For the Gamebuilder Happy Halloween Compo

Remember Friday the 13th the game? Remember how that sucked? Well we're here to kind of change that a bit.

In Halloween Candy, you and up to 4 of your friends are trapped in Dr. Kijek's Manor, Manor VonKillHouseDeathLiveWont. You must evade Dr. Kijek because he says he's after your "Halloween Candy".

How To Play: The game is basically a game of hide and seek and contains two modes of play. The first is titled "The more the merrier". In this mode the longer you go without "loosing your halloween candy", the more points you get, on top of that, your points are multiplied by however many of your friends are still around. In this mode you are allowed to select any character in play at anytime.

The second mode is called "Every Man For Themself". In this mode, the player that stays the longest wins the game, and can continue to go until he is captured by Dr. Kijek.

On top of this there is also a bonus game of Halloween Tag, played much like freeze tag that the players can partake in. When Dr. Kijek catches the characters in this mode, he turns them into pumpkins, and they stay that way until another player touches them.

Use WSAD to move, shift to run and press E to hide. In "The More the Merrier" you can switch players by pressing the 1-5 keys. In spectate mode (weather you choose it or you die in "Every Man For Themself") You can use the 1-5 keys to zoom to a player or press 7 to move the screen with the mouse.

Ok, I played the game.

-You need to have some sort of tutorial or something to let the player know what they are supposed to do. I fumbled around for 5 minutes just trying to start a normal game!
-The text on the menu is almost unreadable, I couldn't figure out what I was supposed to click, chill out on the bevel effects.
-This could really use some music
-The voice overs were done rather badly, voice overs are cool, but only if they are done right.

Besides all those points the game was pretty fun, and the in-game graphics were well put-together.

I also think this game could benefit from an online mode.

Yeah I wanted to do some kind of tutorial, but my expirience with MMF2 isn't that great, I'm lucky I fixed most of the bugs that I could. I tried to explain most of this on this download page, but I guess if you don't read it you don't know.

I had nothing to do with the menu text, and I didn't have time to really fix it, but yeah, I hear you. In my opinion, the game should've been 640x480, but appearantly MMF2 had a hard time of taking the AI path system on resolution higher than 320x240.

Aww come on man, haven't you ever played a horror game before? It's all about the ambiance. Of course that's a cop out and it really could've used some creepy cello based music, although my equipment really isn't that sophisticated.

The voice overs are really a dissapointment, that is due to the fact that my dog chewed up my mic cord and no matter how many times I spliced it, the mic would always seem to malfunction, so we took what we got.

I really wanted to have multiplayer (in fact this game was set up for that) and an online scoreboard, but it kind of sucks when your only programmer decides to leave towards the end, and even then she really wasn't that great at it (I don't know if you ran into the "Stuck In Limbo Glitch"). And without that the game really does suffer a bit.

Thank you so much for your feedback, you brought up some great points (although I do feel 2 out of 5 stars is kind of harsh for a game you described as "pretty fun"). I'm planning on getting together a more sophisticated version of this later down the line, because I do feel it is a great concept that could be vastly improved.

Oh but I do however have to take credit for the credits page, that was my bad.

I liked the game play idea and you executed it well, the graphics were all very good and I liked watching the other people also running around the house. The lighting effects also looked pretty. I can see you took time to create the "Files" section (help/info?) and fill in some story on the characters and what the game is about, which is good, but you didn't provide any actual instructions on what the controls were. Of course you wrote them here on the download page but it should be included in the game or in a readme.txt file or something, instead of relying on the internet to find out controls/what to do there should be a point of reference in the game or included with the download. Did it really need a spectate feature? I'm sure players would much rather play this game than watch.

I always thought it was kind of fun to sit back and watch the AI control the game. With the old Smackdown games, me and some friends attempted to create our own wrestling show and let the Computer decide the outcome of each match, we then realized it was a terrible idea because those games give wrestling the image of "non-scripted" which it sure as hell isn't, so it really wasn't much fun to watch, although I like the idea. Plus it was very simple to impliment given the AI system.

