This here is Chip. He's friendly, Outgoing, and always wants to explore unknown lands and worlds. He was originally a fictional character made for a children's series by an elvish author, Syrian Lode. Syrian died just before the 8th of 12 books in Chips's series were completed. Chip somehow became material, and whatever happened to him in the stories, happened in real life. Here Chip looks at a picture of his Author. He would have loved to meet him, even if Syrian was as cold as ice.
--WIP--: An attempt to color in the above picture. It's not very good, unfortunately, mainly because the cape looks abit rubbery. Sorry if everything else is black. It's all transparent areas but my current host thinks not. I need to get me a webs...

Okay, so the piece I have to contribute is actually a work in progress:
This is of the enemies that Captain Plokey will encounter in the alien complex. The robot starts out in a "caterpillar" form and, after a certain trigger, will morph into the mech form. If you've seen the game's project page, you'll see an much earlier (and uglier) version of this sprite. You can tell I'm still working on this sprite as it completely lacks the upper legs. You may also notice that I've tried to give it a "battle-worn" feel by sprinkling in a few dents. When I finish the sprite, I'll make sure I repost it.
Here is an "old" storyboard sketch for one of Captain Plokey's cinematics (yes, there will be a few cinematics). It's one of a long series, but it's about the only one I felt comfortable showing without giving "too much" of the story away. I had to blot out one small part, though.
Dang, Jess! Great lighting on the sprites! And I really like the storyboard illustration too. It looks so classic, and it looks like it fits in with, and sets the tone for, the rest of the game. Excellent work!
I've been reworking that sprite a lot. It will be one of the primary enemies for Captain Plokey and will probably appear on most of the levels. Considering it has that much "screen time", I really want to make sure it looks good.
Right now, I'm in the process of animating the sprite's walking sequence - which has been a challenge. It's one thing to draw a sprite, but it's a whole different world when it comes to animating it. The level of effort and amount of time required just skyrockets. I've spent a couple of evenings just working on the torso/head rotation alone. Next will come the arms and legs (which will finally force me to finish the upper thigh). If all goes according to what I'm envisioning, it'll be smooth (10 frames) and have a nice "heavy" feeling - rather than the "gliding" feeling it has in my current walking sequence.
I'm glad you like the storyboard! A number of years ago, I drew all of the storyboards for the Captain Plokey in a sketchbook (complete with all of the effects I wanted to do in TGF/MMF). About the only storyboards I didn't have were for the ending. I shared about 10 or so of those scanned storyboards with Assault Andy when we started the project together. I may not have time to draw the pixel art for all of them but I'm certainly going to try to do the opening sequence and one other. I think it'll make the story that much more compeling to the player. Without the story, I think the player will not feel the plight of the character or get the mood I'd like to convey (which is probably darker than the main character sprite might lead you to believe).
"It's one thing to draw a sprite, but it's a whole different world when it comes to animating it. The level of effort and amount of time required just skyrockets. I've spent a couple of evenings just working on the torso/head rotation alone."
Yes, yes, YES. Ugh... I wish everything would just magically animate itself. That would be SO handy!
@Hayo: Very cool! I like the expression on the guy with the Hamburger tie's face.
Also, just finished this some time after school today.
I'm not sure how happy I am with it overall. It feels like the shading is off on some places and some areas have been completely forgotten about being shaded. D: I kind of like the wood, nose, and fur textures, though.
This is an old, unfinished concept drawing of Bonmo, Hero of Time and Space ("and Space" added to his title to differentiate from that other, more popular guy). His helmet was inspired by Agamemnon's in Time Bandits, and samurai masks.
I guess I should post my little man here too.
BTW, this sprite is currently being remade totally,
so I estimate about the double amount of frames for
the final version. (!)
Wow the standard is very high on the Daily Click. I've gone for a simplistic graphic style with my game characters. I'm not naturally talented like most of the Daily Click members but i work as hard as i can to get the right look.
Wasn't planning on posting this, but I tend to take long breaks when I think I have a good idea. This is all I have been thinking about for the past few hours (I started just a few hours ago.)

It's the artistic ones coming forward. Even then, I've seen higher standard. Then again, I go to an art school so something might be wrong if I didn't.
I wanted to contribute even though ive not really got any new characters. Although some are new versions of old characters and others are just things i drew once.
While she's not truly my character 100%, my FableQuest protagonist is still original, and I do think of her as a rather awesome character to work with. I've been practicing drawing full-screen pixel art of her.
This totally gives me ideas about having in-game cutscenes using large, static sprites like these.

photoshop pic for a future game based on a rushed competition game. Might continue work on the project, I didnt decide yet, Ill probably abandon it in a couple of days.
Adam that dog is amazing I would love to see a game with that graphic style. I think you should continue the project, I really liked the old competition game.
Your just jealous that you're not as awesome as me.

