nice to know that, in response to this sasser worm nonsense, microsoft's best engineers are on the case. i took this screen earlier when i had the worm myself.
I think Pete needs to draw big arrows pointing to the important part of pictures. It applies to news posts too, how do you think they're going to understand if you don't type "IRONY" in a size 20 font?
Ive got a similar problem with a half life mod.
international online soccer.
i got the latest version and the auto updater thingy too.
i cant join a game because it claims to be an outdated version,
then the auto updater opens and searches for a newer version,
then it says the version i have installed is the newest.
In the future viruses and this crap will be a lot harder to do...Thats because microsoft is going to put security right into the circuits...which will supposedly monitor it somehow..
I don't remember what I read or what it was about, all I do remember is hardware would play a big role in the future at cutting down on this crap.
What kind of nerd finds sexual pleasure in making a virus? I guess it's the uber dorks way of vandalism.
Lol, soon the internet will be roaming with bad folk gangstas that claim porn sites as there territory, and if you venture onto their turf, they'll cap yo hard drive!
The last virus creator they caught was a young woman? So its not only a guy thing. However we can easily agree that both virus creators as well as hackers and spam deliveres all share an odd view on life. I mean, they all make software that we dont want but that they want to install on our computers without our consent.
That reminds me of those completely stupid Sex Toolbar programs. When they ask to install that and I click no I get a message with "Please, click Yes to install FREE software!" After having clicked No for 3 times it asks "FREE software not installed. Install now?" Apparently those suckers think I don't care what I'm installing, as long as it's free. And after having clicked No they still did not get my point. So they are smart and incredibly stupid at the same time
Oh and on a diffrent note, What is the best brand of taco sauce to bath in? You see we all know that bathing in tacho sauce has great advantages. It repels space monkeies, and if you add a bag of chips you have a party . But the problem you see is that a tub full of taco sauce would be expensive soooo what is the best brand? becuase having a tub full of crappy taco sauce would be a mess! Thanks for any help.
My brother recently bought a new AMD 64 comp with 1028 meg ddr ram, and 2 160 gig HDs, he got sasser the second he setup his internet connection, and when he tried to remove it, and when he did. The HD(s) were totally screwed, and he had to undergo a format almost right out of the box.... Its like blaster, with more side-effects.
Edit: He had 29 files which were infected.

A firewall (especially a hardware firewall) helps ALOT against worms like blaster or sasser. Never got neither blaster or sasser on our computers (LAN with 3 pc computers). Also a good antivirus software helps alot like Norton Antivirus 2003/2004, Norman Antivirus, Kasperlabsky, Mcafee or other popular antivirus products THAT ARE ACTUALLY UPDATED!!!
I'm using Windows XP here. I just downloaded and installed AVG. I updated its definitions and ran a virus-scan. The Sasser Worm isn't on my computer so far.
And about your screenshot: It could have been a variant of the Sasser Worm that was designed to hide from Microsoft's online detection system.
And I don't hate Microsoft. I like Microsoft WAY better than Crapple Computer.

i dunno ive used Microsoft products for years and they've never let me down yet. especially the mice they make, ive had an intellieye explorer (5 buttons) for 4 years... hell it gets battered when i take it to college... but its survived and working perfectly!
funny, ive never had a virus. except now if i right click an MP3 file this PC locks up. thankfully i dont use it much
(the translation is a little crap , waiter stand for server , sayable stand for disable, division stand for share ...)
btw: Cybermaze , your lan are already protected by default (except if you are forwarding bad port or have set up a DMZ server) , this is simply because of the TCP/IP protocol , the "listen" action is local , the rooter isn't aware of this , when a SYN packet (connection request) arrive , the rooter doesn't know where to forward the packet, if the port requested in on the Port Forwarding Table , he forward to the comp , overwise it block the packet
oh , and win98se rocks

Lol pete, Yeh i was infected, so was my brother.
I found Microsofts one didnt really work, try one from F-Security, then download http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms04-011.mspx
and run F-Securitys thing again. also Turn-off system restore!
most times the virus will still be there, so goto C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ and delete all the files ending with "_up". then restart your PC and hopefully it will be fixed.
There's a better anti-virus system than any program you can download. It's called common sense

common sense doesn't restrict inbound port access or prevent loopholes being found in microsoft's coding
This is why Microsoft is going to turn on the firewall by default in service pack 2. If more people would use firewalls this kind of stuff would not happen. Also, Microsoft put out a fix for this 2 weeks before the worm hit, but not many people keep their PC's updated. The update from Microsoft does not remove the worm if you already have it, but it will prevent you from getting it. I am afraid user error is to blame for this one.
99 percent chance that the above post is 100 percent correct.
Keeping Windows up to date helps alot against those worms who use holes in windows. Remember that!
Batchman. I know my router protects alot against well, worms that use holes in windows, hackers, etc. etc. Thats also one of the reasons I chose Cybercity as my ISP (a local company in my country) as they ONLY deliver ADSL with a router. A router gives so much security compared to a modem.
Oh, well ... have to go now ... I will update this later.
To show how franticly viruses spread, and how I easily protected myself, I'll tell what happened just the other day.
Yesterday, I was searching on Google for .wav to .mp3 converters (For this one forum topic). When I went onto this one page (I think it was dailymp3.com), AVG informed me that I had caught a Trojan Horse. Although it can't immediately remove viruses like Norton, I was able to run the full scan. Within 30 minutes, I removed the Trojan before it damaged my computer at all.

yeah, although with AVG if you want to remove a virus quickly you can do a "custom scan" and only scan the folder the virus is in, so not having an auto-remove feature isn't too drastic.
