To be honest, I'd say forget about a competition for now. A competition can be a lot of fun, but it's not just something to start on a whim.

Just relax and get used to the community, play around with Fusion, start a few projects, get used to how it works, maybe try to make a game to completion. Get a feel for what goes into making a game. Once you've got a few projects behind you and have a better idea of the process, you'll get a better idea of what people will look for in potential competitions, and what kind of metrics to judge others' hard work by.

That's my advice.

Sorry if I put you off with my reply last time. It seems to me that people assume everyone will get excited about a competition about making games because we all like making games!
However the themes are often nothing to do with making games. I can't get excited about making a game themed around Boiled eggs, Shrove tuesday or I dunno, guilt? because they have nothing to do with making games.

If the theme was something like, having to use the mode 7 object ,using no more than one frame or something that looks and sounds like an Atari 2600 game, that would at least be interesting.

Man. Competitions are a lot of work, but they're ok at generating some activity. Don't do a Tourey though.

Haven't been around aside from the casual lurk (and voting as such in the general poll), but I'm not observing a whole lot of traffic, so you could find success in limiting size.

If you are hoping to stir up activity, small competitions can get decent participation (though you have to get them in the same spot at the same time). The results are usually terrible (humor left as an exercise to the player), but it gets people to reinstall the software.

One of the hardest parts about making a game is just starting. Perhaps a competition at creating a small game mechanic or engine would lower the barrier for entries. The idea would be to set a small timeframe (a week), but expect a ~2 to ~8 hr effort put into a project. At the end of the competition, everyone loses from having objectively terrible games, but at least there's some progress on the way to a finished game.

Or you could go smaller in a completely unproductive way and limit participation down to the VIP membership group:

I dunno. Good luck with incentives, timing, gathering attention, and the inevitable disappointment in some form or another. Not to dissuade the idea, but I think it's going to take a few failures to get things right.

Edit: The links are used as general examples- none of the download links work and the images are probably broken too. Pretty fitting in this context.
