This is a game that I began working on a while back, but never actually completed it. In the end I created the first five levels, a boss and a shoot-em-up section.

Yes, it's a fangame - a Sonic fangame, to be more precise. You don't actually get to play as Sonic though, but as Sally instead (if that means anything to any of you). Your main weapon and means of advancing through the levels is a grappling hook. Fire it in one of eight directions into a floor/wall/ceiling, and you can swing across large gaps, climb walls and...well, whatever you want really. It can also be used to destroy enemies.

The levels themselves have many different routes and secrets, so take a little time to explore while you learn how to use the grappling hook. You'll be using it quite a bit.

The download contains the last version of the game in .cca format (you will need MMF 1.2 or later to view it). The necessary extensions and instructions on how to play are included. If you don't have MMF, then you can play an older demo version in .exe format - http://homepage.ntlworld.com/christopher.lowe7/salquest.zip

3rd edit!
I deliberately made the final version a .cca file rather than an exe (read above).
Oh, and...*gasp* I've commited a terrible sin!! I've used ripped graphics in the game because I'm no pixel artist...my God! =P

4th edit - For anyone that might be interested in this old game, I've updated all the links to my new webspace.

THANKS FOR POSTING A GAY MESSAGE LIKE THAT what the hell is wrong with ripped graphics, they look as good, or maybe better than homemade. It's only that "the author didnt make the graphics himself"...

Forgot to add the EXE file??

Looks like he fell asleep momentarialy on the keyboard =P. Well anyway, any comments, *constructive* criticism etc related to the game will be appreciated. If you don't have MMF 1.2 or later, then a older .exe version is available - http://clwe.sepwich.com/salquest.zip

Well I thought the grappling hook was neat. It took my awhile to figure out I had to hit shift TWO times to make it work. Not once. But like most Sonic Fan Games you die easy, and this one is no exception. How do I get my life back? Do I just have to live through with 3 hits? I'll review it if I can get somewhere farther.

Yeah, the grappling controls are a little fiddly, but I designed them in mind with giving the player as much 'freedom' as possible. You can restore hit points by finding 'hit point' icons, or by collecting 50 rings (get searching around those levels!)

Now that I know I have some hope of surviving a level, I'll go run through your game again later.

three hits, in the original sonic games (you know, the real ones that where sold in actual boxes and everything) you only where able to take two hits (unless you ahd the shield), so i dun see whats wrong with 3 XD

K last thing before I make a review, is the boss level with Robotnik beatable? You get a hint to hit "ROBOTNIK" and not the machine.. How do you even hit him? Ive tried going under, over and behind him and still no effect except me getting burned, fried, and blasted to death. And by all means, if you have a password to pass that boss could you send it to me? I really don't feel like going through those levels again :P . I did find out how to do a grapple crawl up a long tall wall. CRTL-CRTL-SHIFT little tricky but very helpful. I like the game better now that I'm careful to actually pay attention to my surroundings and not just run straight through the game.

nice, good for a fangame i guess

(Georgie) I'm not sure if you knew this, but you can use the grappling hook as a weapon, and if you press Up+left, or Up+right, then you can fire it in that direction.

This is pretty good, although I do agree with the comments about the controls being fiddly. It's a shame you didn't finish it. And how did you make that awesome parralax scrolling?

Oops, sorry about that, the comment posting system here is annoying

I did that sly, but I still couldn't hit him. I also would attack him with the normal HORIZONTAL ATTACK when he did his blue lazer. I guess I could try again, but that would be the last time.

This game is fun! At least this has a static engine, unlike many other fangames. :)

Thanks for all your comments! Sorry, but it's very unlikely that I'll finish this game. I stopped work on it a while ago (guess I just don't have the 'staying power' for long projects), hence the open source .cca version that is available. Ah well...perhaps someone can learn something from my messy 'code' =P About the boss...I got a lot of 'stick' from other peeps about that. It is pretty unfair...you have to wait until Robotnik stops tracking you (just before the laser), then jump and fire down-right roughly at Robotnik himself. If you score a hit, the laser stops. Repeat four times to defeat him...have fun =P. There's nothing after that in the demo, so you're not missing anything.

Posted by Georgie 21st December, 2002

I did that eventually. BUt I also would land on Robotnik or Miss my shot on him while trying to jump over. Oh well. I kinda wanted to see your game finished. DO you have a longer version? Or are those pictures just made up?

Posted by Evil Monkey 21st December, 2002

Those screen-shots are probably from an unreleased version of the game. :(

Heh, I'd never imagine a Sonic Fan Game here. If you enjoyed this, try other fan games at http://sfghq.emulationzone.org for Sonic games, and http://fanmade.emulationzone.org/mfgg for Mario fangames!

This is probably the best sonic fan game ive played. Most fan games no matter WHAT suck. This is a good example of a fan game.I voted on for gotw.
