The Daily Click ::. Downloads ::. Review Review: The Griffon Legend
The Griffon Legend is nicely laid out, with the game delivering a solid RPG feel and the sprites bringing back memories of old NES RPGs. The front screens are suitably basic, and serve their purpose well, and the introduction and ending screens are fine for a mini-RPG. Gameplay is great fun, although combat can be a touch hit & miss at times, as you can get stuck on enemies and scenery. The magic system could have been explained a touch better, as I only worked out some way in the game later that using your first gained magic spell is the way to gain other magic spells. Levelling is quite fast early on, but once you hit level 7, it takes an un-natural amount of time to level up further, and you end up getting blasted too easily in new areas. I would say the experience and character developement system could certainly be improved, but for a mini-RPG, they do work okay. The level layouts are quite good, and the temples are fun to explore; boss-fights are well done, and the enemies whilest powerful, are not annoyingly difficult, and can usually be done on the first go if you are experienced in these games. The tile based system looks great in places, but becomes a confusing mess in others; notably in the outdoor sections, and indeed when trying to find a staircase (which is a single tile). The sprites are nicely drawn, and the larger enemies look great; elemental spells look awesome too. The sound is all-in-all okay, but the annoying beep when you get below a certain HP level will drive anyone insane. It forces you to either use a potion, or failing that re-load your last save (or just turn off the sound!). Audio effects with regard to combat, spells, etc work well however, and certainly add to the game. Being a mini-RPG, it's difficult to judge the games lastability; I played right through to the end in around 2 hours, and enjoyed most of it thoroughly. Overall, a great game for you action-RPG fans, but make sure you can overlook a few flaws here and there. Getting stuck on scenery killed the game a few times for me, but luckily you get into the habit of saving quite often, and the available 4 slots help this. I give The Griffon Legend a tasty 8 and sincerely hope a sequel will be made!
