Poll results: Romeo is the best Klik & Play demo game!
News posted 15th March, 2024 by Joshtek Post A Comment

Gracillis V had an early lead but the Klik & Play game that was voted the best by the most TDCers? Take that prize, Romeo!

The votes mostly went to these two games... but Hungry Hedgehogs and Reversi got a prize each. According to one commenter, they learnt a lot from studying Reversi's events.

To celebrate Romeo let's take a look at the original platform game and a number of games it has inspired in broadly chronological order...

Romeo (1994) by Barney Skirvin and Richard Gale

The original! According to the instructions: "The object of the game is to rescue Juliet from the pie devil (Simple, eh?). You must collect the keys to open the relevant doors, avoiding the onslaught of descending pies to get to Juliet. There are five levels, each one proving a greater challenge than the last. Good luck! PS. One last tip. Avoid water at all costs!"

You can check it out as part of Kliktopia's Clickteam Game Demo Collection.

Romeo and Juliet 2 (1996) by Richard Gale, Nolan Worthington and Julian Harding

This version was bundled with Click & Create and later Multimedia Fusion. It has large characters and a small window and only 3 levels, but gets quite a bit of content out of it thanks to the introduction of scrolling.

In the game, Juliet is sometimes called "the princess". This is perhaps a reference to the original game sprite for Juliet being called princess. Historical note: In the original Shakespeare version, Juliet is the daughter of Lord Capulet rather than a princess.

In terms of the credit split Richard Gale did the programming, Nolan Worthington & Julia Harding did the graphics, and Lee Bamber did additional programming.

You can check it out as part of Kliktopia's Clickteam Game Demo Collection.

Romeo 2: Live Free or Pie Hard (2010) by Mr. Podunkian (Arhur Lee)

Interpeted by some as a gentle and/or mean-spirited dig at the price of a popular game whose name begin and ends with V, this game features some adult (or is that childish?) humour, and was made for the Ladies' Auxiliary Klik of the Month Ball #5. Check this game out over at Glorious Trainwrecks.

Romeo vs. The Pie Devil: The Rhythm Game (2011) by Chris Nimmo

According to the Author: "A silly music game made in 30 minutes for Shab's TDC competition". This game featured in Klikcast Episode 23 (play the video above) and while the original download link is long gone a backup is hosted on Glorious Trainwrecks.

Romeo 3 (before 2018) by The MPP (Morgan Pander)

According to the author: "This is an old game I made a while back. It's not that great but should be able to give a few laughs to some of the people who played the old Romeo games. The Pie Devil has kidnapped Juliet once again! Now it's up to Romeo (you) to save her!". Check it out at The Daily Click.

Better Romeo (2021) by Mustafa-

A remake with various improvements... and full source code! According to the author: "Romeo was one of the OG pre-bundled games with KnP, it was a simple platformer game which the main goal is to rescue Juliet (yeah it really is), while you at it there are some obstacles and whatnot. Though OG Romeo had some really bad bugs, you can even say it is unplayable! That's why I decided to 'Remake' it from a blank MFA". Check it out at The Daily Click.

Infinite Romeo - Pie in the Sky (2022) by Danni

Co-winner of my Hi-score Mash-up Game Jam, according to the author: "Did you ever want to play the original Klik & Play example game 'Romeo' forever? No? Well, now you can! Enjoy endless generated levels of breezy platforming and more pies than you could ever eat!". Check it out at The Daily Click.

Romeo Burger Quest (2023) by Klikguy (Leo)

According to the author: "Pick up the burgers, and shoot the enemies (DON'T SHOOT THE BURGER, OR YOU WILL LOSE HALF THE POINTS!!!). If you take too long to pick up the hamburger, a vampire will appear and if it touches you, you will lose the game". Check it out on Glorious Trainwrecks.

New Game: The ORIGINAL Squary the Squarer Game
News posted 11th March, 2024 by Joshtek Post A Comment

Remember the platformer Squary the Squarer in Snow Square from last Christms? Well, CoolPatilloGuy is back with an earlierand less snowwy version of the game with the ORIGINAL Squary the Squarer Game.

