I have no idea what the actual release dates were over in the UK, but would it be remotely possible that you guys got the newer model first? Or rather, you bought it when the newer model was out, in which case, you shouldn't get a RRoD at all.
MS have fixed the RRoD problem. Has Nintendo fixed the Pixels of Death problem? (ie you leave the console in standby with WiiConnect24 on for too long and it overheats the gpu, showing random stuck pixels)

Eh I've had my Wii since Jan 07 and Wii Connect 24 is always on, was even on when we went on holiday for 3 weeks and it's ok infact none of my friends, RL and online have had this (unlike the RRoD). They must only offer free extended warranties when it's a big problem.
Can't say my Wii has ever done this. You should call Nintendo and they'll probably repalce your console. They'll also restore your VC games to the new console, if you have bought any.
Yes. The RROD problem was there. At first MS wasn't taking responsibility for it, charging people for repairs for consoles broken 90 days after purchase. Then they introduced a 3 year warranty for all RROD errors. And last year, they put out the Falcon revision, which brought down the failure rate to reasonable levels. So people who buy a new 360 will most likely not have any RROD issues, people who have old 360s who get RROD can have theirs replaced thanks to the extended warranty. Problem fixed I would say.
My friend's Wii got the Pixels of Death. He sends it to Nintendo, then get a new console... with a broken disc drive. Apparantly his VC games ARE NOT restored. So that's quite a few pounds down the drain for him.
There are quite a few videos of glitched Wiis on youtube, so I wouldn't call it just "a few consoles" either.
