animated RPG damage counters?

Does anyone know how to make damage counters animated like they are in RPGs? (i.e. like making the numbers bounce around as they appear?)
If that's not a good description, I'm thinking of something kinda like this:
Super mario RPG =
Seiken Densetsu 3 =

in MMF2 counters can be created and have movements, just like normal Active objects. Using these basic features it shouldn't be too hard to figure out.
