Anyone excited? I'm looking forward to seeing what Microsoft and Sony bring out to showcase their motion controllers. Last year was the unveiling of Natal and Move, but this year they should be trying to prove their worth with proper games - not just mini games. A lot of great games have been released this year already but I'm still looking forward to The Last Guardian, the new 3D-DS and the new Zelda.
I have a PS3 too, but honestly I still play the Wii more. Last year I was disappointed with Nintendo's E3 showcase. Super Mario Galaxy 2 just looked like SMG1 plus Yoshi, and New SMB Wii didn't look great. Actually SMG2 seems to be great fun according to early reviews, and NSMB Wii turned out to be the most fun I've had with a multiplayer game for a long time. I'm not excited about Metroid Other M. After slogging through Metroid Prime 3 waiting for the moment it got interesting, I realised that Metroid games just aren't for me. As for Zelda, I know we'd all be happier if they broke the Zelda mould a little and added voice acting, orchestral music, etc etc; but even if they deliver another game like Twilight Princess I will buy it on day one and enjoy it immensely.
Yep! I actually wrote a thread the other day but forgot to post it:
I've kind of become an e3 nut these past two years. 2010's e3 is just a tad over a month away, and it's rumor time.
I think Microsoft will show off a new, slimmer 360, perhaps with Natal built in. A few small games, but one huge (non-fable 3) project to draw in players.
Nintendo will obviously be showing off the 3DS. I'm wondering if it's going to go all-out or if it will be a conservative offering, as the Wii was. I'm hoping for Zelda Wii, and I'd always take a AAA game like Star Fox or Kid Icarus to surprise me. Also a mere mention of the Wii's successor may be in the emergency backup cards.
I have no clue what Sony's going to do. They'll have a lot of Move stuff to show, but I don't have any zinger predictions. Is another revision to the slim out of the question?
Who's going to steal the show?
That video was amusing. Was he high or acting? He did a pretty good job if it was an act.
I agree about Microsoft's Natal showcase. I think Molyneux will have something for them to show off. Whether we'll ever get to play it is another question, though.
As for Playstation Move, I wasn't at all interested until I saw the videos.
It looks incredibly accurate (you can write your name in the air and it shows on the screen). Natal is technically mind-blowing but when I think realistically about what we'll be using it for, there isn't much scope beyond bouncing ball mini games unless you have some kind of input device in your hand at the same time. The Kevin Butler video is funny, sure, but he raises a good point about buttons (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w0puP8nrIU8 ) As much as I would feel uncomfortable seeing copycats Sony come out on top, Move does seem to be the best overall solution to motion control, and the closest to what the Wii could/should have been. Having said all that, I could be wrong, lawl! Looking forward to seeing the games anyway.
I'm excited, but I have a feeling it's going to be dominated by Natal/PS Move, both of which I'm not really interested in. I expect to see lots of "party" games based around those rather then full fledged games.
There are still games I'm excited about finding out more though:
PS3
- LittleBigPlanet 2
- Gran Turismo 5
- InFamous 2
- The Last Guardian
- F1 2010
PC (not sure if these are being shown though?)
- Knights of the Old Republic
- Crysis 2
- StarCraft 2
- Diablo 3
- Half Life 2 Episode 3 (very unlikely to be there )
Wii
- Super Mario Galaxy 2
- New Zelda
- Metroid Other M
360
- Gears of War 3
- Halo Reach
- Fable 3
I think I'm more excited about the PS3 and Wii games than anything - I really hope Nintendo announce a new Zelda, would also love to see another New Super Mario Bros game. I'm not a big fan of Gears, Halo or Fable - but I couldn't think of anything else for the 360 that might excite me. I expect to see a lot of Natal stuff from them.
Should be a good year - apparently a new PSP and DS are going to be revealed too, and I wouldn't be surprised if a 360 "slim" or something similar is announced to release with the Natal.
PS Move does look very cool indeed. I'm satisfied with Wii Motionplus (Zelda's gonna rock), but it's still fun to see. Natal looks underwhelming and a little tiring, but I'm interested to see what they make for it.
I keep telling myself not to get my hopes up, but I always fail. There's no way everything that I'd want to happen at e3 would happen, but I've still enjoyed the past couple anyway!
I'm a little apprehensive about the vitality sensor. The camps are split between expecting to be floored and predicting that not even Nintendo can come up with something awesome. It does seem rather weird to me.
I wonder how many new pieces of hardware will be introduced.
I really am glad that E3 came back to being more of what it was in the past (remember when it down-scaled for those couple of years not long ago??) and i am very excited to see what appears. I always used to love reading all about it in games magazines when i was a kid (remember Mean Machines magazine and MEGA, anyone?) and now love watching videos about it on sites like Gamespot, as well as reading about it in Edge, Games TM and on Gamecentral.
It's been way too long Flava. The PS2 games were pretty good but from one year to the next they hardly changed and got pretty stale (shame). I also miss the old PS1 games by Psygnosis - they were great. GP4 by Geoff Crammond was great too!
I remember Mean Machines!! Wasn't there a writer who legally changed his name to Radion Automatic? I was a Nintendo kid so I read Super Play and Total more.
You know, I'll still take an interest in what all of the 3 companies have to show, and I'll probably buy a lot of PS3 games over the coming year, but when it comes to things like E3 I'll always consider myself a supporter of Nintendo rather than just a consumer.
Sony and Microsoft will have the usual *surprise* announcements of sequels to 2009's most financially successful games as well as a lot of motion control pap. Ultimately, I think Natal and Move will have mediocre sales at best.
Nintendo will have Metroid: Other M in buckets since it was delayed. Also, the 3DS. Also, Zelda. Please?
Speaking of PSPs, I shall digress for a moment. Has anyone played Modnation racers for the PSP yet? I'm debating whether to pick it up (Would be my first PSP game since I traded an NES for it. Insert dust-gathering meme here) since it's apparently cut down a lot from the PS3 game, which I would pick up in a heartbeat if I had the system.
AaaAaAaAAaaannnd, back to e3. Zelda's going to be there. Miyamoto said to wait for e3 in a German interview, and recently someone ran into Reggie Fils-Aime waiting at the airport and talked with him about it.
Twisted Metal PS3 (likely)
Timesplitters 4 and/or Timesplitters 2/3 HD (maybe?)
Tekken 7 and/or Soulcalibur V (unlikely)
Starwars Battlefront 3 (cancelled but maybe?)
Armored Core 5 (umm...)
Kingdom Hearts 3 (maybe?)
Final Fantasy Versus 13 (probably)
LBP2 (YAY!)
The last gaurdian (likely)
ill be pissed if they announce a new psp because I'll be getting one for my birthday.
Games that shouldn't be there:
New Halo (really these are getting old.)
New Cod (sequel after sequel what'll they change this time?)
New zelda ds game (these get boring after a while)
New FF (finish what you started)

