In a homage to Heart Break Kids "Best Games" post, which do you think are the most over-rated games? Not the worst games as such, but the ones which grabbed high scores and you felt that they weren't deserved. Vote for ONE klik game and ONE commercial game. And try not to turn this thread into any personal attacks.
I like Carmageddon, it's not exactly sophisticated entertainment but it's a bit of a laugh.
I think Halo's vastly overrated. That is, I'm intrigued by the plot and can see why people like it, but it just seems slow and awkward compared to many other FPSsesses.
I hate SatanSam for one reason and one reason alone; instead of giving me more control over my character, it took it away. That jump shot is a perfect example.
Eternal Daughter is an absolutely beatiful game, but I just never found it that fun. It's impressive, but certainly isn't the end-all Klik game that everyone treats it as.
Oblivion is just Morrowind with a new coat of pain, with all the same problems of it's predecessor. There is no style to the art direction at all, and the graphics aren't even that great from a purely technical perspective. The combat is boring, the storyline is cliche, and the load times are ridiculous.
Counterstrike was, and is still overrated as hell. Plus I've never liked those kind of games.
Most overrated klik game? There's loads. Almost all games except the really crappy ones. But I'd say Eternal Daughter is fairly overrated. Also, I never understood what people saw in any of the Fishhead Games? (And Spiderhead whatever). Also MIG2s games are just a little overrated.
"Also, I never understood what people saw in any of the Fishhead Games? (And Spiderhead whatever)"
People only saw something in Fishhead 3, the other ones were thankfully hardly noticed (most of them were made in klik&play). Spiderhead is a great game and is not connected to Fishhead in any way.
What I don't like about the konaMIG games is that there is nothing original about them. Lost valley had ripped gfx than didn't even go together, the other games have original gfx that look like they were traced with bad shading. The actual coding is great, but the games look like faded versions of neo geo classics. It's like fangames made by a pro.
Sorry Hayo, I didn't mean Fishhead totally sucked. It was a good game, the third part. But as for the topic, it got just a little overrated. No hard feelings. It's probably better than any game I've ever made. I was in a really bad mood when I wrote the reply, and Fishhead got to be the victim. Lame excuse to not stand for me opinions, but it's true.
Just for the record, I do think Fishhead 3 was very overrated..but I already said that
As for Windwaker, I do agree that game was a bit overrated (game of the year and all). It's a great and lovely game but it's just too short. It needs 2 extra dungeons (same for minish cap).

Klik, probably Eternal Daughter. Impressive technically and graphically but boring to play. Commercial, I'm not sure. I've never bought I game I didn't read positive reviews for and go on to find crap. Doom 3 was hyped and turned out shit, though, if that counts.
I remember mario kart was reviewed in a dutch gaming mag when it came out and only got a 6 out of 10. Everybody freaked out. I think it's a cool game and it's alot of fun to play, but some parts totally don't make sense, like you can't jump over obstacles while all the others can.
Mario Kart were pretty good for a bit, but the gameplay is a bit samey. The battle mode extends it's lifetime a bit, but I do agree Mario Kart shouldn't be up there with Mario World or Donkey Kong as the best of SNES.
Commercial wise I think Halo was actually not over hyped or over rated but Halo 2 most definitely was. Doom 3 was over rated and over hyped but it was actually an ok game. CS:S was nothing special but I never really expected it to be. When I first played Ocarina of time I actually thought why on Earth did people like it, I especially dislike people who call the Zelda series RPGs, they are not RPGs, they are third person action/adventure games. Games like The Elder Scrolls series and Might and Magic are RPGs. But thats just my opinion, I was never too keen on Zelda when I played it.
I can't think of an overrated klik game. ED was for a long time the game to aspire to. It has flaws, but it's also hard to argue with the best when there's not all that much competition. When it comes to the overhyped games that suck (MSD, anything by jay ever) nobody's under any illusions.
Commercial games I'd say the Halo series wins hands down. It's an above-average console FPS. Not a fantastic FPS or a great game. Someone get these xbox kids a PC.

