My favorite SNES game ever was and is King of Dragons. It is a style that I hope to emulate and improve upon in my future games.
It's of the beatemup genre but it's NOT of the "mash the buttons until you ruin your keyboard/controller style"
King of Dragons is the most balanced and time tested fun game that I've ever played. The replay value is fantastic. You get to choose from 4 different characters, and they each have their own style. There's an elf, wizard, warrior, and a cleric. Cleric and Warrior get shields that you can block with while the wizard and elf have range attacks. But of all that is great about this game, it amazes me at how it's tough to beat the game even on easy, yet if you are incredibly good and maybe a little lucky, it is quite possible to complete the entire game on the highest difficulty without ever getting hit. Now that's balance!
There's very few games out there with this kind of quality.

Your Turn! Post your favorite Snes game and Why you like it so much.

Too many to narrow down! O_O No particular order:

Goof Troop was pretty high on my list. (Awesome game, I recommend it)
B.O.B. - One of my firsts. Neat atmosphere
Star Fox - Given
Super Mario All Stars - Buncha mario classics
SMW - Given
Super Mario kart - Given
MMX - Given
Cold Shadow - Also had a nice atmosphere. Something a little unusual.

I could go on... but I can't remember them all. I just set the SNES up downstairs, I need to dust off the ol' controllers and play again!

Back then, I didn't own a snes. I don't know why, but my parents bought me a TurboGFX16 instead . It was probably cheaper

When I went to my older brother's house though, I only played MegamanX1to3, even if he owned mario kart and a couple of other good games.

I just wanted to beat those three, but I couldn't at that age. Even today, MMX1 remains my favorite snes game.

I never owned a SNES (Amiga child ) but I used to love playing through Mario World at a mates house. Bought Link to the Past, Yoshis Island and Mario World on GBA and Virtual Console since then.

But Mario World gets my vote. Just flat out the best Mario title ever... Except for maybe Mario 3 or Galaxy.

Yea ... Super Mario World comes in a close second to King of Dragons imho ... Third on my list fo Snes would probably be Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. Street Fighter 2: Turbo could be 4th.

I heard that Super Mario RPG is good, but I still have never played it.

Edit: wait no .. Super Mario Kart 4th ... then SF2: Turbo 5th
LoL! .. the list just keeps getting bigger.

I didn't know what a video game was until my dad's former manager gave us an old beat up SNES. This was probably around '99. I always thought the kids at school were talking about a Weebles space station toy when they said "Playstation." It was about two years later I found TGF1 and now I'm thinking about developing vidier games for a living!

Anyway, that's why the SNES holds such a special place in my heart.

Funny little story... (stop me if I've told you, I think I may have) we stopped by an old video store a few years back on a long haul to Indiana. They were selling off their stock of SNES games for $5 each, and we were each allowed to buy one with our own money. I got All Stars, sis got Looney Toons B-ball (Another AWESOME game) and my brother couldn't decide between MMX and MMX3. Logically he chose the first one. We found out later that MMX3 is worth at least $50 in most cases.

I shall return later today when I have refreshed my memory of which games I own.

I owned a Megadrive and didn't really play many Snes games until I discovered the wonders of Emulation. I did play a lot of Mortal Kombat 2 round a friends house one night. Just couldn't beat the last boss.

I actually quite liked playing Mario paint. Mainly for the music composer section. The three main Final Fantasy games are pretty good. Oh and I guess chrono trigger too since i actually own that on my Ds now.
I had a lot of fun playing though Kirby's dreamland 3. I really liked super mariokart for a while too.

Does Yoshi's island count if i own it on my GBA?

I can't decide.

No. They're similar but different enough that you've got to play both. I own both of them, also another one on my favorite list. In fact, I was "boo-bah-bah-doo"'ing the title theme this morning.

You have to play an SNES with an SNES controller to get the full awesomeness, emulation is garbage compared to the real thing.

