I remember mario kart was reviewed in a dutch gaming mag when it came out and only got a 6 out of 10. Everybody freaked out. I think it's a cool game and it's alot of fun to play, but some parts totally don't make sense, like you can't jump over obstacles while all the others can.
Mario Kart were pretty good for a bit, but the gameplay is a bit samey. The battle mode extends it's lifetime a bit, but I do agree Mario Kart shouldn't be up there with Mario World or Donkey Kong as the best of SNES.
Commercial wise I think Halo was actually not over hyped or over rated but Halo 2 most definitely was. Doom 3 was over rated and over hyped but it was actually an ok game. CS:S was nothing special but I never really expected it to be. When I first played Ocarina of time I actually thought why on Earth did people like it, I especially dislike people who call the Zelda series RPGs, they are not RPGs, they are third person action/adventure games. Games like The Elder Scrolls series and Might and Magic are RPGs. But thats just my opinion, I was never too keen on Zelda when I played it.
I can't think of an overrated klik game. ED was for a long time the game to aspire to. It has flaws, but it's also hard to argue with the best when there's not all that much competition. When it comes to the overhyped games that suck (MSD, anything by jay ever) nobody's under any illusions.
Commercial games I'd say the Halo series wins hands down. It's an above-average console FPS. Not a fantastic FPS or a great game. Someone get these xbox kids a PC.

I'd like to step up to defend Halo here. Halo does nothing new, but all the stuff it does have is spot on. The vehicles were fun to drive. The story was intriguing. The protagonist was decent. The AI was excellent, both friendly and enemy. The outdoor levels were expansive and atmospheric (I'll agree that the indoor levels were boring and repetitive). The multiplayer was amazingly fun; I spent countless hours playing friends on the Xbox and online on the PC. The graphics and physics were above-par for the time. From what I've played of Halo 2, it took that formula and improved on all the parts of it, retaining the same feel yet adding plenty whilst still somehow failing to break the mould.
Of course both games were hyped. Halo was The One Good Launch Title for the Xbox. Clearly Microsoft are going to hype their best (some might say only decent) game. But that in no way makes it a bad game, and the sequel was a hit on its own merits as much as the hype machine (though there's no denying that helped). Don't let the hype blind you from a quality game.
I've played Halo quite a bit actually, in my mind though, it's grouped in with Quake 2 and the hundreds of other FPS's that came out at that time. The only one that stuck out in my mind at that time was SiN; but even that wasn't a great FPS, merely a good one.
My vote for best FPS's are still System Shock 2 (PC) and Timesplitters 2 (Console).
I hate DKC cause it's another generic platformer, Mario 3 had better gameplay. Prerendered graphics didn't mean anything to me then, and still doesn't today. DKC(1,2,and 3) are very subpar Nintendo games IMO.
Heh I wondered if this topic would return to bite me in the backside. I agree that MSD is over-rated (although at the time I was just pleased to finish a game, and perhaps took it out on some people)
Halo
Timesplitters 2
Manhunt
Mario Kart: Double Dash
Yoshi: Touch And Go
Doom 3
Nintendogs
Other over-rated klik games (IMO):
Eternal Daughter
Milber 2
Commando
Scurvy Sanchez (the entire series)
Neonair Racing. Definately.
Super Bubble Blob
Tango Strike
The Spirit Engine was a little over-rated (sorry Mark!)
Air Pop Neo
Super Awesome Adventure Extreme (don't know if anyone remembers that)
In The Pit. Definately.
Naimistath
Klik: Eternal Daughter (Insanely boring game, if you ask me, which you do)
Commercial: King Kong (Didn't get that über-high ratings, but... anything better than 5 is overrating this super repetetive crap)
Heh; I'm not really sure if you could call TS2 overrated; most of it's rating sucked (6-7 range) when it got reviewed. TS 3 was definately overrated though.
I only rant and rave about it because I havn't found a faster FPS for consoles yet. (Yes, I'm away you can crank up UT to like 200% gamespeed [which I've done] in the PC version.)

I remember the bad review (Was it from Power Unlimited, Hayo? I can't remember which magazine) Anyway, i found that review well deserved, all other magazines gave Mario Kart a high ratings, and I really thought it would be a good game. Man, was I dissapointed when I played it. So boring and repetitive ~_~ Everyone was just kissing up Nintendo and only Power Unlimited was being fair and told the truth. And everybody disagrees with me of course . Oh well, just my opinion I guess.
