Here's a collection of cars from the game I'm currently working on (a few I made a long while ago for something else actually). Unfortunately, it's very ambitious and will probably never be completed, but I thought I'd show them off now, and get some feedback - cars people would like to be able to drive etc. I'd be seriously impressed if anyone can actually tell what they're all meant to be though.
nope, not micro machines - that would be relatively do-able. i'm going for multiplayer online freeform racing game. think GTA but without the missions, weapons, carjacking, storyline etc - basically just racing (or chasing if playing as a cop) each other through a city for the money to buy new cars/upgrades. like i said, i think i've bitten off waaay more than i can chew...
Ah yes, that was the "something else" I was referring to. It was just going to be a straightforward racing game, but unfortunately my computer died shortly after that preview and I lost everything (it was only because I had posted the graphics online that I could recover them). That's why the colour schemes on all the rally cars are out of date. What I liked best about that game was the way it used all external maps (drawn in paint with each pixel representing a scenery tile - black=track, white=grass etc) and car graphics/data, and the car handling used actual 0-60, 30-70, topspeed, weight etc. That combined with the tiny car graphics, meant I (or anyone else) would have been able to make hundreds of realistically balanced cars and tracks without spending too long at all. Someday I'll probably revive that project too.
Anyway, I'm keeping backups this time around. It's actually going to be a lot simpler than my old game in many respects - I think it will have to be for it to work online.
Re. Renault Clio - That's what I wanted - car requests . I will try my hand at one (the 3.0L V6 would be cool), but like I said, don't get too excited incase I lose interest in the game.
Not sure about unlockable exactly (how does that work in an online game?), but I do like your idea of really random vehicles. Could maybe hide some in remote parts of the map or something. Always appreciate these kind of suggestions
Added a dragster, toyota tundra (huge tundra fun), stretch limo, and a sorry excuse for a clio (they're just too damn small). It's actually kind of addictive making these little cars - I'll never get round to working on the actual game...
No, these are not taken from GTA - they are all made from scratch, by me, for a game which will be based on GTA. My sprites are actually only half the size of GTA cars, which is why they're not as detailed/good.
Mr.James : Aren't you going to try my 10 Step Method? I'll give it a shot. It's going to be another tricky one because it's another small car, and it's an open top. Something big and square is a lot easier - like a Hummer.
Fenner: Lamborghini Diablo, supposed to be. Most beautiful cars ever made IMO (murcielagos and gallardos are sleeker but they just don't have the same "presence"). Could just as easily be a Countach though - I think by the time you make them this small they're going to look pretty similar from above.
I added a couple of cars (you might have to press refresh for them to show).
Lembi2001 : besides being really small and fiddly, the problem with bikes is that they'd really need leaning animations and probably their own kind of movement - the bikes in the early GTA games were pretty crappy to ride to be honest. You'd also have to deal with the rider falling off and stuff. Having said that, it's cool that they let you ride really fast between lanes of traffic and get to hard-to-reach places.
It will be kind of independent, in that they can face different directions, but it won't be very realistic - you won't be able to jack-knife, and I'm not sure how reversing will work. Also, the tank will probably have a rotating turret (it won't be able to shoot though), and the monster truck will have four wheel steering (because it would look lame if the wheels didn't turn).
I think I'll stop making more cars for the time being, and concentrate on the game mechanics. I'm going to be aiming for about 100 vehicle types in the final game though.
0-62mph (100kph) 3.6 seconds
0-100mph (160kph) 9.8 seconds
Standing ¼ mile 12.2 seconds
Top speed 155mph
(the supercharged version is quicker)
Admittedly, I'm biased because they're made in my village in cornwall. Vicki Butler-Henderson said it "mimicked the mating dance of a frenzied fly" which I think is a bad thing.
You brought back memories then with those cars. I remember constantly playing GTA with my mate, "goes n turns", we'd get five lives each with the cheats on and just go around shooting everything and getting chases. It's a much better game when you don't do the missions.
I just edited my sprites, so now they really do look ripped.
Neuro: that's so twisted, but not a bad idea actualy...
Norris: i totally agree - missions get really tedious. i'm not going to bother with them - you'll be able to play as a taxi driver, but that's mainly to give you something to do if noone else is online at the time, and as a kind of practice mode for new players until they get good enough to actually compete with others.
We used to do that too Noodle. *le sigh* got the GTA demo which was limited to about 5 minutes of playtime. I remember seeing the DMA logo and getting nostalgic over Lemmings. Now it's nostalgia over GTA. Gish!
