basically doing the same thing. Many of the different positions in NFL require completely different skills, and I love that - any player on the field can make a spectacular play (eg. my favourite player to watch is steelers *strong safety* troy polamalu).
Rugby union is great beacuse it has the intensity and physical play of NFL without the constant stopping. I'd argue that it requires by far the most physical fitness (i used to play all three, and found rugby easily the most exhausting). The downside, is that there's nothing in a rugby match that's nearly as spectacular as a 90-yard touchdown pass.
Never played aussie rules. No-ones defending that I see?
I door Berleeve that There are American football leagues in the UK... Can't remember what it's called though. The Bengals don't exactly stink, but they've been better. TJ Hooshman-zuhdeh is indeed a good player, (I don't know how with all that hair ) but it doesn't exactly make up for it. We've changed the Who-dey to say, "Who-dey tink a gonna beat dem bengals... Eeeever'body!" And on the bright side, we have the coolest team name and uniforms.
Of course Football (Soccer) requires skill. What an incredibly ignorant thing to say. You need a good head on your shoulders too so you can outwit you opponents.
Sports are one of life's greatest pleasures, and association football is probably the best (not because of the game per se, but the atmosphere, and the actual scale - it's good to know your game is followed worldwide by billions of people. It's like a worldwide language).
American Football is a game I've tried to watch, but I've never really got to grips with the rules. I guess it's a bit like cricket to an American; all the crowd seem to be enjoying it, but you can't figure out why. Baseball; now there's different matter! I can't believe baseball's not taken off in most parts of the world.
It's big in Japan (pun intended), and Taiwan. It's not massive in China though, and could never touch cricket in the western Asian countries (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh).
Baseball has a few dedicated countries, the US obviously, Spanish-speaking Carribean countries, Venezuela, Mexico, etc. And then there's Japan and that. But outside of those countries it's barely played, which is a shame. I'd like for there to be small but sizeable enclaves of baseball all through the world.
Did you know that the GB baseball team qualified for the final qualifying round in the Beijing Olympics, but the Olympic Committee people declined to fund it? We were replaced by Germany. Absolutely outrageous decision. I could've been sat at home watching Britain play the US at baseball and get mullered. It would have been immense.
Baseball is a good sport, just like basketball. I wouldn't mind seeing baseball reach the rest of the world. But I think watching soccer provides more of an adrenaline rush, because it's mostly 20 minutes of boredom, followed by 1 lucky/well-played goal. And in most games, there are around 20 exciting moments in between where spectators would perk up expecting a goal.
I wrote an article on game design based on why football is so addictive, but never uploaded it

I like both sports, but I have never played them other than in school...
I found that people (unprofessional) generally get more damaged in american football (though very satisfying at the moment for me ) so I guess I perfer Soccer...
Watching sport on TV is fun, but I rather spend my time making creative things, like painting and coding...
Football (Soccer) is bad if you're fat or are uncoordinated.
American Football is bad if you don't like being snapped by a bunch of large sweaty men.
Rugby Union is good for fatties, fasties, people who like to snap others and people who don't.
Its like a fantastic combination of the two, and is superior in everyway
And it's not "European football", it's everywhere-else-but-the-US football.
Edited by the Author.
Association football. Though I've just given up and called it soccer so Americans don't get confused.

He said European football because to us, it's mostly europeans that enjoy it. It's the same with you thinking that only America has American football, when in fact other countries do.
So great you have both sports it's a good thing you can choose which one to support.
There's no point on arguing which one is the best because both are diferent, it's like comparing shit and piss for gods sake.
But the fact is that no other countries are good at American Football but America. It's a completely one-nation sport, unlike other American sports like baseball, basketball, ice hockey. There's a reason why gridiron has never been considered for the Olympics...
I knew basketball and ice hockey was big in other countries, but where else is baseball popular? I remember our PE teacher introduced it to us in the final year at school and i thought it was quite fun, though not too radical from rounders (which i also enjoyed)
Baseball is big in Japan and South Korea. There are a handful of players from both in the major leagues, including some genuine superstars like Ichiro Suzuki.
And obviously Canada, but you probably count that as america (my apologies to any Canadians, cos I know that pisses them off).
Also, in the caribbean? (I might be in the wrong ocean here - my geography isn't great). Places like Dominican Republic etc anyway.
Anyway, for those who ARE interested in *american* football, we've just had the draft in my fantasy game (on nhl.com), and I picked up the following;
QB J.Cutler (DEN) - got him late, but he may be ok?
RB J.Jones (SEA) - seahawks have lost deion branch and bobby engram so he'll get lots of opportunities I hope
RB W.Parker (PIT) - he's great, and gonna get more carries near the endzone this season
WR H.Ward (PIT) - hmmm. not sure
WR N.Burleson (SEA) - same as J.jones
WR T.J.Houshmanzadeh (CIN) - he's awesome (i still got mocked for taking him with my first pick though)
TE T.Heap (BAL) - don't really care about TEs much as they never earn you many points (unless they're antonio gates)
K P.Dawson (CLE) - as above
DF Steelers Defense (PIT) - purely because troy polamalu plays for them
Megaman - His buster will do wonder.
Kirby - A bit gay, but his ability to swallow other players makes him strong.
Batman - Strong and cunning.
Captain America - Humanity in its strongest form, and awesome little wings on his suit. The shield can come in handy.
Cloud (FF7) - He looks weak, but hey, look at what he can carry with those thin little arms, he is like an ant or tentacle monster or something.
Optimus Prime - I'd like to see someone stand in his way, in any of his forms.
Kunio (River city Ransom) - Master at beating people up.
Former President Putin - Noone knows what he is thinking, and he knows karate, and he is russian.
Mr. Gimmick - Supreme being!
reserves:
Sponge Bob, some random guy and a cucumber.

Like the Australian Football League, except that's only like 2 states...
haha i was just listening to frank calliendo. brilliant impression stand up comic. does near flawless impressions of john madden. uncluding brett favre bits.
"breeeett. i wrote you a poowem."
"half of that grass is fake and half of that grass is real. but brett favre is aLLLLLL real."
Frank Caliendo is hilarious. "If he takes the ball INTO the end one, that's gonna be-- uhbeduh, that's gonna be--, uhbeduh that's gonna be a touchdown."
I've actually heard John Madden say things like, "He's either going to play really well today, really bad today, or somehwere in between" and "Well, the thing is, his shoulder was dislocated. And when you have a shoulder dislocation, what it is is your shoulder is dislocated, and that's what a shoulder dislocation is." No kidding.
And then the quote we made up, "Brett Favre could swallow a football, and fart touchdowns."
"great football is about great football. if you have great football PLAYERS playin great football thats the best kinda football to play, but if you have regular players playin great football, thats just regular great football not great great football, you wanna see GREAT great football, an-an-and thats what thats all about"
