This is my entry for the spriteset competition that has been going on for a while (long past its original intended timeframe) at the Vcade. The challenge was to create any sort of game possible, so long as it used only the graphics provided ( http://www.geocities.com/f1fth/compo-sprites.jpg ), and ended up a Vitalized file.

In Ranger Tank, you control a tank with a sort of a scissor-lift built into it, which you can use to quickly maneuver the tank out of danger. The game plays a little like a shoot-em-up and a little like a platformer. It's only got four levels, but it gets fairly tough before the game is done.

The lift takes a little getting used to, but the workings of it all are explained within the tutorial. And the link goes to the game's Vcade page, so you'll need Vitalize installed to play it.

I can't play this game.

The Jump is too awful.

This game is technically great. I can't imagine many people using the given sprites in a more dynamic way than this. Unless that guy Fifth enters the compet.....oh

Jumping was tricky at first but I found it easier to hold the right mouse button and push up with the mouse. MBK, zero stars for this is totally unjustified and you're an idiot.

Is there an exe version anywhere? I find ~~Vitalise~~ Vitalize games hard to escape when they hide the mouse pointer.

MBK, you are acting like a real jerk. This game has awesome engine, and all you can do is give it a 0 because you didn't want to learn to use the controls?! Also, even if you don't want to learn how to jump, it doesn't still let you give 0 stars. You see, there's more things that matter than just the thing if the game is made for your brain size. Please stop acting so lamely, I start to wonder if you're a fake account :/

By myself I enjoyed this game a lot! The engine is really well done, and I got used to the jumping method quite fast. I'd say that you should create another version after the competition with graphics that are as good as the engine. Then this game would rock totally!

WOW this game rocks!!!
i like the gameplay very much the effects when you shoot something the movement of the tank is awesome it looks like every single part moves diffent while driving up and down.
liked the music..and sound effects
it took me awhile to get used to the jumping controls but after a few minutes i got the hang of it
i didn't complete it yet but sure will try

Heh, thanks!

Sorry you didn't like the jumping, MBK. The up-then-down method came from the idea of using the mouse for the lift, but people thought that it was too weird to move with the arrows and lift with the mouse, and so I added the more friendly (but less fun) control scheme of move with the arrows, aim with the mouse... and that made the jumping awkward.
But I'd have though the double-tap up to jump would be a simple enough solution for that... ah, well...

Nim, you can pause the game and get your mouse control back by pressing Space.

Ranger Tank is my rival in the V-cade competition.
Bad for me... this game rocks!!

My advice is to not give up the game just because you don't like the jump system.
I don't like it too, but I garantee that the game is still very playable and very good looking

As they said - innovative. I'm not a huge fan of the graphics though, but still - a good game.

4 stars, but only because of the hideous jumping... although the jumping had its charm, it still totally sucked... otherwise i'm extremely impressed!

Oh man, this game is a bit of a blast from the past!
So, I'm afraid I never exported an EXE file of the completely finished game, and my current installed version of MMF doesn't play the source file perfectly (there's one part where you just fall through the floor), so the actual finished game is kind of lost.

BUT I do have a stand-alone version that I put together late in the game's development that should be MOSTLY complete. There are a few differences, though:
- It doesn't have the finished soundtrack, so all the songs are just ripped from Gradius 3
- The middle mouse button doesn't work, so you need to use TAB to launch bombs
- There's no high score list
- A few little bits of polish are missing
