I sent a DC Mail to the admin but the my connection went screwy and i'm not sure if he got it or not so:

I think THE best way to reduce troll account being made on this site is to restrict new members from making ratings and reviews for at least 1 or 2 days.

If they have to wait each time they want to troll then they wouldn't even bother.

Does anyone agree this would be a good idea?

That doesn't prevent account creation though. They can still spam the forums as they wish.

So someone makes a troll account, waits a week, then bombards a bunch of games with zeros before it's banned.

No intention to sound rude, but I highly doubt it would work.

Trollers are very impatient people, i know you don't mean to be rude.

And you weren't being rude anyway... but i still think its worth a shot.

You could make it so accounts with no activity get deleted, but there is a restriction on specific uses.

Really, just about any efforts to stop trolling by changing the system will be defeated. People can evolve past and defeat any system you make.

You can stop trolling by making an environment where trolling can't survive.

The best way to reduce troll accounts would be to disable account creation.

Of course, that would also mean no new members.

A compromise would be to allow new members only by invite from existing members. If the new member misbehaves, the inviting member gets a warning for it.

Do we really want a closed system like that though?

Yeah, that's what I think too.

The best way of dealing with trolls is ignoring them. Then they get bored.

Actually, I have an idea as well. If you download a game, you are given the option to initially Rate AND Review. If you do not, neither will be given. Also, there should be a anonymous group of review personell, to scan for bogus reviews. If you try to download, or review another game, you will be reminded of the last game you downloaded. You are told you cannot review another game until you have reviewed the one your assumed to be currently playing. If you decide to not review, then no rating or review will be given. In other words, you must rate, and review at the same time.

Why can't we do a system that gives more voting power to people who have a higher reputation. Reputation could be judged by time here, and valid content submitted. (If your content such as games, articles, and so on... receive good feedback, your reputation goes up.)

Someone said this once before in another thread I believe, but I have a twist to it:

The first part is as it always was, allow people to give thumbs up or thumbs down to a rating.
This part, I'm not sure was in the original. When a rating is voted down, its effect on the overall rating of the game is lessened, and when voted up, it gains effectiveness. You can only upgrade one rating equal to or above yours(so that games don't suddenly shoot up in rating, for nega-trolls (those who overrate instead of underrate) and if you change your mind it is reflected in upgrading a higher score) and you can only downgrade ratings below yours, and only one of each rating. When you downgrade a rating, any posts by you (or the first post by you) will tell everyone what you upgraded or downgraded (I figure that showing who's you up and downgraded would be too memory-hogging)

E.g.: Someone votes a 4 on a game.
They may downgrade ratings of 3, 2, or 1.
They may only downgrade one 3 rating, one 2 rating, and one 1 rating.
They may upgrade one 4 or one 5 rating.
They may only upgrade one 4 or one 5.
If you drop a 2 and a 1, and raise a 4, any post you make will show in the corner a thumbs up and thumbs down with a 2 and 1 next to the thumbs down and a 4 next to the thumbs up.

If someone hates this idea, likes this idea, or wants to change it, or ignore it, go ahead.

Which is why you've been here for 3 years and you're still a no it all "douche". You're absolutely right. That's why I said reputation would be more bias towards your content and how it fairs based upon other peoples ratings.

The idea isn't to judge them ideal for rating, the idea is to merely take abused power away from troll accounts. If we were truly looking for the most accurate and ideal people to rate, we'd hire a crack team of critiques.

Trolls enjoy finding a way to overcome whatever methods have been used to stop them. They're usually the stupid kids or script kiddies who go, "If you yell at me to do my homework, I'm not going to do it!" Just ignore them. They give the TDC admins something to shoot at

I've said it a coupla times before, but I think Bodgahs idea isn't that bad. As mentioned it won't stop trolling, but it will make GOTW cheating a lot harder. You don't even have to make this time-based. Let's say an account has to be validated by an admin before it can do anything apart from posting? A new member is added to the "validation list", admins monitor his actions on the boards and if he doesn't seem to be a moron he gets his validation and is allowed to vote, rate, rant and rave.

Of course this is some extra work for the admins but it would stop a lot of the casual trolls and would make the game of creating good fake accounts a lot more fun.

(copied from a forum I'm on)

- new users have to wait a week before voting in GOTW, before posting a project
- new users have to wait X amount of time before being able to post on the General and Misc boards.

-email verification. 1 or 2 accounts per IP. Banned IP=no account.

IP bans doesn't work. All you have to do is find a proxy and then you have a new IP. I thought we had e-mail verification already? (it sends you the password to your mail, which you need to log in) Still, it doesn't help either as it's easy to just sign up a new mail.

And waiting before being able to post... Well, it might turn new members away from the site. Which IMO is worse than a few troll accounts.

Seriously, do you think the admins don't have lives outside TDC? Besides, a person could register a fake account, have the admin interview, answer the questions right, get on TDC, then have a trolling time.

Conclusion: Not only have we not solved the problem, we've also wasted some of an admin's time.