Tricky one, having owned the PS3 version I couldn't go with the game being cut down, it's an incredible racing game as far as customization goes, and I can't see the psp system allowing it to the extent the ps3 version does. It will sound typical me saying this, but Id honestly put the money you'd spend on the psp game aside in a fund for a ps3.
I used to be a complete Wii fanboy ( I think I used to laugh at Flava on msn for having a ps3 when they came out) but since buying a ps3 my Wii has gathered dust. I bought Monster Hunter a couple of months back and played it about 4 times. Upon comparing it to a game like Red Dead Redemption for the PS3, it begins to look like a pretty pathetic game
My brother got Little Big Planet on the PSP a few months back, and it's pretty much a case of what happened when the Sims went handheld, it's just a boring game that loses what made it great in the first place, can't imagine it being any different for Modnation
Hmm... That's what I was afraid of. Thanks for the input. I'll hold off then. Probably shouldn't buy another game console at the moment (been buying quite a few games recently as it is, and no time to play them!), but I will try to find someone with a PS3 to bother.

Yeah, I think of the Wii as the quick 10-minute game console and emulator (Homebrew) now, but the PS3 is for larger games. Still looking forward to Zelda, but I think the last game I really got into on the Wii was RE4.
By the way, Nintendo are going to be streaming their E3 show live. Nintendo never make a big deal about E3 (didn't they pull out for a while?) so it makes me think that they have something big planned.

Out of curiosity, has anyone ever done the opposite, i.e. buying a Wii and having thier PS3/XBox 360 gather dust? Can't say i know of this yet
Ahh.. the E3. I'm not really looking forward to it. It gives you all these great visualizations of what upcoming games there, but none of them really live up to half the hype. Natal looks promising, but from what the games industry has done so far, I'd expect it to be very disappointing
Disclaimer: Any sarcasm in my posts will not be mentioned as that would ruin the purpose. It is assumed that the reader is intelligent enough to tell the difference between what is sarcasm and what is not.

I have. Before, I used to play my PS3 all the time, though pretty much only for PS2 games. I have the first model, the one that can play PS2. However since buying FF13, I've gotten back into PS3 a little.
Speaking of which, I hope they talk a bit more about FInal Fantasy Versus 13, it looks and sounds cool!

