I sort agree, I really don't like the advisers and stuff. Personally though, I love the 3D rendered graphics... I think they are beautiful. I just wish it was more optimized, because it seems like it's always lagging in fresh area's and stuff. Like if I suddenly make a chance, I need to pause for a second to let the game catch up. I never use the disasters though, once you've seen 1 building use a fancy breaking up transition, you've pretty much seen them all.
I could never get my cities very big in SC4. The health/education adviser is really scary. She always has people going on strike and gets really mad. This game would be great if the schools had an "auto budget" option so that I wouldn't have to do so much micromanagement.

Hmm.. I see nothing objectionable or funny in this picture. I declare this post a combo breaker.
I don't really get what there is to understand though. You build zones, you keep people happy, and you don't spoil them. Remember, most of all your money income is purely taxes. You can't raise taxes extremely high because no one will give your city a second look for long, and demand will plummet. So what's the best way to get more from taxes? Add more residential. The twine between all 3 are very important, but residential is what's going to cause your industrial to sky rocket in demand, and once you've got a strong connection there, you'll start noticing demand for commercial. Commercials ideal place is generally along very busy roads and in town centers and such. Remember, demand raises and lowers based on how much you have, how well it's doing, and how high the taxes are. If you have a ton of unneeded zoning, demand is going to fall because theres no demand for more zones. Also if current zones are doing horrible, then no one will want to use the zones and demand will fall. And last but without a doubt not least, the higher the taxes are, the less likely people will care to develop, demand drops. So for example, if demand for High-Tech industry is starting to show up.. but just isn't quite there yet, and all you keep getting is dirty industry. Try raising taxes for dirty, this wont hurt to much the already developed, but more so stunt the growth of new, in favor of lowered taxed high tech.
These are only very general tips, the engine behind SimCity 4 is deliciously complex and I love it.
I usually us two cities. Once one of them is ready for high tech Industry, I raise the tax on dirty industry two 20%. The neighboring city provides the power and waist disposal. It's really a great game. There's a lot of strategy, especially in the transportation network.
Back on the old Sim City 3k I had a city named after where I live. Damn thing was incredible, had to flatten hills to free up space! ever square was used. Think I had a RCT1 map that used every square up too.
Damn I miss those games. Anyone know if they work in XP?

I don't see why they wouldn't. I still have no problem playing all these older games on Vista, so they should work on XP too.
I'm looking forward to http://www.cuplanet.com/ -- I really hope it would get finished some day, looks very promising. For me SC 4 became more enjoyable when I got the add-on pack and thus the missions. Then again after a while the missions did get very boring and didn't make game's life span that much longer. A good city simulation preferably with an extensive control over the public transport networks would be a winner in my books (got frustrated with Mobility, too, because of its many limitations)
I even followed tutorials on SC4 and still my city would be losing money. I don't understand it at all.
Too hard. HM!
Whaat? SC4 is the easiest of all the SimCities, IMHO. The only difficulty is in making a perfect city. If you don't want to lose money, don't make police, hospitals, fire depts, schools, etc. Use coal plants.
Alternatively, if you really don't want a challenge, make a neighboring city to stuff all the dirty industries and power plants, then connect it to your residential city.
Oh, I designed a few cities for my futuristic-style game. I actually took a map from one of my old fantasy games (too bad SC4 didn't have deserts and swamps) and built a nice city using the old fantasy cities.. the 'forge city' evolved nicely into the industrial capital in SC4, all those 'elven villages' became farming places. The only problem was doing the capital city. It was designed to be this elite place with an oppressive police force and stuff, which wasn't the hard part. The hard part was trying to simulate a 'walled castle' in SC4, which I did with only railroads. SC4 should have walls and castles, a lot like some of the medieval towns in Germany and Europe.
Not sure where I put that map, I did it about 4 years ago, backed it up somewhere before formatting my comp. It was good fun

Hey, what's wrong with the Sims? If you play it the way it's not supposed to be played, it's good fun. In the Sims 2, I made a castle on top of a hill, with a rich criminal mastermind who makes self-replicating robot slaves who even 'forced' the city mayor to work in his evil robot factory. Without cheating
My lazy-*** brother was even more amusing. He and my little sis both created a character in the same house. My sis was obsessed with money (like IRL) and took jobs since the start of the game. My bro wanted to hang around before he got a job, so he bought a TV, computer, etc (using the girl's hard earned money), but was never happy enough to get a job. He messed up the sinks and showers and never cleaned the dishes, telling my sis's character to do it. Then he cooked (badly), ate rotten food and got sick. He even left all the unwashed dishes outside the room because 'they were making the room ugly' (something he also does IRL). He never did get a job. My sis's character remained happy throughout the game despite being bullied. Lol, I use that story to remind him everytime that if he just cleaned his own dishes, he'd be happier and more girls would like him
