Dwarf Fortress can be quite sad too. In no other game can you see a baby who's mother got killed by a cave-in crawling around to look at food with permanent brain damage caused by the cave-in.

Actually when I played through FF7 that bit where whatsherface dies almost got me. I knew it was coming up but still. Ruined by that boss battle right after it though :/
And the Mario Galaxy books
Muz... That just sounds more horrifying than boo-hoo sad
omg I just remembered something. Aged 6 I got enraged during a game of lemmings on my family's first PC. I smacked the keyboard and the monitor would only display lines of colours. My dad grounded me
Mario Galaxy because at the end I thought all the little star things were dying, but I just wasn't watching properly.
Seriously though all I can remember is Zelda: Majora's Mask. That game is so dark and when your spending your time on all the important "side quests" helping out and getting to know the towns folk, you watch them going about their business as the three days pass. If you fail then on the third day they are understandably miserable, using Anju as an example here, she never got to see her fiance before they were all crushed by the moon. The music that plays in the final 5 minutes is so sad, everyone you talk to is upset or in a panic, it's really horrible to see.
I think Majora's Mask is possibly THE most upsetting game in video game history. Great to play though.

FFX, I hated the actual gameplay but I'm kinda a sap for sad endings.

Lol, dating sim. I didn't cry over the ending of Betrayal at Krondor either, it was quite good.. but I was a bit sad that such an epic game was over. You could really get attached to the characters in BaK.

Majora's Mask creeps me out. O_O Right now in that game I have 2:30 minutes to go all the way back in the water dungeon and defeat the giant fish. Needless to say I haven't done it yet. >_>
Omg.. Ive just realised there was actually a game that brought a tear to my eye- Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Ring of Fates for DS. There's an emotional part between the two main kids in it after their father is killed T_T Otherwise I don't actually like the game much, lol.

Hi again James! Heh, that's funny because the battle with Jenova stuck with me more than the cutscene before it. Playing her theme throughout the battle is probably what did it.
You have to care about the characters through good dialogue before the game can get to you. In fact it's been a while since I actually gave a crap about the characters in a game. Full Throttle, Half Life 2: Episode Whatever, Phoenix Wright, Actraiser (!?).. Honestly I think that's where the list ends for me. Oh, and Streetwise.
I cried when I finished Xenogears. I guess it was a combination of frustration, satisfaction and loss.
edit: Actually, I cried several times through the game.
I got really attached to the characters in Tales of Phantasia for the GBA, that's still on eof the best games I've ever played. I was sad when it ended but I didn't cry...
Not so much a game, but there's a piece of music in Revenge of the Shinobi for Mega Drive called "My Lover" and for some reason when I was about 7 or 8 that piece of music used to make me cry. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=z6PUcGIU-0U is the link if you're interested. I've since found out that that music is if you win(!)
Wait, I lied. Many a time my projects have caused a tear to come to my eye. (Sometimes from banging my head against the keyboard from an annoying bug, sometimes I skip that step.)

Fable 2 made me sad. I had to make people suffer, kill my friends, and kick my dog. Not because I wanted to, but because it was for the greater good of the world. Their deaths shall not be in vain! ...I wonder if they left any property behind in Bowerstone...
I think FF6 made me cry, but I'm not sure. There was a lot of tragedy, so it's plausible.
haha, i remember playing fatal fury as a kid on genesis. It used to be me, my brother and my cool uncle. We used to have team matches and whoever lost would give up the controller. Me and my brother were so addicted to the game that we cried when we lost Well, mostly my brother since I was awesome with Kim
Oh and the ending to Links Awakening.
That game was so effin immense and the music made it. As the world fades away and the Windfish ballad is played and builds up and up... Incredible stuff, and just 4 tones of gray and 4 channels. What Nintendo did with that low tech was incredible
First time around in Halo 3, was playing with a friend of mine. The closest I came was chills and goosebumps... but tears are usually reserved for movies. I've yet to see a good tear jerking game. The Myst series would have had some potential in that field, but unfortunately a lot of it was too corny to get emotional over. (Except when reading the books by yourself... but that's not really a game.)

I think that gave me the record of standing still the longest in a sonic game.:/
heh, i used to just jump on it and get enough momentum on it to pass.
Yeah I used to hate that sodding part. When I was young and played through Sonic 3 a lot, I used to always get stuck for ages on that bit, only managing to get through when I eventually managed to time jumping up and down to make the thing drop down enough to get through the gap. It wasn't til playing Sonic 3 a couple of years ago that I found out you can just press up and down in time with the bobbing and it's a piece of piss, drops in about 5 seconds! I could've saved a lot of anger in my childhood if I figured that out back then.
Behind the Lines expansion for operation Flashpoint. I didn't think it was possible to make such DULL missions for OFP then to SELL them. I thought it was an official expansion...
Call of Juarez might have made me accidentally cry at the end, just because I didn't expect a game to include such a great (if cliched) story. And a level which includes shooting rabbits. And the ultimate bad ass old man who needs to be saved by the person he's been trying to kill all the way through the game!
In fact, I'm going to have to review this game some more because it left such a mark on me.
