Let's have a classic TDC ramble about games. Out of all the games I have ever played, I would say there is a very select few that I can pick up at any time, play them and still find them fun. My games are:
Super Mario Kart : unrivalled multi player racing game in my opinion. Later Mario Karts was either too slow (MK 64) and or too imbalanced (blue shells). I actually prefer Diddy Kong Racing over MK 64...
GTA : The original, I can remember getting this back in 97 for my PC. There was lots of talk of it getting banned back then for it's content! Times have changed... Still find this so much fun, recently played it for about 8 hours strait on a plane (until my netbook battery failed!).
Roller Coaster Tycoon (1& 2): I never got into RCT 3 for some reason, it never clicked with me and I just did not find it fun. Still enjoy building parks and massive roller coasters in RCT 1 & 2 mind. Love the scenarios in RCT 1 especially.
GTA Vice City : Something about this I just find more fun than the other 3D GTA's, I found GTA4 to be particularly boring. With a car editor you can have lots of fun with golf carts
Micro Machines 2 Turbo Tournament : still a great multiplayer racing game, especially if you want to compete for pure "driving" skill.
Super Mario Bros 3 & Super Mario World: No matter how many times I have completed these, I can still play them and find them fun.
Come on people, list your old games that you still find fun!
I could list loads, but the ones I play most still.
Command and Conquer retaliation (Psone) - The skirmish mode is brilliant fun, and i used to play Red alert on my pc back when my copy still worked. It's for windows 95 you know!
Final fantasy 9 - Just about my favourite game on anything ever. I don't mind playing FF7 either. Once a year maybe.
Age of empires 2 - Still even grab a few guys and play a big game together over the internet. Can't be beat as far as i'm concerned.
Diablo 2 - But only when i'm playing with a few others. I wish more games were like this.
Buck rogers countdown to doomsday - Sci-fi RPG on the Megadrive looks and sounds pretty awful but there is something about playing through the story that is still great fun. No random generated maze crawling.
Sonic 3 and Knuckles Blasting through and collecting all of the emeralds never gets old for me Great music too. For that reason I prefer to play through the first two levels just to hear the music. On real hardware of course .
Card fighters clash (Neogeo pocket) - SNK's attempt at a Pokemon killer involved endlessly playing card games with people until you have a good enough deck to win uh... something or other. Much better than it sounds.
Perfect Dark (N64) - Don't get the chance to play with people much anymore so i plump for a few rounds with bots. No game since has as many multiplayer options.
The Dizzy series (Amstrad CPC) - I know how to solve all of the puzzles now but I still get my old CPC out every now and then and fire up a Dizzy game. Pretty fast to beat them in one sitting too.
The Newzealand story (Arcade) - After buyting Taito legends on the ps2 i played this like crazy. It inspired a me a bit in my own games. Still can't beat that damn slippery last level.
Banjo-Kazooie: A fantastic platformer that, for me, was more enjoyable than Mario 64. Freezeasy Peak, the Christmas level, evokes fond Christmas memories as a child, with beautiful music. I didn't like Banjo Tooie nearly as much
James Pond 2: Codename Robocod: Great level design, plus it was the first Amiga game I ever played
Goldeneye: A brilliant game, as we all know. Highlights include playing 4-player deathmatch as a family - but with three controllers. My Dad always ended up with the steering wheel...
Final Fantasy 7: Fantastic story that actually made you care about the characters

Sonic 2: Probably the best Sonic game.
Sonic Adventure: Annoying hub bits aside, Sonics part of the story was fantastic
Sonic 3D: (Megadrive) Game was enjoyable enough, but music from Diamond Dust Act 1, Rusty Ruins 1 and the 2nd, 4th and 6th boss fights are so perfect. YouTube them.
Theme Park: Bit buggy at times, but this is the only sim game I've ever liked, due to my childhood love of theme parks
Medievil: I haven't found any game with as much awesome gothic style as this game. I play this every halloween and its fun.
Sim Theme Park: That Ball guy is awesome. "Eureka you've discovered a new ride. I mean, you've researched a new ride upgrade, but that's good too!" Memorized like half of his sayings lol.
Kingdom Hearts 1 & 2: Disney and Final Fantasy go great together no?
Roller Coaster Tycoon: Pick up people and throw them in the water, trap them in a pit, Make a shuttle loop go 60 mph and then crash.

