I have an idea...
Someone said that before, you can vote, then delete your comment so it makes it anonymous and your vote still counts...
Why not just make it so if you delete your comment your vote doesn't count anymore?
So if you REALLY want to ruin a game's rating, all the other members can see you do it.
Admins maybe cannot delete the comments, but everyone else would know who are the people doing this, and pay no more attention to them until they get bored.

Also, if you see the same person doing it multiple times, and with no reason at all, he could maybe get a warning that he is being unfair, and/or ask him to give a better description of why he only rated 0/5.

I don't know how well this is going to work, or even if it would work at all, but this is just an idea.
I thought it was a pretty good one too.

Your just jealous that you're not as awesome as me.

Nah, you'd have to be pretty darn detailed to get away with GOTW cheating these days. Security there's pretty tight; the nature of fake accounts make them quite easy to detect

He said it happens all the time, that doesn't mean they get away with it. Ive seen it happen 3 or 4 times in the past few months.

I guess this would actually belong in the voting system thread, but since these are all related a little-

Here's an idea, based on what some of the members (including myself) kind of do already- If I see a game that's not very good, I simply don't rate it. If I really like a game, I'll rate it 4 or 5 stars to show others that I think it's a quality product. Of course that wouldn't really a good thing for everyone to do now because then all games would just be rated between 4 and 5 stars. But my point is that many members don't want to down-vote a game because each vote can have a huge impact on a games total score, since the top ten list is mostly between 4.5 and 5. That means even giving a game a 3 or 4 can hurl a game downwards, which can also put unfair pressure on a person who wants to give an honest vote.

So what about a voting system like the favorite system (I know that's already been mentioned), but you can give it 1-3 stars that would contribute to a total star count. So even if someone gives a game 1 star, that 1 star still ADDS to the games star pool, without taking anything away from it's total score. It would be a way of recommending it to different degrees IF you want to recommend it. For those who don't like it, they don't have to give it any stars at all, which means they will simply not add to it's star count. This would also strike a good balance between popularity and quality. So a game downloaded by 100 people with all of them giving it 2 stars would still be able to beat a game downloaded by 5 people who all gave it 3 stars.

This would completely take away troll powers from anyone who wants to use the voting system as a way to punish a game or an author, and it wouldn't require any policing by admins. It would also completely take pressure off of people doing the voting, and it would make each and every vote be appreciated by the author (because even a 1-star vote would help the total score a little).

Oh yeah, and about fake accounts and such- why not just have the site require a certain number of DC points before they can vote on anything? That way they would have to make some posts first at least. It wouldn't be perfect, but at least it would make it a lot harder to make a fake account to do anything with.

Shroom - same problem as in the olde days. The new games will disappear under the star power of all the old games. It's not entirely a bad idea, though. Would be nice because it'll make TDC a bit more positive. I rather miss the positive trolls like NationalLiberal.

Well I guess there isn't a perfect solution. It just seems like there should be a way to rank games by how many people recommend it, and to what degree they recommend it. I guess in a nutshell the problem now is that even giving a game 4-stars (a very high score!) will usually in fact LOWER a games total score. The only way to truly recommend a game now is to give it 5-stars.

But concerning GOTW cheating, it really happens a lot. Seems like admins just look at identical IP's, but people have proxies.
I even left a team (one that will remain nameless) partly bacause of it. Not letting brand-new accounts vote would help a bit.

I think.

It would still prevent people registering an account just to vote their game for GOTW

Identical IPs are easy to spot. I certainly look at other things than just IP, not sure about the other admins. Being a professional troll outside of TDC, I find that part the most enjoyable about doing GOTW

It's hopeless to cheat sometimes, though. Some games win by a 10 vote margin, making that many fake accounts is easy to spot and the wins by narrow margins are usually closely examined. The only problem is finding the difference between real, quiet people and the fake ones. That Va1entine guy really confused me
