Has anyone played the new sonic released for iphone, Wii and Xbox? I got it last night and love it.
Its meant to continue on from Sonic and Knuckles, keeping in its true style. Only problem is there seems to be only 4 stages!
Sonic 4 is actually more of a remake of some parts of Sonic 2 and is part 1 of an episodic release. Almost everyone who knows about Sonic, especially fans of the originals, are very well aware of it's release because it's Sega finally going back to what we've all wanted. While it's still moderately disappointing, it's important we show them that this is the path we all want Sonic to take.
I think the fans actually wanted the movement copies exactly the same as the original Megadrive/Genesis game engine. In that way Sega didn't really do what they wanted. I'm a little less critical of the movement although there are a lot of little changes that weren't really required. Uncurling from a roll, that open legged fall animation after having ran up a 90 degree ramp and instantly stopping when not holding a direction.
It's decent but not anywhere near as good as the original trilogy.
I'm unfortunetly one of those people who think the engine should be as close to the Genesis engine as possible, which means I'll probably never be truly happy with the future of the official Sonic, again.
I was all excited for Sonic 4. I bought Episode 1 and it was a breeze. So much so that I felt like it wasn't worth $15. The physics are horrible (not game-breaking, but really jarring while you're getting used to them) and the game is really short. That is, until you go back and get all the chaos emeralds. But it still isn't worth $15. I'd feel better having paid $10 than $15.

I did enjoy Sonic Rush on the DS though, as well as Sonic Advance 3
Yes, the homing attack is so cheap and ruins the fun. They say "you don't have to use it" but that doesn't mean given the opportunity you wont. They need to just take it out.
As they say... it's good but it's not right. The problem is they ruined some levels with the intergration of puzzles. I don't like the boss fights, they're a bit cheap, especially the auto-running sections near the end of the game.
It plays like Sonic, but the environments are utterly sterile and lifeless. Still worth a look-in.
Having come back here from a Sonic board, I remain convinced that the fanbase won't ever be pleased until Sega blank their memories and give them a copy of Sonic 2.

Actually, it hardly plays like Sonic, simply because of how it has no real acceleration upon stopping. You just stop. That and the homing movement completely ruined it for me.
Graphics could've been better, but I'm not going to pick on graphics. I want to focus on the most important part of a Sonic game first and foremost. The damn engine. Why can't Sega get it right? We have fans who can make a better sonic game then Sega.
I too am surprised no one posted the Sonic Fan Remix like Duncan did.
Sonic rush isn't all that great and I don't just mean because of the awful physics.
In all fairness... this was a good attempt at trying to recreate an obviously very difficult to create engine (compared to most platform engines), so you have to cut them a little slack here.
Do I expect better? Hell yeah. Can I fault them if this is a stepping stone in the right direction? Hell no.
