STRIFE'S REVIEW: PLANET OF CARTMANS Well, most of you know of Junkman (Max) as a very talented MIDI composer (he composed most of the music in Warbot/Warbot 2). So, after looking through his website, I decided to play one of his games; Planet of Cartmans. This may be a South Park fangame, but even if you hate the TV show (I find it offensive), it might interest you to take a peek at this game. >>PRESENTATION: 7 POC begins in the small mountain town of South Park. Kenny (you) is sitting on a park bench, when suddenly, some NASA kids knock him out and bring him aboard their spaceship. Kenny escapes, but crash lands onto a strange planet full of Cartman clones. The opening "movie" is satisfactory, as well as the main menu of the game. >>GAMEPLAY: 5 In a word... dismal. Kenny uses the default TGF platform engine for movement, and for most people, that's enough to give this game a rating of 1. The enemy movements are very basic, but they are formidable nonetheless. However, Junkman explained in the game's description that he didn't want to spend months creating his own engine. He just wanted to have fun making his game, and I respect him for that. >>GRAPHICS: 2 Urgh, what an eyesore. POC uses graphics from the TGF library, and the hand-drawn graphics aren't that good either. But, they're fitting enough, and I wasn't bothered by the graphics. >>SOUND AND MUSIC: 9 AWESOME. This is perhaps the game's only strength. No doubt, Junkman makes great music, and this is no exception. The dark, creepy songs really set the mood, and they make up for the lack of graphics and gameplay. >>LASTABILITY: 4 Most people won't want to finish the game, but that's just them. I found POC to be a somewhat enjoyable platform game. >>OVERALL: 5 An average platform game that is enjoyable to some. Simply put, Junkman likes to have fun making his games, regardless of how awful they may be. Kudos to him.