Chh.... yeahhh..... about that... I'll be honest, I do hope this is just a concept design that's deep in concept design, because I'll be honest - as much as I love my Xbox 360, it would be quite sad to have this be the future of it. It's actually uglier than the Playstation 3 Slim was. And what a horrible name for the motion capture. Good thing I don't have much faith in the whole motion control in games anymore, or I might've been really crushed.
So the Microsoft conference finished a while ago, here is a round-up:
- Xbox 360 ’slim’ is official, ships this week
- ESPN coming to Xbox Live (US only)
- Kinect gets November 4th US release (no price - though some sites have it at $149)
- Halo Reach to have space combat
- Fable 3 coming 26 October
- A host of Kinect games coming (15 launch titles)
- Kinect hub, uses voice recognition
- First Metal Gear Solid: Rising gameplay
- Crytek/Microsoft Studios Partnership
- Call of Duty Add-ons to be first on Xbox for next 3 years
Best part for me was the MGS: Rising gameplay (though even that I was a little disappointed with). Pretty disappointed with everything else as I'm not into Halo, and Kinect just seemed gimmicky to me (at least with the games they showed).
EA conference starts in about 15 minutes, so hopefully they'll have some cool stuff to show
It was quite obvious from the beginning that they were having interference issues. Hope we see some footage of people playing offscreen, because that mix of TP and WW styles is awesome.
This DK game looks awesome.
Already Nintendo's presentation is better than Microsoft's.
Poor Miyamoto He must have been disappointed that he couldn't demonstrate it properly. Some journalists got to play it at the end and it looked smooth. I don't like the new graphics, but whatever, I'm sure it's a good game. They've nailed the 3DS launch though.

IGN's feed got choppy at the end and I missed some of the developers on board with developing for it.
Games I remember seeing..
Fifa 2011 (EA Sports)
Metal Gear Solid (Konami)
Batman (Warner Bros.)
Saints Row
Resident Evil
Kingdom Hearts
DJ Hero 3D
Street Fighter IV
Ninja Gaiden
Ridge Racer
Professor Layton
Kirby Epic Yarn looks awesome. I have a feeling Epic Mickey is going to be a flop, one of those games that has parts I love and parts I hate, or that could have been done better.
I hope the 3DS is released in nicer colours than the metalic teal, too >.>

Same. It didn't look that Epic to me. (Epic Mickey, that is. Epic Yarn looked pretty cool.)
Miyamoto had an all black one on the nintendo feed.

Kirby does look awesome. I've heard from a few people on Twitter (video game journos mainly) who played Epic Mickey, that it is an amazing game. I think it could be one of those hidden gems that nobody is expecting - I hope so anyway.
Am actually considering buying a Wii just for Donkey Kong alone (need money though..)
Sony conference coming up in about an 1 hour 30 minutes!
Even though it's not finished, Id say the Sony conference has been the most proffesional in terms of presentation, but Im not so fussed about the games shown. PS Move does look kinda nifty though
Sony's seemed to drag out. Wanted to see a PSP2, but it looks like they're just going to keep pushing the first one. I was also hoping against hope that there'd be a Sly 4.
Seems like the big guns in the 360 and PS3 keynotes were all shooters. Some are unique, but others I wouldn't have been able to tell apart.
Microsoft's was the cheesiest, but none of them were terrible.
Sony conference finished. I'd say Nintendo has been the best one of the lot, but closely followed by Sony - mainly because I look forward to pretty much all the games they showed. Glad they didn't focus entirely on Move too.
Got to say I was really impressed with Nintendo this year though
Things I loved from Sony's conference..
- Killzone 3 (because I loved Killzone 2)
- Portal 2
- inFamous 2
- Sorcery (looked like a pretty cool and unexpected Move game)
- Twisted Metal (always loved this game)
I think the thing that makes a conference good is the surprises - Nintendo had lots of surprises, Sony had a couple, and Microsoft didn't really have any as far as I recall. I'm still really glad Nintendo has stepped it up this year
I haven't checked out everything yet but I'm certainly interested in the Xbox360 Slim. Call me Mr Uninspired but I'm tired of having to send my 360 back for repairs after the RROD (three times all in all). And now its out of its warranty so if it happens again I'll just get a new one.
Yes, I quite like the style... If I were ever magically granted the power to make whatever game I wanted for consoles, that's pretty close to the art style I'd use.
I was pleased with how much new stuff Nintendo revealed. They jumped right into it!