I know whats you means. I much prefer playing a classic system to its emulated twin. I guess it depends on what you first played it on too... The GBA was the first system which I played SNES classics on so for me that feels like the original version. If that makes any sense

SNES, meh just old BLAH. I like some of the games but 16 bit is way over rated here. some "artists" here seem to pretend we still live in 1992 and make BLAH 16 bit looking games like back then they WANTED to the gfx to look that BLAH. If they had had 3d chips back then they would have used them not 320x240 games with only 16 colours. Games started to be cool around the time the Xbox came around for me. I know mmf can't do 3d but you can at least enchant the gfx with photoshop.

SNES had some flat-out good art. People still use that style today, even with 360 and PS3 power. Have you played any SNES games? Gameplay is just as important as good graphics, and both are delivered in a lot of games.

And the one controller with colorful convex buttons and a convex back that was a clone of the Japanese controller (rather than the blechola purple one we got) was so comfortable. Put a joystick on that thing in some ergonomically pleasing fashion and I'd take it back!

I think this is a harsh statement against pixel art, if you think the only good graphics were when the Xbox came out then this community of majority pixel or vector pushing game makers doesn't seem to be your place.

It's a good quality to aspire to, but not many clickers are capable of rendering quality 3D models into 2D sprites.

I have the compact Jr. one. The second US one that looked like the Super Famicom. I think the European one already looked like that from the beginning though.

This one: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:SuperFamicom_jr.jpg Only the button and switch are purple and the logo is different.

The first one we had was the original, but my brother made me give that to his friend because his friend's SNES' RF port was jiggly. :| I should have never let him bully me into giving it away... (This one: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Super_Nintendo_Entertainment_System-USA.jpg ) Oh well, all is not lost because while the original was only partially mine, the second one was bought with my money, so it's 100% under my control. >:}

The Jr. is actually a pretty cool looking little machine.

I never owned one myself. I did have a Sega Master System 2... Still do in fact, I can see it from here.
However through the wonderful legal no-man's land that is the world of emulators, I have to say Secret of Mana is way up there. Co-op gameplay is always a good idea.

amiga, snes and megadrive were all equals (in my opinion) although I personally loved the Amiga most.. simply because I had such a huge collection of games on it.

But yea, it was the golden age of gaming for me also.

I think of the SNES-N64 days as the golden age. SNES had awesome 2D games and introduced me to video games, and on the rare occasion I went to someone's house who had an N64, it astounded me how awesome 3D was. I can remember thinking Donkey Kong 64, Mario Party 2, and SM64 were so amazing. And the redeads in OoT scaring me. The gamecube era was also very mysteriously alluring, I loved watching my friend play Wind Waker. Now since I have the systems it's still fun, but not nearly as unique and interesting. It's hard to explain.

16-bit = defo the golden age for gaming! I remember the excitement of all those "3D" games that started to appear on the Mega Drive and SNES (Virtua Racing, StarFox and Stunt Race FX), bringing in another milestone of gaming. It was at this point you felt as though gaming couldn't get any better, with the perfection of 2D and the introduction of 3D graphics.

Happy days

Wow! I'm glad so many people agree with me that it was the golden age of gaming! Even though it had an occasional 3d, I would still call it the peak of 2d games. BTW, I also really enjoyed Final Fantasy 6(aka 3), even though I was never a Final Fantasy fan. All of the Megaman X games were great. Anybody ever a fan of Secret of Mana? I loved that game! It's got a japanese sequel that's even more polished and well made called Seiken Densetsu 3. It's definitely worth your time to look for a good translated rom of it

And of course, I can't beleive I forgot this the first time around...I feel a little ashamed...

EarthBound! Earthbound still remains one of my favorite games of all time! The characters were so enjoyable and the plot was good, and extremely goofy at some points. How could you not laugh at the concept of Trout Yogurt? Boing! It was one of the few RPGs I felt like I could play through completely without wanting to play something else. Many games get sloppy towards the end. Earthbound doesn't! I've got so many fond memories of it, so much that, I'm even making a tribute to it.

us lot from the UK weren't so overwhelmed with Nintendo. I'm not sure if it's the same for the rest of europe but the Nes and Snes were both far too late to make a huge impact. I can think of about 2 people that owned a Snes and a Few that owned a Nes but way more that owned Master systems Megadrives. Although the Gameboy was epically popular, a fair few had Game gears.