I'm not sure if I really agree with the in game tutorial though, I've played many games that do not even have a list of controls anywhere, that never stopped me from liking them. I enjoy trying to find my own way to make things work, but I guess to each his own. I'll make sure to include it in my following games. Thanks for the feedback!

It can be an inconvenience for a player to rely on the internet to find the download page again or hit every key on the keyboard to see if it does something. Of course it is not a reason to actually dislike a game, but it's nice to put things like that in for the player.

Looking forward to seeing your future games.

I agree with UrbanMonk and jthongbai that some ingame information or help would be nice. I get frustrated pretty fast if I have to try every possible key on the keyboard to find out the controls (besides, the WASD control scheme was kinda dumb since you practically don't have to use mouse...).

After finding the right keys the second problem was that I didn't have any clue what to do. After looking the description I faced the third problem: the game was awfully boring! (I would have liked to see some weapons, excitement and gore...)

Despite of all the flaws the game has pretty neat graphics, sounds and music. Looking forward to see your next creation!

"I faced the third problem: the game was awfully boring! (I would have liked to see some weapons, excitement and gore...)"

That's not the point. 1) The game was for a "Happy Halloween" Competition, so therefore I had to tone down the gore. 2) The point of the game is to not have weapons, you don't need weapons for a game to be exciting. I'm trying to create something new here, please leave ignorant comments like that out of it. No offence, but I appreciate the fact that you said you are looking forward to my next game, but it's hard to accept when you basically just said "Your game sucks because it's not an action game".

I understand what everyone is talking about, but seriously I think it's a bit tired. The point of the game is VERY simple, don't let the guy catch you, and hide when you have the chance. It's not rocket science. My Wife was able to figure out the game and she doesn't even play video games, and about all she knew was the controls (which I must say again are CLEARLY in bold letters here, the point is not that the game comes with it, but it's still there. I apologize for not including it, but It's just a tad bit frustrating when some people can't take the time to read before they jam on the download button. It definatly makes me think that the people here really do not appreciate other little things that go into a game that really make it stand out. For instance, jthongbai has been the only person so far to even mention the files page).

I'm not trying to be an ass, I really am not. But please just try to understand how very frustrating it is to spend a whole month of staring at a computer screen to have people base their opinion of something on slight flaws.

I'd also like to point out the Team Projects forum, and how the request for playtesters went for a week without one single response. Those issues could have been avoided, and I realize that that's not your responsibility, but I clearly did not have ANYONE for this part, and if you read that post and want to complain about controls and how to play (which IS in the files section), then don't.

Sorry for spilling my guts here, but that's just how I feel. I'm not looking to spark a flame war or anything like that, so lets just leave it at that.

Sorry if you understood my feedback wrong but I do like also games other than action games... The point is that waiting the bad guy to appear for like three minutes is a tad too much especially when you don't have a slightest idea what to do, where he comes or you don't even see him (at least I didn't). Although being a simple game, I just didn't get the idea especially when the friendly AIs just walked around without even hiding (and we're talking about a hide and seek game here...). On top of that the description of the first game mode is unreadable.

Why did you favorite your own game?

That's a little better, thank you so much for explaining it like that, it makes me feel a bit better.

That's where playtesting comes in. I could've fixed the frequency of friendly and killer hiding with a simple values change, and the length of the killers hiding the same way.

Would it help if I released an update?

"Why did you favorite your own game?"

Why wouldn't I? I'm not ashamed to take pride in my work.

Never act like anything you make is good. Even if it is, deny it. Trust me.

I'll be modest when it comes to stuff I don't care about. I want everyone to know that I enjoy what I do. I'm not saying it's the greatest game in the world, but I do have the feeling it's going to be extremly underrated based on a few "get over it" flaws.

I shall review the game tomorrow! I would do it now but it said i cant review any more games today, lol!

I made a honest review, hope you appreciate the constructive feedback, keep working on this one!