Comments from the Author: "Hey guys, it's been a while. I am here just to upload a game that may be terrible for being incomplete, but mean a lot to me as it was something I made for fun, although started during mid 2022 development returned in early 2023 during vacation and it lasted until June of said year which is the month where this version (which is the last one) was made. This is quite silly as it has Sonic sound effects, but have a music from the japanese Crash Bandicoot version, royalty-free music and the Hotel Mario death sound theme. Interesting (for you people who never seen this game before) is that has support for two players (VS 2 PLAYER and CO-OP MODE) so if you have some cool friend then this might be your choice for a old-styled modern game. There are two zones with three leves each (so, six levels), also there is something "cool", just find out! Despite being abandoned after June, I used this for what in six months later would be "Snow Square". Oh yeah, this has lots of prototypes but nah stick to the last one which also was supposed to be a demo. Now, should I finish this game? Like, it was actually fun and actually with the people I know they enjoyed it. Plus, compared to my other projects (excluding SiSS) this is quite complete, but perhaps for now (and for my sanity) this will be a good memory. Enough talk and... enjoy? I don't know."

New Game: Unavoidable Flying Objects
News posted 1st March, 2024 by Joshtek 1 Comment

Dannimáx is on a roll with yet another cool game in their recognisable style: Unavoidable Flying Objects.

Comments from the Author: "Speed and precision are key! maneuver and shoot with your UFO through the UFOs. Use Speed pads to gain a speed boost, dodge obstacles or destroy them with your rockets and make it to the end in one piece! Once you beat the first course you'll unlock hard mode which is requires even more precision. This game is more simple than my last one, it was just an idea that I wanted to get out quickly."

I had a go, and I see what the author meant - this is a game that will challenge your ability to balance speed and precision. For example, You have to shoot the mines and trust they'll be destroyed by the time you get to them. It gets easier as you get a feel for the movement, learn the map, and figure out which boosts are worthwhile. A secret undocumented key: R to restart.

Poll: What's your favourite Klik & Play demo game?
News posted 16th February, 2024 by Joshtek 7 Comments

We had 50 responses to our poll on when people started Clicking. 3 respondents have not started Clicking yet. Amongst the others, 34% started with Clickteam Fusion 2.5, 30% started with Klik & Play, 26% with The Games Factory or Click & Create, one person started with Multimedia Fusion 1.x, and nobody started with The Games Factory 2. Thanks to everyone who took part! While the numbers different, the raknings are similar to an equivalent poll from 2018 where 39% of our Clickers started with Fusion 2.5 and 34% with Klik & Play.

Sticking with this Click era theme, I'll be starting the first of a new series of polls asking for your favourite Click demo games. This first batch is focussed on those that were bundled with Klik & Play. If you haven't checked them out then see Kliktopia's Clickteam Game Demo Collection where they have all been bundled together along with a version of my guide to running old Klik games on Windows 10/11.

Quit Buggin' by Jack or John
News posted 4th February, 2024 by Joshtek Post A Comment

Jack or John, creator of a variety of crazy and tower related games, is back with Quit Buggin'. It has some incredibly funky music, and a handy manual to give you tips on how to play.

Comments from the Author: "Quit Buggin' is an arcade shooter game where you smack pesky bugs away from your delicious burger. To kill the pesky bugs, you SMACK them with either your hand or fly swatter. You can also spray them with your bug stunner to have them in-place for a few seconds! Watch out for the Mother; she doesn't mess around..."

Friday the 13th: Return To Camp Blood [1999]

Comments from the Author: "Ahh, good memories. One of the first games I ever made when I was 15. The original f13 fan game that created a cult following. Play as Jason & kill the campers. Arrow keys & space bar to play. Crappy graphics I made in mspaint and ripped sounds. I had a s**t load of fun making it. Just the idea of making my own video game was amazing to me. This was originally made in Klik N Play and then converted over to Click & Create."

Right in time for Halloween that year. Control by using the arrow keys & space bar. Don't mind my sweet spelling mistakes."

Now there only remains a small group of magic users and one of them decides to go on a quest to defeat The Shadow Beast. The Shadow Beasts resides in a temple where it is training for it's next strike. The keys to the temple were each given to a guardian to protect, with them proceding to spread out around the land.