I can't think of many people that owned Amigas although it was really popular here (i know no one that had an atari st though)

In the US video games and Nintendo are synonymous. Or at least they were. My mom and gramma call all video games nintendos and I'd never heard of an Amiga until I got internet. I knew what the master system was, but I still only know of one person who owned one.

Almost everyone here had a SNES, GB and Gamecube. I only knew 1 other person with a Mega Drive.
We all had Amiga's too. Ours was a 600, neighbours had a 500, 500+ and a 1200. Some had hard drives and extra floppy drives, think we had a memory expansion. But literally everyone had 1 flavour.

Not many had a NES and only 1 kid had a Game Gear.

Nowadays everyone has every console .

Well, I wasn't even aware of consoles when i was really young. I was quite happy with my dad's Amstrad cpc. Then one day my grandparents gave us their old Atari 2600. After being used to waiting up to 15 minutes for games to load from audio cassettes, instant loading cartridges were just amazing.
It turns out of of my friends from middle school used to own a zx Spectrum because one day he decided to give me some games. Obviously they didn't work on my Amstrad, lol.

I'm not that old, so my first video game experiences were playing games on SEGA Megadrive and Commander Keen on DOS, then I got a PlayStation.
I didn't own a SNES I was a Gameboy kid though, Gameboy, GBC, GBA, GBASP, NDS Lite.

I still have my first GB. Still have all my systems all sealed away . But I play all my GB games on my GBA SP.

They were all Mega Drive people down here in the West Midlands, but people soon bought SNES's towards the end of the 16 bit era. I never got one as i was a young SEGA fan-boy back then (idiot!), though like you lot no-one bought the Saturn or Dreamcast and everyone had the PSX (including me - that was when i dropped the fan-boy thing and chose the console on the games - shock/horror!!)

Does anyone have a Neogeo pocket color or B/W?
They were released the same day as the dreamcast in the UK but flopped really badly. I spotted them in GAME and some random shops and actually convinced a few friends to get one. They soon dropped to £30 and the games were £12 so i picked one up. In hindsight they're only a slight an improvement on gameboy colors but there are some fantastic games available for it.
You can't go wrong with Sonic pocket adventure, King of fighters r2 or Card fighters clash.

Lets see...
Contra 3
Breath of Fire 2
Zelda : LttP
All the MMX games
Yoshi's Island is the best Mario game for the SNES to me. I couldn't get into SMW.
Secret of Evermore
Super Metroid

Overall, I'd probably say that Evermore is my favorite. It's a strange choice (especially with my dislike of most Square games) but something about that game really struck me.

You'll probably love Secret of Mana then. It's a very similair game. Heck, it even uses some of the exact same graphics! The engine of Secret of Mana is pretty kind of a better Secret of Evermore engine.

I remember king of dragons being pretty darn easy . . . lol - was awesome though from what i remember =].

I have too many favorites to list but some include what others have said.

mmx 1 - I need to go try claim the world record time on this >>. I beat this game 10+ times one day when I was bored x_x.
Zelda - Link to the Past. Why people play OoT over this I will never know. OoT is the biggest overrated pile of horseshit ever. Not a bad game, but overrated as fuck.
super mario rpg <3
ff2/3 (US) <3. FF2 is so easy to pick up and play, ff3 is amazing in its own right.
secret of mana (wow this game got progressively better)
secret of evermore - some pretty tight environments in this, and mana.
star fox - n64 version is good, but has nothing on this one =D.
Terranigma!~ Wow this game had some amazing environments.
Tales of Phantasia - didn't play far, but its tales of!
Seiken Densetsu 3 looked pretty good. Legendary graphics
Killer Instinct <3
Theres prob a lot more that I can't think of atm.

Wash your mouth out young man, Harvest Moon SNES was rife with earthen beauty! The lighting alone was glorious. I agree with you completely on the other installments, mind, which have a markedly different style.

Erm. I don't disagree with that, flick your eyes back to my last post and you'll see I'm no fan of the more recent 2d HM visual stylings, either. And Secret of Mana is one of the most beautiful 2d games out there, I'm not sure 'even' is the right word! I must say that I'm personally as equally fond of HM SNES's look, though. When it comes to matters of taste, discussions on what is 'better' swiftly become irrelevant. Mana is certainly more sophisticated, but I struggle to think of many 16-bit era games that can rival its looks, and like any game I judge HM's art on its own merits anyway.