@-Adam- this might be a dumb question, but how did you get the 'construction paper' texture? Is it just a certain brush you were using? Either way, I cant wait to see what you can do with the game now.

It's a photo I took of brown parcel paper Thanks Werewoof, am an Uncle now
Here's a caricature of myself I did yestertoday. (Sorry for the serious/grumpy/tired look, something told me to give myself one... :|) And sorry this seems vain; it wasn't supposed to be a caricature at first. I just got sidetracked and I've never actually done one before.
Keep em coming! Remember you can post landscapes, random doodles, or whatever you made (despite the title being centered around characters).
@ Del Duio I've always liked hasslevania your game art is top notched in my book.
Thanks a lot, that was the first game I made that didn't use black outlines on everything and I think it made a big difference. Now if only I could do the animations better.. That's the hardest part in my opinion. If I were to just draw one static combat picture for each enemy or something (e.g. Dragon Warrior) it would be a lot easier than making a crappy zombie try to walk and look semi-convincing.

Okay, I'll guess I'll start off with Pixel art, then work my way to just plain art...
These are some of the characters I did for Royal Rocket Ruckus(Hope OMC doesn't mind me posting them here....)
OMC has redone the Nerd King and the Pirate King, and excellent job at it! But I'll let him post them and have his credit that's due/
The Nerd King
The Pirate King
Mr. Migogo(Korean King)
The Llaman Shaman
The Redneck King
The next picture, is the cast of Motherworld. This is all of the currently finished characters.
THAT'S 45 CHARACTERS SO FAR MIND YOU!!!
This is probably only 1/4 of all the final characters
Sadly, I can only take credit for a couple of this characters, most of them are proberty of Ape's game Earthbound. And most of the ones that aren't are parodies of famous characters
Okay, since people are also showing off their non-personal-character artwork, I'll show a peice of my artwork
A lot of this peice was cut off by my scanner. It's called a scratch board drawing, you take this weird cardboard paper coated in ink or something, and draw on it with this knife deal. It's sort of like doing reverse shading where you color in all of the areas being hit by light. I scratched a little to hard on his forehead and made the scanner leave a black mark. Oh well... The person in this pic. is John North Willys, the founder of Willys Overland Automotive. John Willys was an automotive pioneer. Back in the early 1900s, Willys was second to Ford in car sales. Willys is more commonly known for a little off road vehicle nick named "Jeep." Ring a bell to anyone? The first Jeep was a result of Willys trying to gain a contract from the US government during WW2. That's why there's an old flat fender WW2 GPW "Jeep" behind him in the pic. (Willys would fail to evolve in terms of engine size and etc after WW2 and soon became simply Jeep) This was my art project from last year.
right on. Scratch boards now your taking me back a bit. but scans of scratch board are never like seeing the real deal. The lighting on the jeep turned out nice. I tell you nothing teachs an artist more about light than a scratch board.
A scan of a scratch board really takes away its beauty I agree...
Seeing one in "person" is completely different than a computer picture.
I've got a coule more art projects I could upload, like a big pic of FDR, but my scanner isn't big enough to fit the scetch The scratch board is my only art project that will fit on it... I'm sure scratch board drawing would be very easy to do on photoshop, by simply switching the colors around on a black and white scetch. But that ruins the point, scratch boards are supposed to be big, laborous projects.
@Jess: Nice Shading and lighting, and the comic style storyboard illustration is neat
@W3REWOOF: I like how you capture emotion in your work, good stuff
@Blendroid: for some reason I can't see your picture, it doesn't show it
@EE: hmmmm ... does animating a silhoutte then filling in details later make things easier and faster?
@Va1entine: blocks and eyes? .. where's the rest of it? simple but good
@GamesterXIII: love that frog movement!, but use up instead of shift for jump higher on the mushroom
@AndyUK: make more, I wanna see more, those are all old
@Strife: Is that Inuyasha's gay brother (the one they don't like to talk about)?
@Cecil: Nice goat, you should animate it.
@marky_2: that a picture of one o' those bendable poseable action figures right? .. like Gumby?
@Del Duio: Love your artwork, the baseball one is great, good name for that SplatterPillars haha
@-Adam-: That puppy dog looks wonderful but good luck with the animations. It's tough enough animating regular pixelart. (or is that just for the title or something?)
@A.Lino: Nice Fish
@Pan-tosser: Wow. Is that going to be placed in a World War game somewhere? A museum maybe?
@Yami: reminds me of the thick line style in some cartoons (i don't like that style) You're Avatar animation is very fluid, I like it.
I'm not so keen on that Kids Arena pic though, it looks ugly somehow, but if the whole game is like that i guess it could work once animated.
@Del Duio again: yeah, i'm with ya there ... animating is a pain in the arse!
@Wiiman: that looks like EarthBound art. Good scratch board drawing, jeep looks nice
@Kayla W: neat, what's the project called?
@Oko: everyone is curious how your gate is going to work as an enemy ... including me
@OMC: Sheepvalanche? ... but you already made a Cowvalanche, so shouldn't it be a Sheepslide? or Sheepcano or something?
@everyone: anyone wanna see some of my junk?

