I posted this in the forum but I realized it would make a good article so here it is! I revised it a little bit.
Mr Saturn's five steps for a perfect boss version 1.1:
1. Do NOT use path movement. EVER.
2. Only use bouncing ball movement in conjunction with code. In other words, don't have your boss bouncing around like a stupid pool ball without any intelligence.
3. Should start out easy and slowly get harder the closer it is to dying.
4. Should attack in a somewhat predictable pattern (not TOO predictable though, throw in a little randomness to keep the player on his or her toes).
5. Should NOT be impossible to beat on your first try. Watkins is an example of a game with very horribly done bosses because you could only beat them after learning their patterns. The player should always have a chance at beating the boss on his or hers first try.
Anyway, I noticed that a bunch of klick games have really horrible bosses so maybe this will benefit some of you.