I'd like to step up to defend Halo here. Halo does nothing new, but all the stuff it does have is spot on. The vehicles were fun to drive. The story was intriguing. The protagonist was decent. The AI was excellent, both friendly and enemy. The outdoor levels were expansive and atmospheric (I'll agree that the indoor levels were boring and repetitive). The multiplayer was amazingly fun; I spent countless hours playing friends on the Xbox and online on the PC. The graphics and physics were above-par for the time. From what I've played of Halo 2, it took that formula and improved on all the parts of it, retaining the same feel yet adding plenty whilst still somehow failing to break the mould.
Of course both games were hyped. Halo was The One Good Launch Title for the Xbox. Clearly Microsoft are going to hype their best (some might say only decent) game. But that in no way makes it a bad game, and the sequel was a hit on its own merits as much as the hype machine (though there's no denying that helped). Don't let the hype blind you from a quality game.
I've played Halo quite a bit actually, in my mind though, it's grouped in with Quake 2 and the hundreds of other FPS's that came out at that time. The only one that stuck out in my mind at that time was SiN; but even that wasn't a great FPS, merely a good one.
My vote for best FPS's are still System Shock 2 (PC) and Timesplitters 2 (Console).
I hate DKC cause it's another generic platformer, Mario 3 had better gameplay. Prerendered graphics didn't mean anything to me then, and still doesn't today. DKC(1,2,and 3) are very subpar Nintendo games IMO.
Heh I wondered if this topic would return to bite me in the backside. I agree that MSD is over-rated (although at the time I was just pleased to finish a game, and perhaps took it out on some people)
Halo
Timesplitters 2
Manhunt
Mario Kart: Double Dash
Yoshi: Touch And Go
Doom 3
Nintendogs
Other over-rated klik games (IMO):
Eternal Daughter
Milber 2
Commando
Scurvy Sanchez (the entire series)
Neonair Racing. Definately.
Super Bubble Blob
Tango Strike
The Spirit Engine was a little over-rated (sorry Mark!)
Air Pop Neo
Super Awesome Adventure Extreme (don't know if anyone remembers that)
In The Pit. Definately.
Naimistath
Klik: Eternal Daughter (Insanely boring game, if you ask me, which you do)
Commercial: King Kong (Didn't get that über-high ratings, but... anything better than 5 is overrating this super repetetive crap)
Heh; I'm not really sure if you could call TS2 overrated; most of it's rating sucked (6-7 range) when it got reviewed. TS 3 was definately overrated though.
I only rant and rave about it because I havn't found a faster FPS for consoles yet. (Yes, I'm away you can crank up UT to like 200% gamespeed [which I've done] in the PC version.)
I remember mario kart was reviewed in a dutch gaming mag when it came out and only got a 6 out of 10. Everybody freaked out. I think it's a cool game and it's alot of fun to play, but some parts totally don't make sense, like you can't jump over obstacles while all the others can.
I remember the bad review (Was it from Power Unlimited, Hayo? I can't remember which magazine) Anyway, i found that review well deserved, all other magazines gave Mario Kart a high ratings, and I really thought it would be a good game. Man, was I dissapointed when I played it. So boring and repetitive ~_~ Everyone was just kissing up Nintendo and only Power Unlimited was being fair and told the truth. And everybody disagrees with me of course . Oh well, just my opinion I guess.
Heh, I only ever really played the first one when tt first, first came out for PC. Wasn't too impressed. I tried playing some other incarnations of it, but they were even worse.
Hows Legend or whatever? I actually heard that one was a decent game.
HALO:Combat Evolved is certainly not an over rated game & is definately better than an average shooter. It gives that X-Feel which makes it more superior than any other shooter in this world.

Klik with the kid!
DaVince This fool just HAD to have a custom rating
HBK - Halo is just another shooter. I agree it's well made, but it's just another shooter. My personal favorite Timesplitters is just another shooter (though even more generic, but in a good way).
List of shooter equal to or greater than Halo (IMO)
Red Faction (Not 2, 2 sucked bad)
SiN (PC)
Quake 2
System Shock 2
Thief (1-3)
Dues Ex (I haven't played 2 yet, but if the first was any indication, it's great)
Robotech: Invasion (This one is actually a bit less than Halo, but still fun)
Half-Life (haven't played 2)
Voyager: Elite Force (1+2)
YPOD (Your path of Destruction, a Doom-mod for the first Quake; get the remake, the original is really rough)
Craps, I'm an old man!

Fine Garbage since 2003.
CURRENT PROJECT:
-Paying off a massive amount of debt in college loans.
-Working in television.
Klik: Lost valley, the game is about as impressive as my beard.
Commercial: Oblivion... all the critics are whining on about how great the graphics are... but they're not that great; HDR maketh not good graphics, nor do noisy textures. Also it runs like a 50 stone woman with two broken ankles, pushing a 7 seater buggy with the handbrake on (unless you have a souped up PC).

JC Denton: "I know your UNATCO killphrase: Laputan Machine."
Gunther Hermann: "I - am - not - a - machi --"