This is becoming weird, so last post from me on this, or I'll end up repeating myself in the hope it sinks in. As said in my last two posts: I like the look, it's got what I consider to be a nice aesthetic, I reckon the ingame daylight changes in particular are pretty awesome. Art is unprovable and subjective, technique is only half the story, and Secret Of Mana is irrelevant to HM SNES in that the former makes me like the latter no less. To help you understand, I'll use a closer example: Streetwise is not on a visual par with Braid, but it still has its own artistic merit and simplistic style; its own look, and better looking games out there don't undermine what you did achieve with it.

I hardly see any differance between the first two maybe the first has nicer colors. The third and fourth screen shots look a lot better imho much better use of colours. But the 3d harvest moons rule them all...

We're a decade too old for this Adam, sorry.

In other news: I forgot one! I've recently been playing the first Lufia game online with a friend via ZSNES, taking it in turns to have a go etc. With Skype on in the background, it's quite similar to that communal 'sitting on the sofa and playing through a game'. Micro Machines is good for that, too, as are most multiplayer games. If only Worms SNES weren't so much poorer than its PC counterpart.

Lol! The funny part is I sent you a rom with the sequel to it (Seiken Densetsu 3) a while back. Secret of Mana that they're refering too can be found on the virtual console though. I prefer Seiken Densetsu 3 though because it's more polished. But Secret of Mana devinitely had better boss fights, the ones of SD3 were just too stationairy, you never had to dodge them
But all of the newer Mana games literally suck. I'm not a harvest moon fan myself, I never had a reason to like the series, but if you were to compare ANY Mana game for DS to any Harvest Moon game for DS, Harvest Moon would win. If you figured in Dawn of Mana, Children of Mana, and Heroes of Mana into a Mana-Harvest Moon comparison Adam, the recently terrible Mana games would lose... If you just did the Goldy Oldies, then yeah, Mana would win.
That's just the terrible direction the series is headed in... Square's seemed really unsure witch to go with the series, I just hope for the best...

Earthbound is an awesome game. It's hilarious and exciting. Busy playing Mother 3's fan translation right now.

I like Super Mario RPG, the Donkey Kong Country games, Super Mario World, Yoshi's Island, Chrono Trigger, and some others I can't remember, I guess.

Lol! The funny part is I sent you a rom with the sequel to it (Seiken Densetsu 3) a while back.

Never got around to it. I don't bother illegally downloading ROM's unless I'm going to die if I don't play the game.

go for it! That game is amazing! It was almost released for GBA in America, but that kinda fell though for the US Just like Mother 3

One thing about the game is, one's you begin to love, you'll never get out of it! I have tons of memories of playing it when I was 7, and I still fondly remember it today.

Anyways, it was pretty fucen amazing. Pity the last boss(along with 99% of the game) is so easy, I beat it in maybe 2-3 seconds first try?

Was that a question? I know it was Megadrive/Genesis only. I was making a little joke.

You must have used the cheat code to get all those continues then. Try playing King of Dragons as it was meant to be played (WITHOUT THE CHEAT). Set it on highest difficulty and then try to beat it. It's the most balanced game handsdown. How many games can you beat without getting hit even once (on any difficulty setting), yet it's difficult enough that it's hard to even beat the game? That's why I love that game so much. It's how every game should be, but how very few games are.

Edit: btw, I own a SNES and King of Dragons game for it. Emulation is a poor substitute, but for those of you who have never heard of the game and don't know, at least you can see what game I'm talking about.

I take that as a direct insult .

I never use cheats on games. As a matter of fact, I've been strongly against it probably ever since I knew what cheats were. I was probably between the ages of 2 and 4 then.

I think I left the difficulty on default. I'll go download it or something (I think theres a copy at a game store here cheap, but I have no extra cash atm) and try it on the hardest difficulty sometime. It might actually be on my xbox so i'll go check that later when I get to my shop.