Woah woah woah . . . is that game inspired by eversion? I was just looking at eversion videos minutes before you posted that. The enemy you have there looks exactly like some of the enemies from that game.
It's a puzzle combat game showing the player on the left, the enemy on the right, and the puzzle in the center. So I don't actually have to show the gate acting as an enemy, just it's speech.
Hypothetically the gate could err... swing back and forth! rendering the protagonist (one of three characters) unable to continue on his quest to build RoboBlock!
If I were a gate, I'd be pretty insulted by you people.
Blood of the Ancient One, Seen only as Shadow, Faster than Lightning, Fierce as the Greatest Dragon, Nearly Invisible, Floating in a Dream, Entered through the Demon Door, Destroyer of Evil in a Realm with a Red Sky Scarred, Who could I be ?
For the most part your characters in motion look stiff. A lot of that has to do with not using enough frames to make it look fluid. Also my suggestion for when having someone swing a sword for example, to give a sense of speed you should have the sword at point A, then a blur of the sword from point A and B in one frame, and then the last one being the sword at point B.
@Yami: thanks, that's good advice
@GamesterXIII: i'll let "MKK" know that he should get Pivot ... MBK already has it (but i only used it once, so good advice thanks)
@Wiiman: kewl kewl, well you did a good job cause it looks just like Earthbound gfx, congratz
Edit: did anyone notice what's wrong with the sword swinging animation besides what Yami said? There's something in there that i didn't notice until after i posted it, so i'm curious if anyone will notice.
Edit2: does anyone know how to post pics side by side?
Blood of the Ancient One, Seen only as Shadow, Faster than Lightning, Fierce as the Greatest Dragon, Nearly Invisible, Floating in a Dream, Entered through the Demon Door, Destroyer of Evil in a Realm with a Red Sky Scarred, Who could I be ?
You should use pivot more. I used it once, but came up with some pretty tight running animations when I did.
Just look at a walking animation tutorial and go from there - doesn't have to be pixel art. You can also reference other peoples animations and such to get the desired effect you need.
I suck hard at animations, but remember also that when you walk or run, your legs are not the only things that are moving. Characters can use exaggerated animations obviously, but arms, heads, hands, necks, etc. move as well and your upper body rotates some too.
@ MBK my advice would be to google animation anticipation. You may already know about it. But if you do know all about anticipation in animation. I'd just tell you the anticipation frame needs to be slowed down and pushed father. You know in slow out fast stuff.
Thank You Pan-Tosser ... never knew there was such a term as "animation anticipation" .. that should help me some.
Do you know of any other animation related terminology that I could google? Every bit helps.
Btw, I'm surprised that noone mentioned some of the specific flaws in a few of my animations.
Lets make a game out of it. I'll give 100 pts to the first person who points out the flaws that I didn't notice until after I posted
The blur needs to be the same color as the sword or whatever it is that you're blurring whether it's one color or more. Again, you need more frames. Show us the motion of the character moving from idle position into that swinging one. When you cut yourself short on frames it just looks really choppy and makes it look like the character is appearing in places rather than moving into them.
@Yami: sweet advice on the color of the blur being same as the weapon blurred. Btw, that's not either of the 2 things that I was thinking of, but one of the things does have to do with the blur. (hope you don't mind me writing down your advice for reference)
I couldn't possibly guess at the mistake. Their are just so many ways to do things. but My vote is for something more like my remix. Starting from a frame that is more on a 45, I think helps. At least it helps me.
Your second frame has both arms overlapping the head. in a true 45 they don't both overlap. Would I call it a mistake, probably not. My point is lots of liberties can be taken when a character is in extereme movement. It's the slower movements that have to be smoother and more exzact.
@Pan-Tosser: I'm diggin' the remixed barbarian drawing, can you animate it? It'd help alot.
Here's the walking animation so you can probably see how much trouble I've been having because I didn't know how to draw on the 45.
at 2010-06-29