I agree with you on Mario Kart. Why the N64 one is so popular is beyond me. It is by far the WORST Mario Kart game in existence. I actually enjoyed Double Dash and the latest one is a lot of fun, but the games are just too imbalanced like you said.

New games just don't do it for me. I enjoy one in a billion and the next one I'm looking forward to is Ninja Gaiden 3. Almost everything else looks/feels the same.

I agree Gamester. I am not a fan of Mario Kart 64, yet Super Mario Kart is probably my most favourite game of all time. I also like Serious Sam (mainly SE).
Where do you guys buy your carts? The days of Gamestation selling "retro" stuff have long since gone, and I have not been to a market for a many many years. Some ebay prices seem ridiculous for some carts I want, in particular Super Bomberman 3 [SNES] and New Ghostbusters 2 [NES].
I did go crazy for really old stuff last year like Atari VCS (I managed to get a good six switcher and lots of carts for £21 on ebay, took a gamble as it was untested without a PSU) and ZX Spectrum that was given to me. Would like an Amiga 500 at some point too. Something just seems missing when emulating.

If I do buy games I usually do it at a pawn shop, a flea market, or a garage sale, but it is getting significantly more difficult to find good games like this now days.
In the past I managed to pick up a complete black label copy of ff7 for $7, one or two copies of mario rpg for a few bucks, and plenty of other games I barely remember. Recently I purchased about 15+ sega genesis games for $10 or something ridiculous at a garage sale.
Emulation seems to distort the sound a bit and the scale is never perfect imo.
I run zsnes 1.42 (snes emulator)and nester(nes emulator) and they work fine for me if anyones looking for a decent emulator. Gens (genesis emulator) has some control issues but is the easiest to link up online with via netplay. I've been able to play tinytoons allstars, contra hardcorps, and streets of rage online with family. Nestopia (nintendo emulator) is supposed to link up online as well but I haven't taken the time to figure that one out yet. I love the systems an cartriges thing but I have hundreds of games and I'm glad I can regain the floor space in my room. It's also pretty sweet that most new tv's can double as a computer monitor.
o Adventure ( 1978 ) - simple but captivating Atari game. I love the design.
o Thex.der ( 1987 ) - my inspiration to make games.
o Warcraft 2 ( 1996 ) - my 2nd RTS after Dune 2. I played tons of this on Kali.
o Counter-Strike ( 1999/2000 ) - it took me a long time to stop sucking at CS... after that, I was hooked.
Mischief Makers! Best N64 game ever. In one of the boss fights, you can ride a cat that is riding a missile! Looking back on things, things getting BIGGER when you pick them up and shake them seems to be an intended euphemism on Treasure's part. Shake Shake! Shake Shake! Oh baby...
Of course there's also the classics like old Sonic, Mario, Donkey Kong Country games.
Occasionally I replay through some of my favorite old klik games too like Watkins or Eternal Daughter. I'd play through Noitu Love 2 again, but I lost it when I had to format my harddrive and I don't want to shell out $20 to download it again.
Oh Man, I could go on forever and keep naming. Given the fact that I should be into the "newer" Generation games because of my young age. I much rather prefer the 80's & 90's game era games. my favorites include:
Sonic the Hedgehog 1,2 & 3 - Beat all three of them, still have each on emulator
Super Mario Bros. - THe Original NES one.
Kingdom Hearts 1 - Loved this game
Street Fighter 2 - So many memories!
Pokemon Red-Crystal - The oldies were infact the best
The Legend of Zelda- A Link to the Past
and Dragon Ball Z series - Mostly on the SNES.
Mario Kart 64 - A Family favorite!