Sounds like some people here are all for fake accounts

The system works wonders on the site I stole the idea from. They have a politics and sales forum that requires the user reach 500 posts or have been a member of the site for 6 months. TDC is a much smaller place with less active topics so 500 posts would be much too many.

why not welcome everyone with open arms then just disable those functions for those found cheating or abusing the website.

Fake accounts have always been a part of TDC. Which is not necessarily a good thing I dunno, I think this is as quiet as TDC has ever been. Maybe later after it reaches its peak again. GOTW cheating is still not really much of a problem, since the admins do detect and punish it rather harshly. Although, there seems to be a flaw which I won't mention

The only sure fire way to stop it is this:

1. Delete all existing accounts
2. Request any person making a new account to provide 10 types of ID
3. Shoot Trollers on site, or anyone failing to produce 10 types of ID

That's OK. I'm not sure myself. Troll hunting is fun, though

I have an idea...
Someone said that before, you can vote, then delete your comment so it makes it anonymous and your vote still counts...
Why not just make it so if you delete your comment your vote doesn't count anymore?
So if you REALLY want to ruin a game's rating, all the other members can see you do it.
Admins maybe cannot delete the comments, but everyone else would know who are the people doing this, and pay no more attention to them until they get bored.

Also, if you see the same person doing it multiple times, and with no reason at all, he could maybe get a warning that he is being unfair, and/or ask him to give a better description of why he only rated 0/5.

I don't know how well this is going to work, or even if it would work at all, but this is just an idea.
I thought it was a pretty good one too.

Your just jealous that you're not as awesome as me.

Nah, you'd have to be pretty darn detailed to get away with GOTW cheating these days. Security there's pretty tight; the nature of fake accounts make them quite easy to detect

I guess this would actually belong in the voting system thread, but since these are all related a little-

Here's an idea, based on what some of the members (including myself) kind of do already- If I see a game that's not very good, I simply don't rate it. If I really like a game, I'll rate it 4 or 5 stars to show others that I think it's a quality product. Of course that wouldn't really a good thing for everyone to do now because then all games would just be rated between 4 and 5 stars. But my point is that many members don't want to down-vote a game because each vote can have a huge impact on a games total score, since the top ten list is mostly between 4.5 and 5. That means even giving a game a 3 or 4 can hurl a game downwards, which can also put unfair pressure on a person who wants to give an honest vote.

So what about a voting system like the favorite system (I know that's already been mentioned), but you can give it 1-3 stars that would contribute to a total star count. So even if someone gives a game 1 star, that 1 star still ADDS to the games star pool, without taking anything away from it's total score. It would be a way of recommending it to different degrees IF you want to recommend it. For those who don't like it, they don't have to give it any stars at all, which means they will simply not add to it's star count. This would also strike a good balance between popularity and quality. So a game downloaded by 100 people with all of them giving it 2 stars would still be able to beat a game downloaded by 5 people who all gave it 3 stars.

This would completely take away troll powers from anyone who wants to use the voting system as a way to punish a game or an author, and it wouldn't require any policing by admins. It would also completely take pressure off of people doing the voting, and it would make each and every vote be appreciated by the author (because even a 1-star vote would help the total score a little).

Oh yeah, and about fake accounts and such- why not just have the site require a certain number of DC points before they can vote on anything? That way they would have to make some posts first at least. It wouldn't be perfect, but at least it would make it a lot harder to make a fake account to do anything with.

Shroom - same problem as in the olde days. The new games will disappear under the star power of all the old games. It's not entirely a bad idea, though. Would be nice because it'll make TDC a bit more positive. I rather miss the positive trolls like NationalLiberal.

Well I guess there isn't a perfect solution. It just seems like there should be a way to rank games by how many people recommend it, and to what degree they recommend it. I guess in a nutshell the problem now is that even giving a game 4-stars (a very high score!) will usually in fact LOWER a games total score. The only way to truly recommend a game now is to give it 5-stars.

But concerning GOTW cheating, it really happens a lot. Seems like admins just look at identical IP's, but people have proxies.
I even left a team (one that will remain nameless) partly bacause of it. Not letting brand-new accounts vote would help a bit.

I think.

Identical IPs are easy to spot. I certainly look at other things than just IP, not sure about the other admins. Being a professional troll outside of TDC, I find that part the most enjoyable about doing GOTW

It's hopeless to cheat sometimes, though. Some games win by a 10 vote margin, making that many fake accounts is easy to spot and the wins by narrow margins are usually closely examined. The only problem is finding the difference between real, quiet people and the fake ones. That Va1entine guy really confused me

Surely this argument is mainly about game of the week? Why not just have it that only approved members can vote the game of the week pole? I'm pretty sure that would resolve this issue & Club could build a page where you could apply and partisapate in the pole!

Email from Muz:
Heh, someone said you were a troll because you were giving very good ratings to a lot of games without commenting much. I almost deleted you from reflex, but didn't

I'm so glad you didn't delete me that could of been bad! I'm not very academic i'm more practical/visual which i guess is why i just usually grade a game and leave one or two comments here and there. Thanks you for clearing that matter up though Muz!