Twisted Metal was awesome. They should sell that Sweet Tooth costume for halloween, it'd scare everyone! Oh yeah finally Kojima can actually release games for the DS, I'm so tired of Kojima and Square releasing everything on the psp. And Valkyrie Profile 2! Wow im suprised that there wasn't more focus on that. They should've put it on ps3 though.
Kinect and move are so lame. I mean seriously, what kind of games are you gonna release on those? Party games? The only cool thing is Sorcery, and a fighting game for Kinect would be cool too, but thats pretty much it.
Ummm....It's annoying that BattleTag is trying to be something innovative, but isn't it just laser tag? Congrats EA you now have two games that look almost exactly the same, Medal of Honor, and Battlefield; which both look like Call of Duty. Im so tired of uncreative people being uncreative. Plus Crytek not doing anything with Timesplitters yet, they won't even want to confirm it yet. Too unrealistic for them? Meh...Realistic is boring. The old republic looks great, they've finnally made a good star wars mmo. Galaxies was really bad. It was too open, and they didn't really explain what to do. I just got dropped off at Tattoine and they expected you to know everything. Plus the gameplay was bad.
How come Move was like half of the Sony Conference? I think we get it after like ten years that Playstation is a good platform, you say it every year. Killzone 3 looks ok, kinda like the last one. Man these shooters are so dull. At least Goldeneyes coming out. It better not be like Rouge Agent again, which was terrible. Zelda looks good, it was funny, but sad that the motions weren't working. Wii party will be a not buy, but it will sell 5 million+ copies anyways. LBP2 looks way awesomer than I thought, Can't wait! Call of Duty is also meh. It seems just the same again. Final Fantasy Xiv seems cool, except I haven't seen it in action, so the battle system better not suck. I probably forgot alot of them, just becuase they weren't that exciting, or were announced before e3, so they don't really matter.
They should make e3 closer to the release of these things. I mean more then half of these things is in Q4 2010 to Q2 2011+!

I'm hoping it'll be playable on the show floor, but it's not likely if they didn't announce a trailer during their presentation.
Thankfully the reports coming in about Zelda are positive. It didn't look 1:1 AT ALL when Miyamoto demonstrated it. I'm warming up to the art style now too. I just hope there's a left-handed option or I'm screwed.

It looked to me that they didn't calibrate MotionPlus right, and Craig Harris from IGN said that he had issues with motionplus automatically calibrating when it saw infrared sources when he played a certain game at his office. There were tons of reflective surfaces in the audience, so it makes sense. I'm sure it'll be great.
I thought I read somewhere that you could choose whether to be left or right handed. I'd better hope so too.
I saw a demo of Zelda on Kotaku I think, and the sword did seem to move 1:1 without any problems - worked way better than it did in the presentation anyway.
Haha, it's on Gametrailers as "Microsoft's E3 highlights". The more I see of Kinect the more I think it's going to fail. You have to remain standing to play the games? That's strictly party game territory right there.
Did you see the part in the Nintendo conference where they announced the developers for the 3DS? "Hideo Kojima!" {cheeeers}, "Level-5!" {cheeeers}, "THQ!" {laughter}
Nintendo had a couple of other laughable/cringeworthy moments too, (aside from Miyamoto shooting himself in the legs with arrows). After the Wii Party trailer was shown, ONE PERSON clapped.
"After the Wii Party trailer was shown, ONE PERSON clapped"
Lol! I noticed that. Also noticed some guy making Michael Jackson noises everytime the audience applauded.
Edit: Wait the MJ memorial service was held there last year! Love how where Michael Jackson's coffin was last year, there were now Wii stands with playable demos of Zelda

