Modern style FPS usually bore me to tears
dear hagar you won a place in my heart for this comment. also let me know once you got it. ALSO ive watched at some pretty long rage gameplay footage and ive to admit im excited. really this game looks great.
i also read the whole article on cracked and ive gotta agree
I've got it. PC version, of course. And it is one of the best games ever. So many great lines (some original, most "borrowed") . I could've played it for hours more than it lasted. Some good level design, especially in areas with the shrink-pads.
The multiplayer was, unfortunately, butchered by Gearbox. Doesn't support dedicated servers. I tried hosting a game for an hour, but only a couple of high-latency players joined and were automatically booted seconds after. I'll never get to play a game.

I'm a bit surprised at the mediocre reviews dnf has been receiving, but reading all the reviews I'm left with the impression that given it's history, it was a game destined to be brought down by the critics.
It's a game that is easy to criticize but even with all it's flaws it's a great game, one I've enjoyed more than the conveyor belt of call of duty games the press jerks off to every year. It's not a perfect game, the driving sections are awful, some weapons aren't very fun to use and I would expect more blood but it just is a fun experience, duke is still a great character and the humor in the game is pretty good, unlike anything released between 2000-2011. I haven't finished the game yet, but so far it looks like the dn3D sequel I've been waiting for.
Also LOL at gamespot for having a gay person review duke nukem forever. Not surprisingly the score was 3.5, the lowest it has received so far.
I'm pretty cheesed off that due to Sony's incompetence us PS3 fans are left without a demo for the game. As far as i know there has been a demo on the PC and the 360. I would no doubt love this game but i can't afford to go chucking £40 about on a game i might like.

DNF offers nothing to old school fans. The closest thing to "old school" is the outdated graphics. DNF is nothing like it's predecessors when it comes to gameplay. We get some of the old DN3D weapons, sure. But kinda takes the fun away from it when you're limited to only 2 weapons at the same time. DNF actually is a modern shooter... done poorly.
After getting the demo on steam, I must agree with Deaval. It's not an old school shooter IMO. Levels are far too linear in my opinion (just like pushing though a corridor!), it has the modern FPS mechanic of no true health bar (encourages shoot once, hide and recover mechanics which ARE BORING) and two weapons at a time only ?
Checking this out tonight, looks a lot more fun IMO
Since first person shooters have become big on consoles I personally think they have slowed them down and made them easier (to account for aiming using analogue sticks). But this just makes them slow and boring to me . For example, just look how much faster doom is than most modern shooters out there today...

That's not strictly true, there are jumping puzzles...
Hmm... E1M6, "Central Processing", I believe...

Funny, I'm sure Doom predates de facto mouse aiming.
The original is keyboard only aiming, but the new engines (like the one referenced in the video, and Doomsday) allow aiming. Try Quake 3 or Serious Sam to see how much games have slowed down in terms of speed and numbers of enemies - and easyness (hiding does not recover health).
Only recent FPS I like these days is Serious Sam FE & SE HD, and those are just old games with a new engine.

Yes, I play them regularly. Just pointing out that the controller precision argument doesn't hold any water, Doom in particular being a game where you don't have to aim up and down. There are practical reasons why you can't have STALKER on a console, but the transition from Duke 3D to DNF - a showcase of every bullshit trend in FPS design of the last 15 years - is something different.
Haha, I downloaded the demo and that's pretty much what I thought!
I do not agree about the controller argument though - the only reason controller based FPS's are playable at all is usually due to assisted aiming - if they do not have it (or you disable it) you usually only have little accuracy whilst aiming fast (and the high accuracy mode is slow!). FPS are just better with a keyboard and mouse - precision and speed.
The last console based FPS I enjoyed was TimeSplitters 2. In terms of console based FPS, to me that was pretty much perfect.
I finally got my hands on the demo of DNF and i have to say i am very disappointed! I loved the original DN3D and played it most nights. I even had the Apocalypse expansions. The driving spoils the game and from what i can tell adds no real value to the game. Can honestly say i will not be buying this game. Shame really as it could have been soooooo much better
