I've noticed that gaming is a lot more boring these few years than it used to be. Back in the old days, there were games like X-Com: Terror from the Deep, the King's Quest series, Titans of Steel, the Quest for Glory series, Fallout 2, Conquest of Elysium, Betrayal at Krondor, just to name a few.

Now... the best game I can think of, commercially and freeware, is probably Darwinia. There are plenty games with lots of 'gameplay', like Empire Earth 2 and Stronghold 2, but somehow these games just aren't as fun as the original. I find myself FORCING myself to finish the game. With games like X-Com, I actually have to pry myself from the game.

Download.com charges now, so there's no more browsing through it's pages for decent games. Most freeware sites like GameHippo and HOTU notice that recent games are crap too and decided to support the indie game industry by giving excessively nice reviews to freeware/shareware games. In other words, these sites make garbage look like ambrosia.

So... anything for me to look forward to? If not, I'm just gonna have to start kliking again. I've already spent about 12 hours on MMF these two days, which is about my usual quota for 2 weeks.

The Click Community isn't dying. It's just that the game industry is getting better. Though the emphasis is on 'industry', not 'game'.

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess is going to be nice, I'm pretty sure.
If you like shooters you should wait for F.E.A.R.

Darwinia is a nice game.

I WAS looking forward to full throttle 2, but now it's cancelled. Most of you have no idea what that is, and that's probably why.

full throttle 2 and sam & max 2 are cancelled, probably because the point and click adventure games are turning less popular. I remember Grim Fandango, an excellent game from start to finish, but it didnt become that popular. I think Lucas Arts are afraid of making thoose kind of games now.

Its a shame that they cancelled the sam and max 2 and full throttle 2, I hope this doesn't mean that there won't be another monkey island game

I'm looking forward to the games in the next few months though, especially FEAR and The Elder Scrolls Oblivion (shaping up to be the ultimate single plaer rpg imo).

If your after something new and more original, you could check out 'Spore' by Will Wright or black and White 2.

Doom 3 was brilliant. I had to pry myself from that one.

It wasn't just a shooter- it had RPG elements to it that made it more interesting then the previous installments.

And I'm ashamed of this one, but I have always like the Harry Potter games even though they're easy and short. I still can't figure out what I like about them.

Sam and Max 2's cancellation still sucks big time. Was the Full Throttle 2 you were referring to the sellout action game? Did you know that there was going to be a pure adventure game sequel to Full Throttle before Hell on Wheels was announced? http://www.mixnmojo.com/php/site/gamedb.php?gameid=116

If you liked Full Throttle, Day of the Tentacle, and Grim Fandango, check out Psychonauts. It's a funny psychic-themed platformer with good character development and strong psychological undertones by Tim Schafer, the brilliant madman behind those adventure games. www.psychonauts.com www.doublefine.com

In adventure games, the ex-Sam and Max 2 team has split from Lucasarts to form Telltale Games, which is currently working on an episodic adventure game based on Jeff Smith's Bone comic book series. http://www.telltalegames.com/bone_the_game

In indie games, Gish is a fun, innovative platformer where you play as a ball of tar. There's a realtime physics engine where you can change your physical characteristics to become sticky (to climb up walls or grab blocks), slick (to squeeze in tight spaces), or hard (to break through walls or crush enemies). http://www.chroniclogic.com/gish.htm

I tried out the F.E.A.R. demo, but somehow my computer that could handle Half Life 2 at medium detail requires it to scale down to Marathon (http://trilogyrelease.bungie.org/ )-level graphics before it becomes playable. This significantly lessens the impact of the game.

yeah I hope they optimize the FEAR engine before it's released, I can run hl2 and doom 3 on maximum settings but on FEAR I get an occasional pause and stutter- but I forgive it, it's shaping up to be such an awesome game.

Strange, the F.E.A.R. demo run totally fine in full detail on my PC, and I don't even have recommended specs for it. Doom 3 was fine for the most part, but the end boss was unplayable because the frame-rate went to slide-show like speeds.

Floating Head Santa is the best game ever!

Most of the new console games are crap. The old console games are gold though. Most of the time, I'm playing Genesis games like Vectorman, Rocketknight Adventures, Sonic, etc. I'm not saying all new games are crap though. The Ratchet and Clank series is pretty good and we can't forget DDR.

Just so you know, Sam And Max 2 was purchased by a german company, who will likely release it. If it ever gets an international release is another question all together. Unfortunately, no one has taken the Axe out of Full Throttle 2's back yet.

Of all the recent games I can think of, only Devil May Cry 3 has held my attention for any length of time. It almost takes inspiration from the gameplay of the original Doom in that you're just given hundreds of enemies to batter.

I do prefer my collection of DOS games, though. I rediscovered ZZT only this morning.

Shab, are you referring to Bad Brain? Because they didn't actually succeed in buying the rights to Sam and Max 2 from Lucasarts. Steve Purcell, the original creator of the characters now has legal rights to use Sam and Max again. There's a scan of a recent PC Zone article about the fiasco over at Mixnmojo: http://www.mixnmojo.com/galleries/gallery.php?gallery=269&image=3343&goback=http://www.mixnmojo.com/ . I didn't know that it was 90-freakin'-percent complete when it was canned.

I miss those adventure games. KQ6 was one of the best. But I guess people stopped buying them because you have to pay quite a bit for a game that doesn't have any replayability.

The FF series is rapidly going down ever since FF7 and so were the other game series.

Most U.S. mixes of DDR are pretty awful. The Japanese version of Extreme for PS2 had like 110 songs, but it was butchered down to 61 for the US release. The best home solution for DDR is Stepmania. I run my computer through my TV and sound-system, then hook up my dance-pad (mounted on 3/4 inch plywood and wrapped with plastic) via a USB adapter. I have every official song from every Japanease arcade mix, plus a folder of about 150 unofficial songs. There's literally thousands more user-made songs and steps to download. On a random note, this seems like as good of place as any to brag about B-ranking Max300 yesterday.

As for games I'm looking forward to:

The Legend of Zelda (cube)
Gunstar Super Heroes (gba)
Shining Force Neo (ps2)
Phantasy Star Universe (ps2/pc/?xbox360?)
Lost Odyssey (xbox360)
Perfect Dark Zero (xbox360)
Too Human (xbox360)
Sonic the Hedgehog (next-gen)
Afterburner (next-gen)
Nintendo Revolution + Games

Impressive. Our Max300 score-breakdowns are almost identical. I also took a screenshot the other day of my score on Sakura, as well as my score on Dokudenpa (user made track and steps, about 3:30 long).

I'm a slave to speed-mods. Try Sakura using C400 -- it makes it a piece of cake because the tempo-changes are never reflected in the rate the arrows ascend, only in their spacing. I play almost everything with a speed mod of some sort. My system is roughly as follows...

0 to 100 bpm: 3x
100 to 175 bpm: 2x
175 to 225 bpm: 1.5x
Over 225: 1x (or C400 for most 10-footers)

My friend Evan puts us both to shame by a mile though. He did this ridiculous run on Step-Mania about a month ago, where he tackled just about every 10-footer I had right in a row. His scores were (all within about a 30 minute time window):

dokudenpa - AA - 850 combo
max unlimited -- A
max 300 - B
legend o/ max - A
sakura - AA
paranoia survivor - A
bag -- AA (9 greats)
paranoia survivor max - C