Looks like we may be in trouble.
"IGN: In past Zelda games, people noticed that Link was obviously left-handed. And I know that all the Zelda games are stand-alones -- but in this particular game, will there be a lefty option for left-handed people?
Aonuma: It's interesting because people say "all you have to do is switch it." But in reality, it's really hard. You have to change all the models -- you have to make two of everything. So really you're making two complete games, one left-handed version and one right-handed version. We just can't do that. For Twilight Princess, what we did was just create a mirror -- we flipped everything. And if that worked I guess we could do it that way, but again having to create two games is not something we want to do. We just hope that people will play it right-handed."
But on a better note:
"IGN: At last night's roundtable it was hinted and maybe even answered that you might have orchestral music like Super Mario Galaxy 2 has. Will Skyward Sword be fully orchestrated, or just part of it, or what?
Aonuma: This is actually something we've been talking about for quite a while. I've discussed with Mr. Miyamoto, "are we going to do orchestration?" and mulled it over for a while. We got here to E3 and still didn't have an answer, so last night in the roundtable when the question came up, Mr. Miyamoto just said "I guess we're going to have to." And I said "We can? We can do it, really?" But, to be honest, I haven't had the chance to sit with him and get the OK on that. So, to be honest, I don't know either. He might tell me he was just joking around later."
Originally Posted by OldManClayton "...but again having to create two games is not something we want to do. We just hope that people will play it right-handed."
I don't actually understand why they need to create a mirrored world if link is left-handed. I played Twilight Princess left-handed and honestly never noticed the difference, but with Skyward Sword it'll be much harder to do. meh.
I was really excited to see there was a trailer for a new X-Com game - then I watched it, and it's just another lame FPS.
It just doesn't make any sense. The original turn-based strategy games were hugely popular, received fantastic reviews (IGN's #1 pc game of all time), and were commercially successful.
The later spin-offs (including the FPS "X-Com: Enforcer") were nowhere near as popular, received generally negative reviews, and didn't sell.
So why, if you're going to resurrect the X-Com franchise, would you make another FPS?!
Simple, turn based strategy games such as Xcom were what was selling back in the day, now I can't imagine anything turn based being commercially successful (except for Civilization, but they are different games). FPSes in the other hand are generally profitable (if not the most selling genre). Enforcer was simply crap and released over 5 years after the series had it's peak.
TO be honest I'm curious about the new xcom game, but in the last trailer I saw it looked more like left4dead+team fortress2 mixed together than something actually inspired by the xcom series.
Rubbish. They didn't stop making proper X-Com games because they are no longer profitable - they stopped because of internal problems at Hasbro (which killed off X-Com:Genesis). A decent squad-level, turn-based strategy game like X-Com would still sell now if anyone made it. X-Com is still (as of 2009) rated as one of the best games ever made, and still has a huge following (as evidenced by the numerous fansites and fan-made clones). Plus, they'd have very little competition - whereas the market is completely flooded with FPSs.
If it's the realtime aspect they're worried about, then they could have an optional RTS system, as in Apoc.
Just remake X-Com 1 (possibly with some of the extra aliens/tech from X-Com 2) in quality 3D, and they'd have a hit. I guess the real problem is that it would take a lot longer and be more expensive to make than a FPS (which must be one of the cheapest and easiest genres to produce these days).
As for the new FPS, no FPS will ever be as good as the original X-Com, let alone as good as a modern remake could potentially be - but as FPSs go, it looks pretty decent. Nothing to do with X-Com though, apart from having aliens, and what FPS doesn't.

Yes, but that doesn't explain why no classic xcom game has been made since 1997. Two high profile publishers (atari and 2k) had the rights for the franchise but neither of them made a tb squad based xcom game. Even xcom apocalypse (1997) was considered a commercial flop and it was released at a time when there was still a good share of turn based strategy games in the market.

How many squad level turn based strategy games were released recently ? Sad truth, but there is a reason why they are so rare nowadays.

I never said the contrary, I love the classic xcom games myself.
The thing is, it's been almost 15 years since the last xcom game, and while the series still has a big following, that's definitely not enough to make a best seller. In 15 years the industry grew a huge lot, those xcom fans (like you and me) are a minority within the mainstream. Like I said, even over crowded the fps market is still going a huge lot stronger than the turn based strategy games market. What 2k is doing is actually a very smart move.
They took a well known franchise (to make it stand out above the other fpses and along the way captivate the curiosity of a few xcom fans)and put a studio with a reputation for great action games in charge. My prediction is that it will be a commercial and critical success, in spite of having very little in common with the original xcom games.

There are many remakes and games made by other companies that fit that description well. Also your perception of FPSes being cheaper to produce than turn based games is wrong. Just as an example, Call Of Duty Modern Warfare 2 cost around 50 millions to make and it was a relatively short game, in the other hand ufo:alien invasion ( a well known xcom 3d remake) cost 0$ to be made and was for the most part made by a single person.

You can't compare apples with oranges. Anyway I'm not expecting any classic Xcom saying this FPS is the best game in the XCom series. I'm a bit skeptical about the game as well (I mean what the hell were those things they were shooting at in the trailer ?) but I'm still curious to see how it will turn out.
I got a little bored with the Gran Turismo series (and how long is it now since the 4th game came out??), but the news on GT5 has got me so excited i may have to buy a PS3!
Car damage - finally (though i'll wait to see what they mean exactly by this since they promised this before!)
