you say you dont wanna rip, then you say you can't draw! tsk tsk julia... one way around it is making really-simple-a-2-year-old-could-do-it gfx, if you wanna sample of those check out mr stumps dentures or, if you get good at coding, you could get someone to do thems graphics for you. dont look at me tho, already gots too much on me hands actually i don't since djw's still working on the engine...but still, don't look at me until you have good coding

At least on this site, you'll get respect just for trying to make your own graphics -- whether they are any good or not. My advice is not to follow any tutorials and just play around until you figure out your own style that works. Then, after you refine it, not only will it look good, but it will also be unique.

You don't need to be able to do great graphics to make a good-looking game. Just build all your characters simple manageable shapes and animate by cutting and pasting bodyparts. There are quite a few games done that way here. The standard for graphics in klik games is horribly low, so you can't really go wrong.

I'd write an article on graphics, but I don't have the time. Well, I did one already, but it still ain't good enough. Anyways, long story short...

Hiring an artist
Basically, all the freelancing artists out there have worked with a few idiots who never finish their games. So to hire an artist, you either need to have a decent track record/reputation, or just make an engine and story and stuff to prove that you're gonna finish the game. And make it a good game. Nobody wants to waste their time making graphics for a game that can't even win a GOTW.

Drawing them yourself
I'm still writing a long tutorial on this and gave up... but long story short... as a newbie artist, sketch your gfx on paper, then draw them. Sounds pretty obvious, but it does wonders for your help. It's easier to draw with a real pencil & eraser instead of a digital one. With enough experience, you don't even need the real ones.

If you have trouble with animation, look for Moho. It's a great animation program and it's cheap.

It's hard to hire artists, especially for 'lesser' projects these days, so you'll have to make do with drawing your own till at least you have a decent reputation. Or as they say, with a feminine nick, you can get anything you want from the click community if you know how to ask...

Disclaimer: Any sarcasm in my posts will not be mentioned as that would ruin the purpose. It is assumed that the reader is intelligent enough to tell the difference between what is sarcasm and what is not.

Julia (the first Julia, not the second one), if you can draw better on paper then try drawing on paper and scanning it in. You can color the drawings on your computer. Use a pen that can be erased so it's dark enough, and scan in using black and white mode. I am not that great at drawing myself but if you use this method you can get kind of a "Yoshi's Island" style.

99 percent chance that the above post is 100 percent correct.

What I like to do is find a game that has the kind of sprites I want to draw. Then I look at them and draw original ones using the ripped sprites as a guide.

A good game creator once told me that it is easy to make good games with top angle graphics. Try to make your sprites like they were seen from the eyes of a bird.
