Dear Daily Clickers!
Some of you, like me, aren't the best clickers; and for some of you, like me, the problem is that we work on too much which isn't really the most important thing for the player, and leave out what the player really wants.
So then I created this post: What do you want most from a game?
Primary I write down the review factors of The Daily Click. Is it:
-Presentation
-Gameplay
-Graphics
-Sound and Music
-Lastability
Or is every part equally important? Or do you want to subtract something? It is all up to you!
Thank you for your time and please continue visit joNickArt Entertainment website: http://www.jonickart.tk/
Gameplays most important. While graphics have a strong role too, gameplay needs to be fun. Take Red Feud. It looked pretty poor, but I downloaded it and I was hooked.
Gameplay is most important. Although FF7 has crappy graphics compared to today, it's still a great game simply by how it's played. If the graphics are pure crap though, a lot of points ar etaken off.
Cartoon-y graphics to get me to download it, then Gameplay all the way. I refuse to download games with 3D render graphics. They... how you say... SUCK!
Show me the power child,
I'd like to say,
That I'm down on my knees today,
Gives me the butterflies,
Gives me away,
'Til I'm up on my feet again,
I'm feeling outshined.
The graphics are very important. Making stick figures is a death mark. Stick figures must die. Anyway, gameplay is one of the most important parts of making a good game! Just look at Micro Man by Vreal (I think Vreal is dead, but the site still works). The graphics are extreamly simple, but its really fun. And 3-D rendered graphics don't always suck, Ashman.
Fine Garbage since 2003.
CURRENT PROJECT:
-Paying off a massive amount of debt in college loans.
-Working in television.
Show me the power child,
I'd like to say,
That I'm down on my knees today,
Gives me the butterflies,
Gives me away,
'Til I'm up on my feet again,
I'm feeling outshined.
No, my real name is Ashley (Ash for short) and people saying that's a girls name so I put man on the end... Ash-Man
Show me the power child,
I'd like to say,
That I'm down on my knees today,
Gives me the butterflies,
Gives me away,
'Til I'm up on my feet again,
I'm feeling outshined.
Gameplay is most important, but few people are going to download your game if it looks poor. (Word of mouth from people who love your game will help a lot, though.)
It's better than screaming like Ned Flanders, eh Buster?
Show me the power child,
I'd like to say,
That I'm down on my knees today,
Gives me the butterflies,
Gives me away,
'Til I'm up on my feet again,
I'm feeling outshined.
Okay, guys, the main ingrediant is addiction. The rest is hook. Most of the things you described is either hook, or addiction. The hook, as in a hook that catches a fish, catches the player. It is that little bit of something that makes him (or her) download the game. It is that little bit of something that keeps the player playing for the first 30 seconds. This can be good graphics, music, sound, or just basically, presentation. Any wow factors are more hook than addiction.
Okay, the rest is addiction. The player needs to want the game like a kitten wants it's mothers teet. The game needs to give them what they want. Ever played wing commander? Well, I played that one where you fight the bugs. Now, at first, I was curious. There was this guy, who everyone was giving shit, because they all think he gets a lot of undue credit because of his father. He's the new guy. So instantly, I got kind of a conection with him. We were both the guys with a couple of great friends, and a whole club of people who don't like us. Though as I played the game, he made his way up the ladder, people started respecting him. They started depending on him. So he couldn't let them down. He had to keep going, and never give up. Towards the end of the game, he was a frigging hero. Then I finished the game and thought, "Yeah, I'm the coolest guy in the world." Though it took a while to sink in the fact that I had set it to "easy" and that these people on the screen were actually actors.
Another example of addiction: I played tetris for the first time. I sucked, but I had nothing better to do. The second time, I like, doubled my score. After a few days practise, I could get a good half hour out of each game. I figured, "Damn, tetris is my natural talent. I'm getting so good at this so quickly." It wasn't till I realized that just a little extra skill could half the rate the bricks were building up, and therefore double the amount of time, I spent playing tetris.
Final fantasy X: (SPOILER ALERT!!!! Skip paragraph if you havn't finished FFX) I played that game for so long. At first it was just to see the next scene, but eventaully, it was to see what happens next. There was a point where I had saw Titus as me (Yeah, I wish). I got to the scene with Titus and Yuna and thought, "Holy crap, Yuna is way out of Titus's league! She's a frigging summoner! One of the most respected of people, and now she's kissing Titus! Titus is a nobody in this world! Wow, go Titus!" (It wasn't until months later that I realized, the girls playing this would be like, "Oh my God, that fully buff blitzball player is gonna pash Yuna! He can have any girl he wants, and he wants Yuna? He doesn't even understand who she is or what she does, and yet he still choses her.")
Metal Gear Solid 2: Okay this game is massive on the addiction, but shocking for selling sequils. In this game, the plot is always thickening. Now the player plays on, in the hopes that everything will make sense. He plays on, things make less sense, so he has to play on even more, to make sense of twice as much woffle. By the time you've reached the end of the game, the plot is so thick, you could cut it with a knife. Though they explain it away with bulshit mishmash.
Grand Theft Auto: Ever just felt like blowing something up? Setting fire to someone, or crashing a car? Need I say more? Well if that's not enough, there are actors depending on you to work your way through jobs, to get cool stuff, and a false sense of achievement deep inside.
There are heaps of puzzle type games on the net that I play. I'm not as good at them as I'd like to think, but I like the ones where you don't have that many options anyway, but you look really smart when you accidentally pick the right option, because everything just somehow falls into place in a really complex sophisticated way. Look for "Just skidding" in google. It's a great example of what I mean.
Here's an interesting point: I gave up on abe's odd world because I hated being held responsable for the death of all the whatever's that I failed to save the life of.
Another thing, don't have LIVES! The whole point of lives is to determine when the player needs to put another quater in the slot. If you are giving the player a free game, give them unlimited lives. Hey, it's less programing on your part.
Remember, the player is your friend, not your enemy. You are trying to challange him, not test him. You should be greatful for your players, and your game should reflect that. You are trying to trick the player into thinking that he's smart, not stupid. You want to give him the rush of fearing defeat, without actually defeating him. You want your player to walk away saying, "You know, I'm really good at that game, though it's pretty hard."
Okay to sum up, a game needs to be addictive, and there needs to be a hook to get the player interested long enough to get addicted. For more info, check my article in my profile.
Copy this to your hard drive. It will be worth alot when I'm famous.
Notice: Spelling mistakes above left in for people who need to correct others to make their life fulfilled.

