Everyone does a breakout game eventually. It's like death and taxes. However, this one - which is my fifth production for the site - has a difference. 20 years after the Space Invaders were defeated, a wormhole opened in the once peaceful world of Breakout, and now it's up to Paddle to defend the world from the Breakout Invaders!
Well, maybe writing a plot for a breakout game's a bit of a mistake. Anyway, this Breakout game combines the standard ball movement with custom detectors to create an improved ball system - you won't have to mindlessly bat the ball around hoping it might just hit that last brick here. Additionally, you can pick up weapons to more efficiently destroy the blocks and the UFOs.
Everything is explained in the Help within the game, but here are the basic controls:
Mouse left/right: Move paddle
Left Mouse Button: Fire weapon
Right Mouse Button: Launch ball/Detonate Scatter Bomb
Music is taken from all over the place, and is credited within the game (there are even some of my own in there somewhere, which are MIDI versions of some of my songs at http://www.modarchive.com/artists/wong_chung_bang if that isn't too blatant a plug for you). Graphics are entirely original... all right, apart from the explosions.
A facility for level editing is provided, via an easy to use system that involves editing the INI file of the game. It took me ages to get that right, you know.
Thanks again to Steve Harris for hosting, and thanks to another completely different Steve Harris for a great new album.
UPDATE: I knew I'd forget to include _something_ in the ZIP. The LCD-like font for the high score table can be found here: http://homepages.ihug.co.nz/~nm156/lcd_font.zip