@Hayo: sorry dude, you're right, kinda hi-jacked the post and made it about me, didn't intend to, but really need to learn to animate better ... maybe it'll get some more people posting their art though at least eh?
I guess game over? ..
Sword and Shield guy: look closely at the shield and left arm as it moves .. the arm changes position and loses the straps.
Green sword swinger guy: the lines don't start at point A and go to point B. They start in the middle which is probably wrong.
I didn't realise either until after i posted em up.
I'm giving Pan-Tosser 100 pts anyway cause he came the closest by finding some interesting flaws and made a nice remix drawing.
Emphasis on the drawing .. pictures are worth more than words.
Yami got the ball rolling though, and gave good advice too. 50 pts for Yami.
@A.Lino: thank you for trying, but I had that bookmarked for a long time ... unfortunately it has nothing about the angle I want
Pan-tosser's drawing is the angle that I need, but I have yet to find something on animating like that. Of course I'm not really sure what to look up either so it makes it tough, now that Pan mentioned it though, I'm gonna try searching animating on the 45 angle ... see if that brings anything up ... does anyone know if there is a term used for that style/angle of animating game characters?
A.Lino, know of any site like that?
<warning:: rant about how the internet sucks ::warning>
You know, there's alot of spam and garbage in the way of the valuable info on the internet. I really wish they'd make another ending for all the stuff like blogs, tweets, mmorpg sites, rants, anything commercial (including pron), etc. ... maybe .crp (for crap) ... then hire government workers to move all those sites to their new respective spots (their current name minus the .com and plus the .crp) ... then the internet would be much more useful for the purpose it was originally meant for (intelligence gathering / information collection) Edit: for learning purposes, not the commercial get your info crap they do all the time ... OOORRR at the very least make a new ending for freely shared useful info .... oh and we'll need a nice new search engine that searches only the .useful section of the web.
Back on topic--- Here's the only thing I made with pivot so far:
Blood of the Ancient One, Seen only as Shadow, Faster than Lightning, Fierce as the Greatest Dragon, Nearly Invisible, Floating in a Dream, Entered through the Demon Door, Destroyer of Evil in a Realm with a Red Sky Scarred, Who could I be ?
@ mbk your right about finding things about animation on the web. But I won't worry to much about angle. Look at the movements in assassins creed. they don't stay fixed to one angle. Learning to draw different angles just adds to your artist repertoire. Making your animations more dymatic and interesting.
The best animators can pack many different angles into a movement. It also depends on the charactor design. With assassins creed they would of been stupid if the were never in a side view. Because of the bird hood design the costum has. So they perferd it over the 45.
I think your really close to stepping up your game though. Just think some about more about your overlap
Edit: My apologies if that sounded a little rude, I just had to while the opportunity was there. Lol But yes, I will admit that you do have a point. I was just trying to make it badass looking. It's also good practice for texturing, as I could use some improvement in metallic surfaces. So kudos for pointing that out.
1) It seems like ya couldn't decide whether you wanted him to hold the sword with hand forward or backward, if backward the arm looks funny cause the way it bends, if forward the hand needs to be flipped round so the fingers are in front.
2) Can a werewolf even hold a sword?
3) Where's his claws at? I notice he has 'em on his feet but none on his hands.
1: The sword is meant to be held backwards, and now that you mention it the arm is pretty weird. I might have to fix that soon.
2: The average werewolf- probably not. This one- sure.
3: His right hand is grasped around the hilt, pointing backwards, so no claws would generally show. his left hand is pointed backwards as well, so I figured not to draw them.
Oh hey, might as well point one other thing out: Stephen's left shoelace is missing.
Oh hey, might as well point one other thing out: Stephen's left shoelace is missing.
Haha, yea, I just thought he lost it while running away from whatever monster that the werewolf is now protecting him from
Guess I missed that, oops
It looks real good though, I wouldn't be able to do any better right now that's for sure.
I like the face of the wolf .. the teeth have a nice look. Is that some sort of comic style? .. Manga maybe?
