I hate MMORPGs. They're filled with people who spend their entire lives there leveling up their characters to levels impossible to obtain. Kinda loses the fun when you're just level 4 and a kid who's maxed out his char hands you one of his Ultimate Longswords of Demon and Random Monster slaying coz it slows him down.

1. Is that made with TGF?
2. Do not use Moo2, I reccomend you use moogame\click or a combination of the two.
3. Do you really want to tell everyone what you are doing (on your website), so they can easily replicate it?

Maybe you should read some more articles on online game development for MMF before undergoing a large project such as this. For basic connenction and movement, read Flava's latest three part series. As for movement, if everyone is sending co-ordinates every x seconds then your game will get very laggy very quickly. Use some sort of dead-reckoning system (invent your own, read up, whatever).

Andy,
Yeah, I know what your saying Andy, but for the moment we're just understanding the basics, as if Moo2 was the only available thing. We didn’t know about it when it first came out as we were not really into game making so were just jumping back to the past and working up to Moo Sock. MMF is something that myself and my cousin were talking about last night and I relies that it comes with all the extensions needed to make an MMORPG.

As for displaying my notes, hell yeah I think some information should be free especially as I am not intending on using 'THIS' game to earn cash I might as well let other people learn techniques from my trial and error. Plus, hopefully some guys can give input if they read my notes and suggest better ways for me to create certain things.

I will check out what you’ve suggested though, whose working on the ‘official’ TDC Game? It would be nice to see how far they’ve got as it looks like we’re going up against them. We’re determined!!

Muz,
I know exactly what you mean, I had been playing runescape during the days when a level 60 was extremely rare and rune was a myth. Now I’m sure Zezima has every skill to level 99 and every type of item possible to collect. So I have a lot of respect for what you’re saying, although can you not think of ways to overcome this problem? It wouldn’t be hard to keep the game broad with quests, sub games, and other modules. Such as not only do you get items but you get books for spells but you can only get for instance an Ice Spell from the Ice Book located at Ice Mountain, then you could mix spells, so ice and fire make water. Etc.

There are loads of ways to make MMORPG’s more enjoyable and less repetitive; the only thing is getting to the stage where you can do just that.
(I wish I didn’t say that 99% would say yes now…)

At the moment we’re developing still, we’ve managed to get information sending and receiving using Moo2 and MOS. I have taken into consideration Andy’s advice and myself and Kyza are planning on purchasing MMF. (Yes we haven’t yet!!).

Thanks guys,
Sean Cansdale.

(Edit: I have developed a great mathmatical grid movement engine which gives us perfect TGF movement, but its only 4 directional - I will read the guides though).

Leveling up in runescape wasn't that hard, 'cause there was autominers.

lol, without turning this into a discussion about runescape I remember when the Mods weren't strict and when they found a user using auto miner they would change their pick axe into a skirt and you would see users standing next to rocks putting a skirt on and off.. Those were the days when they encouraged repetitive strain injury by making you click the pick axe to use then the rocks to use it with.. Those were the best time of runescape.. The early years..

That site needs a bit of colour. Other than that, this is a VERY good idea. Just make sure people can become game moderators so they can throw out the n00bs. RuneScape has a lot and nothing is done about it.

Someone is welcome to develop it if they want. No bother to me, unless they do dodgy porn or something.

Think of a way to overcome it? I've been doing that for longer than you think .

Of course, none of them really work. Best way would be to put a cap on the amount of experience you can get in a day. After 3-4 or so hours of playing, you can no longer gain experience, but you can still socialize, get married, get divorced, whatever those people enjoy doing on MMORPGs besides gaining experience.

Most people would just stop playing and do something useful with their lives after they reach that cap, but that doesn't stop them from having fun the next day. In fact, it's more fun as they're not repeatedly bashing some things over and over again.

To make things even more fun, once you get to about level 20 or so, you can only gain experience 'manually', that is by doing quests set by the people who moderate the game. Quests are sent down via dreams when the player rests after drinking a quest potion or something. Or they could be sent by the mayor, king, an archmage or some important NPC.

These quests make you do things like slay evil dragons, build settlements that X players have to live in, find pieces of a powerful artifact which can be forged and you can keep, siege enemy settlements, defend your settlements from sieges, upgrade the defenses (walls, towers, militia, etc) of your home city, etc. Maybe you have to do social things like train noobs to certain levels and make them join the army. Anything that encourages the growth of the game. As reward, you get experience, items, positions in the upper class of society, a nice manor and land, etc. If you're good enough, you get statues, your name carved on signboards, etc.

Of course, this still means that people can level up really high, but the people who are really high level have actually contributed to the game, meaning that they deserved the level more than those people who spend all day killing everything in sight.

If you're making a game like this, I'm in . Even have a very unique combat system you could use.

I like the ideas man, I like them a lot. But I especially like the comment about high levels deserving to be high, its a true statement that the guys that get rewarded have no lives. I shale bare this all in mind, and a nice combat systen eh? I might be interested.

MMF arrived today, but I haven't had a chance to work on the development website (woooza.net) because it was my 21st birthday yesterday. However, I will be spending a hell of a lot of time over the next week setting up the project. Names names names is all I want at the moment, well that and skillz. So post away and let me know if you want to help out. I think we're going up against the offical DC game, but eh? Who cares as long as this project brings results!

Thanks guys,
Sean.

We already have a server and are looking at renting an external IP address for hosting, but theres a long way to go yet before we start thinking about that.
The users savefiles will be server side and encrypted of course.
Ez posted the Movement and Inventory engines we plan to use for the game. Should be accepted and up soon. Go check it out!