How dare you use the Australian flag as an avatar Jon Chambers.
Neither you, our prime minister, or Steve Erwin represents our country properly.
I recommend you either look up a bloke by the name of Reg Regan to find a true ambassador for our country. K THX BYE
BTW...Yes, Ashley is a girls name, but I'm not one to poke names cause Muggus is too...I think...

LOL. Steve Erwin is one of the worst things that crawled outta Australia. IMHO, even if some of you say that Ashley isn't a girl's name, it's a girly name nonetheless. Most names that end with a 'y' or 'ee' sounds girlish.
On topic, graphics bring you in more downloads and more fans. Gameplay keeps them in. Games are all about gameplay. I really don't care about lastability in gaming anymore; all the 'long-lasting' klik game get their lastability by making players run from one place to another, making uber-tough bosses (e.g. ED), or just forcing you to memorize every monster/trap movement until you pass the level. I just go for a quick n' fun game these days or a deathmatch game.
I dunno about most people, but I care about sound & music. I spent 3 hours fine-tuning my sound system on my new computer. I'd appreciate a klik game with 3D sound, EAX, and the whole 'far-away' sound effect. I'd do one for Invasion of the Muz 2, but I don't know a thing about sound effects in MMF.
Oh, and like Jon Chambers said, don't put lives in your game. I wrote a long, long paragraph in an 'unpublished' article on that. Though Jon, just put those words in an article, not just this thread.
Disclaimer: Any sarcasm in my posts will not be mentioned as that would ruin the purpose. It is assumed that the reader is intelligent enough to tell the difference between what is sarcasm and what is not.
...being an Australian...and more fuckin Australian than any of the other cunts on this forum (notice the swearing) I oughta know dickhead. Obviously you have no fuckin idea who Reg Regan is, so shut your fuckin trap!

The main character of Wild Arms 2 was named Ashley (guy)
The voice actor for the main character in Lunar:TSSS and Lunar:TSSSC is an Ashley man as well. (watch the credits or watch the Lunar behind the scenes movie CD)
Best quality you need in a game? Definately addiction. The longer you can get someone addicted and held down to your game, the longer other people's games don't get attention. And if you run a game that charges monthly then the mass addiction that your game might have will rake in more and more money!
Addiction comes from Gameplay.
Secondary to that would be graphics and sounds/music, but not by a heavy shadow.
